  1. Houston OK's contract to design new library for Westbury, Meyerland area https://communityimpact.com/houston/bellaire-meyerland-west-university/development/2019/11/20/harvey-damaged-library-to-get-$14-million-replacement/ Over two years after Hurricane Harvey flooded the building, the Meyer Neighborhood Library remains closed, but a new library in a new location is poised to replace it. Houston City Council approved at $1.4 million contract to begin designing a new Westbury Neighborhood Library, a part of the Houston Public Library system, to replace the Meyer Neighborood Public Library. It will also house the Frank HPL Express Library, which currently occupies a leased space. District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum said residents in her district are looking forward to having a new library, which would be located at 5505 Belrose Drive, Houston. “Many of us know that we have been waiting for the library in the Westbury area to move forward," she said. "We have been without a true library in the area since Harvey ...We are making progress, and I’m happy to see great architecture here. The firm we selected was the 2018 American Institute Architects Houston firm of the year.”
  2. Ha ha! I remember Texas Tumbleweed on Fondren at S. Braeswood because I worked there. In fact, it was my first job. I helped it get prepped to open, then stayed another month or two. That must have been about Summer 1979. The restaurant wasn't quite at the southern end though. I was fairly centered in the middle of the side facing Fondren. Edit: August 2, 1979 Texas Tumbleweed which was located at 9950 Fondren at South Braeswood.
  3. I live in the dreaded Fondren Southwest area.. and have been checking out these streets I pass all the time around there.. a couple of weeks ago.. west on South Willow off S Post Oak.. turned onto this street called Clematis.. it dead ended onto Gasmer and this rather large pond/lake(?) or extremely huge mud puddle goes along Gasmer at Clematis. Wondering if anyone knows what the heck this is? My husband took these.
  4. Examiner discusses Westbury Rebels mascot
  5. Trying to find more information about the historic Walter Fondren ranch that was located, in present day, Fondren Southwest, now known as Brays Oaks and Westbury. How come this was never mentioned on any of the old Houston maps? I'll assume the area was located off of South Main Street and Fondren Road? 1944 aerial of South Main & Fondren. I outlined what I think was the ranch. 1978 aerial of the same area but with homes, and race track!
  6. While browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated July 29, 1964 I came across a cool, old business advertisement. Does anyone remember this restaurant in Willowbend/Westbury? Lenoard's Famous Pizza Family Style Restaurant Come As You Are If you have tried he rest now try the best! *Pizza *Spaghetti *Ravoli *Chicken *Sea Food *Sandwiches *Oyster Bar Dining room – orders to take out closed on Monday. Lenoard's Famous Pizza 11107 S. Post Oak / PA 3-4880

  8. Does anyone remember this boat storage business a long South Post Oak in Willowbend? I believe there is a Harris County Flood Control development there now? Newspaper advertisement dated June 5, 1963. Marina Catalina Safe Boat Storage *Individual stalls *Wash down slab *Electricity *Water Willowbend Post Oak Rd. Area 11000 So. Post Oak Rd. 9. Caught these historic matches on Ebay recently. The company on the matches is Texas Iron Works located at 12300 South Main Street. A little confusing. The area, today, is still light-industrial. There currently is a warehouse on site of the old TIW. However, the old warehouse could have been demolished and a new one could have been (easily) built in replacement. One thing, and I believe this is common on postcards, is all the grass surrounding the site. In present day, it's all development! Well, other than the Willow Waterhole Greenway near by. This would be next door to the Waukesha Pearce Industries parcel. WPI has been at that located for nearly a century I believe? Old school! Cool history here! I wonder what happened with the company?
