New Gambling In Texas Debate

Before, we've talked about the possibility of gambling becoming legal throughout parts of Texas (particularly Galveston). It looks like State Legislation may be ready to take it to the next step. The article doesn't mention the 12 places in particular that could be home to new resort-casinos, but I guess you'll hear that soon should this vote pass.

Any positive/negative opinions on the new developments?

We heard this before when the Legislature was discussing the need for horse racing. That issue was passed and now we have race tracks at various places around the state that have a hard time drawing a crowd.

Just a few weeks ago the gov decided that we should sell the Texas Lottery. And not too long ago the state fought tooth and nail with the Indians over a casino. Those idiots in Austin can't seem to make up their mind on anything worthwhile.

I'm all for legalizing casino gaming in Texas. I enjoy going to casinos, and would love to be able to drive to Galveston whenever I felt like playing a little blackjack.

The Lake Charles, Louisiana gaming areas customer base is 95% Texan. I think we should keep our $ in our own state.

amen to that . Casinos have change since the old days. Now the new ones are nice with 3 story ceiling and with huge windows to view the outside world. we need to keep our money here. So i say YES to casinos especially in horse tracks and galveston.

Don't trash up Galveston. Keep it family based.

Huh? Since when? And, why do families think they control everything? AND, other than the gambling area itself, why can't a casino be "family based"?

And, finally, just what the hell IS "family based"?

My family. We have place in Jamaica Beach so I have a say what comes onto the Island, even if we are just weekenders. We still pay taxes.

It's trashy enough as it is. I really don't care to fight Friday traffic with all those scuzball gamblers driving with their windows up smoking Pall Malls.

Las Vegas is for gambling. Gambling anywhere else is not the real deal.

Anyway, it'll just be a magnet for local poor people.

Nobody is going to fly from out of state to come to gamble at a rinky-dink Casino. They will continute to go to Vegas if they have to get on a plane.

A nice little poor tax for Texans is all it will be.

Actually, if they don't have silly requirements such as putting the casinos on barges, it would bring massive investment to the island. It would also make Galveston a year-round destination, and encourage cruise travellers to extend their stay on the island. It would also provide jobs to many of those poor people that you don't like, since apparently, mowing your yard is not putting enough food on the table.

Casinos are big business. They aren't run by the mob anymore. There are ills associated with them, but there are many benefits to them as well, especially to a tourist town like Galveston.

Then put them near the cruise ships along Harborside Blvd if you must. Plenty of run down land over there. The thought of them on the Seawall is just terrible.

It's not like I am from NYC and bought a house Colorado. I'm a native Houstonian.

Why would casinos along the seawall be so bad? Have you ever been to Biloxi, Miss? Next to the historical homes on the beach were beautiful casinos, including Beau Rivage, which rivaled anything in Vegas. Of course, thanks to Katrina, many of the homes of have been destroyed, but a few of the casinos have reopened. I'm sure that the casinos in Biloxi will be one of the main reasons that area of the Gulf will be rebuilt.

However, casinos along Harborside would be a welcome addition as well. The cruise tourists would go right past them on the way to the terminal. It would be nice to have hotels/casinos along Harborside. Train station is right there. People could leave downtown Houston after work, jump on the proposed commuter rail between Galveston/Houston, spend the evening in Galveston at the casino, play a little blackjack, have dinner, hop back on the train and go home. I would love that!

This is exactly what it will bring. Nothing but increased revenue for OUR state, and beautifucation to Galveston island. Maybe we can finally get those beaches cleaned up by all the new tax revenue genrated.

Now, there will definately be an increase in prositution, drinking and driving and other crimes. These things just go hand in hand, but I guarantee that Galveston will also increase their police force accordingly to combat these crimes. All casinos are "corporate owned" entities now. The old Mobster days are far gone. Those that say that gambling also affects families because of those that have "gambling problems". Well, those people that have gambling problems are no different than those that have drinking problems or drug problems. These same people that have "gambling problems" WILL drive 2 hours to Louisiana, so there is no argument there.

Seawall Casinos would be a traffic nightmare. It's slow enough on the Seawall as it is.

Do any of you ever even go to Galveston?

Why don't we put it on Heights Blvd?

Dude, as a native, I thought you knew better. Maybe they could fly you in some white sand from Destin.

Oy vey.

I probably spend about 15-20 weekends a year in Galveston. Best friend has a home in Galveston. I love the island.

Have you ever been North of Broadway, around 35th street? Great little Mexican restaurant back in there, however, not much else. Plenty of undeveloped land for new housing/ apartments for those who would be employed with the jobs created by the casinos.

This area would be my preference. And link it to Harborside if Texas does allow them.

I think they would trash up downtown Houston.

HPD would love it, though. Easy pickins.

So you know about the traffic. My parents like that little Mexican place. We don't eat out much when we are down there.

Just fresh seafood at home.

Bro, C'mon, I know WHY the beaches have sooooo much crap on them, Gulfport used to comb the beaches EVERY morning, they are able to do this from the tax revenue the casinos generated. I don't think they do it as much now, maybe 3 times a week, but when all the casinos were in full swing. I am just talking about cleaning the beaches period of all the kelp over night and beer cans laying around, and driftwood.

Galveston grooms the beaches. Just not the entire island. And there is an ecological benefit against erosion from the seaweed.

That's why I ask if some of you even go down there.

That's another question. Would more people go to Galveston if there were casinos there, or would the tourist numbers be pretty much the same?
