In an expansion that will triple the size of the hospital, Methodist Willowbrook will begin a $250 million construction project in August that will make it the largest medical facility in the Cy-Fair/Tomball market. Complete with comprehensive cardiac services, a stroke center and a cancer center that will link with programs at the hospital's main campus in the Texas Medical Center, the expansion will make Methodist Willowbrook a regional medical center. Between 600 and 700 positions will be created with the construction, according to Chief Financial Officer James Levermann. "It will be like a new medical center," Levermann said. Since opening, the hospital has been at capacity and is usually on emergency room diversion status with area ambulance services due to high demand. Read the rest here

Heard it through the restaurant grapevine. Brick House is going in where Joes Crab Shack was. Reno has already started there. And I hear that Twin Peaks will be going in where Tokyo One is located currently. That intersection seems kinda plagued when it comes to restaurants. But maybe now with Bikinis, Brick House, and Twin Peaks there, maybe it will turn around and last for a bit.

I noticed off of Highway 249 North between 1960 and Gessner that the Willowbrook Commons has been demolished. Has anyone heard or seen what will be going in place of the Willowbrook Commons????

Construction started a few months ago for the new St. Luke's Hospital at The Vintage. "St. Luke's newest facility is coming the northwest Houston. Located just south of Vintage Park the facility is projected to be open by 2011. It will be approximately 3-5 stories tall and house between 80 and 100 beds. There will be approximately 50 to 70 active medical staff memebers and a medical office building of about 60,000 square feet."

I drove up to visit my parents in Champion Forest this weekend, and I guess all my visits to this website had me in the frame of mind to think about what the Willowbrook area was like before the mall was built. I don't know exactly when Willowbrook Mall was built, but I seem to remember going out to that area as a little kid in the early 1980s before the mall was built. As I remember it, most of that part of FM 1960 was just dense, undeveloped pine forest. I remember going to Champions Village 1, as there was a children's shoe store there where my mom liked to buy us shoes. I also remember there being a small two or three screen movie theater there, where I saw a Disney movie or two. I also remember further east, at Champion Forest Drive and 1960 (Champions Village 3), there was the shopping center with the Randalls in it, but not too much else, and it felt like it was in the forest there. That Randall's used to have a great little cafe upstairs on a balcony overlooking the store. Later that Randall's became one of the first Flagship stores on the north side of town. The shopping center the Randall's was in used to have a Wilson's or a Best, something like that. These were two store chains that were very similar, and one of them later became Service Merchandise. They sold electronics, other housewares, records and tapes, watches and jewelry, and even some toys. Of course in the mid 1980s for a while there was a little Sakowitz store where the Sun and Ski Sports is now.

I've noticed that the Willowbrook Court shopping center will be getting new retail stores and restaurants. There are several signs along 249. This is the center that is located next to ChuckeCheese. Does anyone know anything about this?

It's about time. The Lord & Taylor building has sat empty for over two years. They are finally gonna demolish it and redevelop the site. Here's the full story.

There a few new development projects on 1960 in the news recently. There's a Home Depot going up. I believe there is a Target going up as well. There's a new medical hospital almost completed. And they're opening a P.F. Chang's restaurant near Willowbrook. Does this mean 1960 is headed upwards? Isn't 1960 supposed to be nothing but pawn shops and tattoo parlors these days? What say the experts?