  10. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated July 30, 1958 and noticed in an article mention of Westbury Water District located at 11655 Chimney Rock Road. Looking on old images, I can definitely see a bunch of round water treatment tanks. The circular tanks were first around in 1957 and disappeared in 1973. I guess in 1973 the Chimney Rock Park and Community Center was built. Looking at present-day satellite images, in the back of the Chimney Rock Park, I can see 1 round tank and 2 cylindrical towers. I wonder if the Westbury Water Works was just downsized, remodeled, and relocated. Willow Meadows Chapel Offers Lecture Series A week long lecture series, "Operation Understanding," will be held next week under the sponsorship of Willow Meadows Baptist. The series, open to the public, will feature Dr. J.W. MacGorman of Fort Worth and will be held nightly at 7:30 p.m. at the Westbury Water District auditorium, 11655 Chimney Rock. -- 1957: 1973:
  11. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 15, 1988 and came across this business advertisement. Very cool! This was located on the corner of West Bellfort and Chimney Rock, with an address of 5312 West Bellfort Blvd. Anyone have any memories of this place? How did it compare to, let's say, Spec's Liquors? How was the craft beer scene back in the late 1980s? I can imagine it was probably mainly Busch, Budweiser, or Coors. Although, Saint Arnold's Brewery was around! Pretty cool find!! Toby's Liquor 5312 W. Bellfort at Chimney Rock * 723-0761 16 Gal. Bush 60 l.b. ice 100 cups $39.99 16 Gal Lite * Coors or Budwiser 60 l.b. ice 100 Cups $49.99 - Ask About Our Delivery -
  12. Very cool find today! I've read that trampolines were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. From the newspaper The Bellaire Texas dated July 27, 1960: Moonlight and Cedarhurst in Westbury. Windy Jurgens & John Brynes were the instructors. In this newspaper article it mentions the address, 11902 Moonlight.
  13. The Westbury Square thread reminded me about this article which I had not exposed to the web. It provides history of the airport from its origins in 1941 to the article date in 1947. As noted in the Westbury Square thread, the airport property is bounded by present-day South Main, Chimney Rock, Hillcroft and West Bellfort. http://houstonfreeways.com/images/sam_hous...ew_complete.jpg
  14. wow!! I found the first located of the WCC! Cool history here. I wonder if anyone on HAIF knows about this place? Who was the architect? From the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated December 5, 1956: Here's How New Country Club Will Look. Groundbreaking For Willowisp Country Club. The first step in realization of the dream of two men from the Southwest area will take place Friday, December 7, at 2 p.m. On vacant acreage on South Willow Drive, in Willowbend. “We break ground for the Willowisp Country Club Friday”, Sam Dobyanski and his partner G.G. Simoneaux announced. The duo's plans for a $175,000 family type country club to serve the area of Willowbend, Westbury, Meyerland, Southern Oaks, Braes Oaks and Ayreshre, come of the drawing board and into construction immediately. The country club will include a seine dining room with a view of the terrace and swimming pool that will serve a night club on the weekends. The partners said there will be a cocktail bar, a magnificent swimming pool and a teen age recreation center with soda fountain, a snack bar and a jute box dances for afternoon and evening. Wading Pool. There will also be a kiddie wadding pool and play-ground area. Mr. Dobyanski, a resident of Willowbemd is a member of the the Bellaire Lions, and owns his own business, the Atlas Brace Co., 513 Richmond Avenue, where he has been located since 1950.
  15. I grew up in the Hiram Clarke area in the 1960's and 70's. Went to Montgomery Elementary, Dowling Junior High, and Madison High. We used to go to the South Main Drive In, (then later McClendon Triple). Don't know if this is the same but I do recall going to the go carts on South Main. It was located on the southern side of the street past Willowbend and before the South Loop, it was on one side of the fire station. Had a lot of fun there!
  16. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 19, 1956 and came across an article about a proposed/forthcoming Southwestern Bell Telephone Company building located on South Rice Avenue near South Willow Drive. Not exactly sure where this is located. South Rice is in Bellaire/Uptown but South Willow is in Westbury. Article mentions down S. Post Oak so maybe it is near Gasmer/South Willow? I'm not sure where "Parkview" is located. Must have been a residential subdivision in Westbury? New Telephone Building Going Up In Area Southwestern Bell Telephone Company has awarded the general contract for the construction of the new Parkview Dial Telephone Building to the W.S. Bellows Construction Company of Houston. Henry H. Mudd, division manager for the telephone company, side the total cost of the Parkview project will be in excess of $2 million. The new dial system will serve about 4,300 customers initially in the fast-growing area South of Bellaire in the South Post Oak Road area. The one-story and basement building will be constructed on property located on South Rice Avenue just south of South Willow Drive in the old Willow Creek Estate addition, the division manager said. “We are happy to announce the work will begins on the Parkview building which will be the biggest single telephone project here in the past few years,” Mudd said. “On completion the new dial system will make possible thousands of new customers in this rapidly expanding section of Houston.” “Construction of the building is expected to be completed by the middle of 1957, and the new dial system will be but into service in the spring of 1958,” Mudd said. “We’ll have groundbreaking ceremonies to mark the start of construction of the modern Parkview dial building,” the division manager said. Architect for the new building is Wyatt C. Hedrick of Houston. Contracts for heating, plumbing, electrical, ventilating and air condition work will be awarded in a few days, Mudd said. The new Parkview project is part of the Southwestern Bell’s $45 million expansion program in Houston for 1956-1957.
