City Center - Las Vegas

Recommended Posts

From Wikepedia

CityCenter is a 76-acre mixed use development project proposed (currently under construction) by MGM Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada. The development will be on the site of the now imploded Boardwalk Hotel and Casino and adjoining land between the Bellagio and the Monte Carlo, and will be connected to these resorts via a state-of-the-art people mover system. With a total cost expected to exceed $7 billion, CityCenter is proposed as the largest privately financed development in the United States. Unlike other themed resorts along the Las Vegas Strip, plans include multiple high-rise buildings with contemporary urban design. CityCenter will feature approximately 2,700 units of luxury condominiums, a 4,000-room luxury hotel and casino; two 400-room, non-gaming boutique hotels; and a 500,000-square-foot retail and entertainment district. The project will initially employ an estimated 12,000 people.

Apparently, one of those towers is supposed to be 61 stories.

I stumbled across this website ... Its designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, Foster & Partners, and Rafael Vinoly...

I think its a nice break from all the colorful Casinos. Good for Vegas, a "normal" skyline! MGM Presents CityCenter.com. "Destined to be one of the great urban places of the world." ; Also has a Mandarin Oriental hotel.

I remember it had some bad press a few months ago regarding safety - apparently 6 workers had already died there by June. Link

I stayed across the street from the development a little over a year ago and it was already quite impressive. Must be something to see now

Las Vegas got a taste of Houston, but it was not budget cuts, rather poor construction.

Topping out at 28 stories instead of the proposed 49, the incredible shrinking Harmon seems unfortunately fated to look like a stubby, squashed stepchild next to its soaring CityCenter siblings, the 61-story Aria Resort & Casino and the 57-story Vdara condo-hotel.

Despite not being part of the design intention, the final height complements the "street valley" scale versus the canyon effect we normally see in downtown high rise densities. It may not be as iconic as the original rendering but, as in life, scars are what make you beautiful.

I saw an episode of Colossal Construction on the Science Channel showing this site. Talk about order! They only have such limited space, and everything is going up at once, what a management nightmare!

Any updates with photo. The main website is a bit outdated.
