I received three PMs about the little monster icon in my dock. Everyone assumed it was Mexican. It's actually a Japanese monster called a Domo-kun, the mascot for children's programming on NHK's BS1 and BS2 satellite TV networks. He was hatched from an egg and lives underground with a wise old rabbit. His name translates to something like "Mister Very" but that's kind of an awful translation, which gets worse when applied to kiddy-speak.

According to NHK's web site, he hates apples and farts when he's nervous.

I'll be in Japan in February and March and plan to load up on Domo-kun merchandise at the 100 Yen Stores.

Here's a couple of Domo-kun pictures:

Here Mine

Very cool. I hadn't heard of Digital Blasphemy before. I'll have to check them out.

For those who don't know, I make my own wallpaper. You can find it HERE. There's only a few things there right now, but I expect it to grow quickly.

I'm glad to see all the seti users out there :)

How long have you been "compiling data" & how many units have you completed?

i have had it since 1999 but haven't had it running consistantly and have (so far) processed 1757 data units.

O.K. So where are the kittens?   I feel like...

They show up occasionally as part of the Photoshop contests (the little purple banners that say "Photoshop"). The kitten's a pretty old cliche, but still turns up from time to time.

I just installed it two days ago. It took eight hours to do one unit. Is that normal? Seems like a long time, unless the units are much larger than I imagine them to be.

I don't know how much I'll use it, though. The program seems to make heavy use of my machine's Altivec engine, which makes it run hot and turn on the fan. I prefer to compute in silence.

The units can be different sizes. Every once and a while I get one that finishes in about 30 minutes but usually somewhere between 4 and 8 hours sounds right. For me it depends what else I'm doing on the machine. I only notice sound from my machine when its downloading a new unit.