  17. Does anyone recall this residential? community located on South Main Street near Hillcroft Avenue? The subdivision was built in the 1950s. When typing in South Main Gardens into Google in present day, you get a residential neighborhood in Missouri City, TX. The present day neighborhood is located off Sam Houston Tollway. I believe that is a whole different development. Does anyone recall what school Helen Eisentower was speaking of? Maybe Westbury High School? Westbury is a few miles away from Hillcroft & South Main. HISD Board meeting minutes - January 23, 1956 Letter from Helen Eisentower in South Main Gardens referred to Superintendent for Investigation. Dear Sirs: Do you fold have any jurisdiction over this school in South Main Gardens off 13000 block of South Main Street left? The children and mothers are up in arms about all the conditions out here. I'm very much concerned and would like you to come out and interview some of these people, find out what can be done to improve this unrest. Respectfully, Helen Eisentower Route 3, Box 55B
  18. I just learned about this massive apartment complex at Hillcroft Street at South Main Street. Across from Meyer's Speedway! The apartment complex has since changed hands, multiple times, and is now called Heights at Post Oak. Hillcroft Square was originally developed by Wallace E. Johnson Enterprises, Inc. and was built in between 1969 to 1973. Here's an advertisement from the 1970s for Hillcroft Square.
  19. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated November 20, 1974 and came across a full-page business advertisement for Car Parts, Inc. located at 10224 South Post Oak Road. Where exactly was this? Was there a small retail center at the corner of South Post Oak and West Bellfort? Or maybe where the "fast food park" currently is? Where Jack In The Box, Taco Bell, and Long John Silvers are located? Does anyone recall this place? Awesome to see a smaller car parts company! Now days, it's all 2 or 3 national retailers. O'Reilly Auto Parts, AutoZone, or Pep Boys. Was Car Parts, Inc. founded in Houston? Or better yet, in the area of Meyerland/Westbury/Willowbend? What's the history of this place?
  20. A little lesser known bayou in Houston called Willow Waterhole Bayou. Information here: https://www.willowwaterhole.org/flood-control-wwbayou-increased-flooding Willow Waterhole Bayou is a narrow 4-mile-long natural tributary of Brays Bayou. It flows through Houston’s Brays Oaks area—once oil tycoon Walter Fondren's ranch—and Westbury neighborhoods. In the 1940s, when the ranch land was being developed, portions of the original stream bed were rerouted. Today the bayou emerges southeast of the intersection of W. Bellfort Blvd. and Fondren Rd. and eventually flows northeast from Braewick Dr. through the Westbury and Willow Meadows neighborhoods. The bayou, Scout Lake, its weir (similar to a spillway), and the culvert connecting the lake to the basin complex can all be seen at the end of the 500-foot-long Bayou Trail, which begins at the left of The Gathering Place on S. Willow Dr.
  21. 0.93 Acres and a 2,680 SF building up for grabs. My take, that fits the immediate area? More fast food. Loopnet listing: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/10232-S-Post-Oak-Rd-Houston-TX/28215669/
  22. Anyone know the architect for this smaller, neighborhood church? I've driven past the church countless of times but never thought about seeing whole designed and built the church. Probably built in the 1970s or 1980s? Located in Westbury at 5020 West Bellfort St. Website: http://www.stjohnspresby.org/
  23. I'm researching the developer and architect for this old garden-style apartment complex. This is located on the west end of Willowbend Blvd. Appreciate any information and knowledge anyone has. Does anyone have any memories of this place? Probably has been around for 40 years? Website: https://www.regalpointetx.com/
  24. Great post! I haven't thought of those restaurants in a long time. There was at least one in the SW Houston area, possibly on S. Post Oak. I only have a very vague memory of what it looked like on the outside (i.e. location-wise). I do remember the great steaks and potataoes.
  25. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated November 1, 1961 and came across this business advertisement for Fountain of Youth Car Bath & Auto Clinic located at 11221 South Post Oak Road near South Main Street. Does anyone ever take their car here for service or a car wash? Looking on Google Maps, there is a car repair shop at the current location. I'm sure the building has changed ownership half a dozen times since 1961. Or, I wonder, if this is the same family ownership after all these decades? Maybe the son of the owner runs it now?
