From CNN.com:

Gunman opened fire at NASA building, police say

NASA evacuated a building at the Johnson Space Center in Houston after a person with a gun was seen and a shot was fired, a NASA spokeswoman said Friday. Brandi Dean said it was not yet known if anyone was hurt. Local police were on the scene, she said. NASA spokesperson, James Hartfield, told CNN there were gunshots heard in the building. He added NASA security rules do not allow weapons on the property.

i'm in mission control now and they won't let us leave. i know that a friend works in the security area and she said they were investigating two incidents. one was someone barricaded and someone with a gun. i guess they are the same.

Oh, an insider, be safe.

I have a friend that works their too, I hope everyone is safe.

Maybe you should keep communicating via Haif if you cant reach family????

Maybe we can do something if you need us!

Any of y'all at JSC, stay safe. Let us know if we can do anything.

This is what the Chronicle has up:

Authorities have evacuated Building 44 at the Johnson Space Center because of reports of a man with a weapon, according to a JSC spokeswoman.

KPRC was reporting that Jacobs Engineering, a contract employee, is confirming that the alleged gunman works for them.

There were reports that several shots were fired, but NASA spokesman Bill Jeffs would not confirm that.

Authorities received reports that a gun shot was fired at Johnson Space Center building 44 in Clear Lake at 1:59 p.m. today.

Houston Police including a SWAT team were at the scene, as well as NASA security.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone was missing or injured.

NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries said the incident appears confined to Building 44.

``Other than that, it doesn't seem to have affected our activities out here,'' Humphries said.

NASA security got a phone call at 1:40 p.m. about a person with a weapon at Building 44, an office building where engineers work on communications systems.

People were told to leave Building 44, and workers in other buildings were told to remain there.

Building 44, which sits in the middle of the 1,600-acre Johnson Space Center campus, includes offices and two labs. It is an engineering facility for communications and tracking involved in space shuttle work.

From television helicopter camera shots on Channel 11, many Houston Police cars were seen around the building.

Clear Creek ISD's Space Center Intermediate School, with about 900 students, is currently on lockdown status. No injuries have been reported.

NASA spokesman James Hartsfield said the building was ``one of the smaller'' office buildings on the JSC campus, where Mission Control is based. He declined to speculate on how a person would get a gun inside NASA security or what his motives would be.

The identity of the armed man is not yet known. Evacuated employees were outside the building, and moved to the east side of nearby Building 25, which is a safety barrier. Some of the employees were sitting under trees and talking.

Anyone who comes on to JSC property has to have an employee badge or a visitor badge. Visitors must show a drivers license or some other form of identification to be cleared to be on the property.

there was just an announcement in mission control that everyone can now leave.

News just said that the man has a hostage and had targeted one person. He knew what he was doing and where he was going. They are in a conference room.

Well, at least you are not in harms way. What is your job over there?

engineer. evidently the guy's name is bill phillips and he went into a conference room and asked everyone to leave except for one person. supposedly 3 are unaccounted for...but they may have left early or something.

Why did he do it?

The guy who got killed is supposedly David Beverly. David was a NASA lead to the shooter Bill Phillips. Bill was supposed to be building some additions to a computer docking station with certain specifications. David evidently had to repeatedly tell him he was not building to specification and evidently over time the stress built. He lady was a person who did configuration management for the group. David is the only person that people can't contact so that's why they think he was the hostage who was killed.

It's the ones that we know are on meds but they are fine that really worry me.

It'll come out on this guy was on prozac like it will with Cho and did with the Columbine killers.

People who were there can submit their story to BBC. Reading their story you'd think Texas is still it's own country.

Yeah, the BBC's really slipped in the last five years or so. Sometimes they just make things up, especially on their mass market channels.

Just this morning on BBC Radio 1 the newsreader said that the Blacksburg Police were mad at NBC for getting the Cho package. I watched the news conference, and the chief of police in fact said the exact opposite. He praised NBC for how quickly the network did the right thing and turned it all over to the FBI.

I'm not convinced that the BBC does it as part of an agenda. I think they just assume a lot of facts not in evidence and fill in the blanks with their own personal experience. If you get the opportunity, pick up a couple of British newspapers and read the stories about America. They'll have quotes from people in Oklahoma and South Dakota and similar places saying things like, "The tornado came out of nowhere right when I was getting the kettle for tea and biscuits." I'd wager that the percentage of Americans who talk like that is .0000000000001%. But somehow the British newspaper keep finding them. That is, if you believe Americans talk with Brits.

Sorry... back on topic:

I'm not sure there's any way this could have been prevented. He had an employee badge. And NASA can't frisking its employees every morning when they come to work. I'm afriad we're going to just have to mark this down under "unfortunate events."

