Is Sony " Blu-Ray" repeating history here AKA Beta Max?

Sony Blu-Ray is kicking butt, by over 5 X the amount of players sold on the market thanx to the Playstation 3, the HD DVD players are doing okay, with a big help from the Xbox 360 add-on, but it is not enough to save it.

The irony, as stated in the artcile, HD DVD's are selling better, per Amazon.com, right now. But once Blu Ray titles start coming in with more variety, I am sure that will change.

Blu-Ray will win this time ^_^ , it will not be a BetaMax, MD, or UMD type blunder. :P

i hear the porn industry is leaning towards HD DVD, though these are just rumours. many claim they will decide which format becomes the standard, which is what happened between VHS and beta. beta was better quality, but VHS was cheaper and easier to mass produce.

at the Sony building in tokyo they have a movie playing on a plasma where half the screen is HD DVD and the other have is Blu Ray, and of course Blu Ray looks better but not by much. without the side by side i dont't think i could tell (i'll post a pic when i get home). it is, of course, better quality by definition, but i didn't see it. I'm happy with regular old DVD's for now, though i said that about VHS tapes once upon a time as well...

LG is/was working on a unit that played both which may be impetus for other companies to follow. I think by the end of this yr, their fates will be known for sure.

Actually, it is on sale, someone on Cnet.com said they had seen it and took a photo of it in a BIG BOX store shelf for sale in Dallas, I am sure it is in Houston too.

I say both are doomed, but of those two, HD-DVD will win in the short term. Why? Price, for the same quality. HD-DVD has been announced to break $299 next fall, while HD-DVD says fall of 2009 for $299 prices. If the PS3 were selling well, I'd say BluRay, but that simply hasn't materialized, and Sony is losing a lot of money(~$300 per unit, ouch) playing with the PS3, which is the only reason BluRay is ahead right now. How long are they willing to do that?

I'm beta testing something right now that will likely kill both. Think DVR on steroids + On-Demand on steroids + HTPC with big storage space+ FiOS internet + Amazon/Blockbuster/iTunes downloading service. Think 20 minute downloads for 1080p content. What I'm wondering most is which of those formats will be the burning disc of choice. That will be the only way they survive.

How long are they willing to lose money on the PS3? Until about the 4th or 5th year of production. Over time, however, game sales offset the per unit losses.

I ask this because they are experiencing record loss per unit. This isn't the usual $100 or even $200 per unit. Even if they are counting on software sales, there must be units in the hands of consumers and it surely isn't materializing yet. They are setting themselves up to rely on an unfinished technology and a hardware unit that doesn't do its main function as powerfully as its competition. They may yet win out though, but they need to do something quickly. The end of this year should be very interesting as the 3rd horse in the movie race shows up.

Looks like LG electronics is going to be the winner here with the multi platform unit. I see Sanyo and Microsoft are backing HD-DVD.

btw i have a 1987 Goldstar TV made by LG

i agree with rantanamo, HPTC's are definetly the way to go. With he proper video hardware and software, upscaling is an easy task and you can achieve the same resolution if not better. THis way you dont have to ditch all your old 480p dvd's.

One thing is for sure, im DONE buying dvd's, HD-dvd's, Blu-ray or any other retail movie on disc for that matter.

The price is ridiculous.

Blu-ray outpaces HD DVD in January

Sony plans to declare Blu-ray winner in high-def format war

By Jennifer Netherby 2/9/2007

FEB. 9 | Two movies on Blu-ray Disc were sold for every one sold on the HD DVD format during January, according to studio sources.

Blu-ray backers attributed the gains to the fact that more titles were released on Blu-ray than on HD DVD during the month and to quick consumer adoption of Sony

concur. i still can't believe they are selling recorders with the old analog tuners either. they will be obsolete in 2009. it even says it on the box!

I read the box and do a little research on expensive electronics before i decide to buy a specific product.

Looks like Blockbuster caused a milestone that may finally end the format war. Reading serveral sources of news material have reveal that people have been cancelling online orders of HD DVD players after Blockbuster released the announcement to only stock Blu Ray movies in their stores very soon. :P

I am still waiting for the Blu Ray enable PlayStation 3 to drop in price ($499), but I am confident that Blu Ray will succeed DVD. If not, downloadable movies will ultimately be the format of choice with the likes of Apple TV and Sling Box.

Are there any early adopter HD DVD player owners on here???

I'd suggest you return it back to the store if you are still within you return policy period and eat the restocking fee. Everyone else, hit eBay or CL, because you will be stuck with this generation BETAmax player!

i wouldn't raise the flag yet. I bought the hd-dvd player for less than $200 that is an add on to the xbox 360. I only own 3 movies but have rented some from netflix too. it also does a great job upconverting standard def dvds. So I have no reason to get rid of it even if they never make another Hd-dvd disc.

Haven't the HD-DVD players sold better than Blu-ray so far?

If you consider stand alone players, as in "non game systems" yes, HD DVD wins hands down.

But if you consider the millions of Playstation 3 systems out there, that is what changed the dynamics.

The change really started in December 2006, when enough people got PlayStation 3's in their hands and started buying Blu Ray movies.

I just like how Blu Ray sounds, but I have heard there is really no difference in technology. Since I am on a Mac and we willing slobs do whatever Kill Bill tells us, I will just go with whatever one they put in my next overpriced laptop from Apple.

Steve Jobs runs Apple, Bill Gates runs Microsoft, I think you were reference Bill as the head of Apple.

Well, I agree with others, don't count out HD yet. The Porn Industry has picked the HD standard. If you don't think that's significant...they picked the VHS format as opposed to beta. :)

You need a third option: "Who cares? Streaming media and HTPCs are the future, not DRM-laden discs"

;)

I agree the other thread talked about that.

Really, I searched for Blu Ray or HD DVD before I started this and I came up blank.