I was actually walking on the sidewalk into building 44 when I noticed snipers all around moving in, and within minutes, those of us around the trees and sidewalk were rushed into the firehouse which is next door. Spent the next 2 to 3 hours there until they let us go. I called two engineers that are good friends of mine, to make sure they were either out of the building and if not, to tell them to get under desks. One of the engineers anaswered my call, and as it turned out, she answered my call while laying low in a ditch across the building, where the snipers told them to go. (She told me this later that evening as we were calming our nerves at a local pub). The other thing...While waiting in the firehouse with all the other building 44 people, I started hearing the rummors: "It was Bill, Bill did this". I worked with Bill for about 7 years in buidling 44 - we were on a team of 3 designers on a project. After that project, he went on to another department in the same building. I knew him very well. Several of us knew he was unhappy. But, many people are not happy all the times, how do you tell the difference? He had expressed to me that he wanted to leave Jacobs and go back to "our old company." (I wont mention names since I now work with that company). As a side note, not many people had been happy when Jacobs took over the contract back in 2005. Things have been on the low marale side since then, and I'm sure this didnt helpl the situation in this case. Flipping incredible. So, after we were let go, me and my engineer friend who go out and was hiding in the ditch, hitched a ride, and we had some drinks at a local pub. Beer was badly needed at this point.

My car is still parked, ironically, one slot over from Bill's. They wouldnt let us into the parking lot to get our cars. So I will go there today and hopefully get my car out.

I'm sure this will prompt the administration to consider manned metal detectors a la the setup most courthouses have now.

As for that map, I couldn't help but smile and think: "I wonder if they would do that for any other state!" :)

My sister said that the victim was a friend of her best friend's dad and he was at his house just last week.

It is amazing what paths people's lifes unexpectedly take, again, each day could be your last.

I played on a volleyball team last year with my co-worker and his son.

Over the summer, his son, who was 15, went to a teenager/college "party" at a friends house for the first time, (without adults, or his mom or dad etc.)

Some bastard brought a gun and shot people because he was jealous his girlfriend was being hit on, both he and his friend died.

I never knew the boy that well, but it is just strange, when you are sharing an activity together, like volleyball, and then they are gone.

It's scary. I was out having pizza today and I thought someone could go in right then and shoot the place up. I imagined someone walking in, lining everyone against the wall and killing them execution style. What's to stop them? People are insane. A lot of sickos got some ideas this week with the VT and NASA murders.

The BBC's story was short and consice. It made no reference to Texas' status as a state or nation-infact it made no reference to Texas at all other than locating it on a map. Do you think people are too stupid to understand Texas is a state in the US? What is your source that "It'll come out on this guy was on prozac like it will with Cho and did with the Columbine killers?"

I won't be surprised when you don't respond. You never do when caught in another of your baseless rants.

You're kidding right? Have you watched a single episode of Jay-Walking on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno? most people they show on the air don't even know where most non-marquee states are like North Dakota or Nebraska. Just watch this video for proof how stupid people are: Who To Invade Next Video. Just watch as these idiots try to find the very countries they think we should bomb next.

You ever hear of the old saying: "A picture is worth a thousand words.."? Well look at the picture, the United States is a different color, and seperated by a border the same as Mexico is. Each are labeled as their own territory: Mexico, Texas, United States. That's an invite for every stupid person in the world to think we're our own sovereign nation.

I won't be surprised when you don't respond. You never do when caught in another of your baseless rants.
That's a chicken ____ call out - is what that is. I thought you were a 50+ year old adult? God forbid you act like one once in a while. Why couldn't you have just asked maturely if he had any sources for his opinion? Edited by Jeebus

That map says it all. And yes, people are that stupid. It shows the USA, Texas and Mexico as their own territory.

You should get some new meds becuase yours don't appear to be controlling your anger. Talk about a new candidate for the looney bin.

It'll come out this NASA shooter was off his meds. But don't underestimate the power of the drug lobby. They have a knack for keeping the prozac shooters off the front page.

I hope you were joking... because that video is a joke. Not only is it titled CNNN, but the ticker tape scrolling across the bottom tells nothing but jokes.

I'm pretty sure the people in that video were dead serious. I think it was from Carlos Mencia or the Daily Show. The point was similar to that of the Jay Walking segments on the Tonight Show: to show how stupid people are.

Don't get me wrong, I'll never underestimate the number of incredibly stupid people that are out there, beyond my realm of social interaction. ...but I'll also never underestimate the willingness of journalists (a.k.a. entertainers) and editors to put assemble scripted realities that never were.

You would be absolutely amazed how stupid people can be. Dealing with as many people I do on a daily basis makes me realize how ignorant some people can truly be.

What bothers me the most is that I also deal with highly educated people that have a great amount of responsibility.
