It recently came to my attention that one owner controls the entire 1,750-acre stretch from El Dorado Blvd. at the Gulf Freeway, down and around Baybrook Mall, across NASA Road One, and south to where Grissom Street ends, less than a half mile from Clear Creek. From its northernmost point to its southernmost point is 3.8 miles. One owner, CDC Houston Inc., has control of the entire property. They are affiliated with Southbrook Corporation, Coventry Development Corporation, Eastfield Realty, and Clearfield Realty, all with ties to NYC. Anybody know what is planned on this site, which is practically infill?

I was browsing the newspaper called South Belt Leader dated December 4, 1925 and came across race track called Galveston-Houston Speedway located half way between Galveston and Houston in Webster, TX. A national speedway between Galveston and Houston, destined to be perhaps the fastest automobile board track in the world, will be a reality by spring. This was announced yesterday by C.E. Brinsdon, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and Walter H. Myers of Harrisburg. The track will be located at Webster, between the two cities. The Galveston-Houston Speedway will be a one and one-quarter mile oval, banked from ten degrees on the straightaways to forty-eight degrees on the curves. The width will be fifty feet over all. The running surface will be two by fours on edge and laid lengths. Approximately 4,500,000 feet of yellow pine and seventy five tons of nails will be required to build the giant bowl. The speedway will have a stadium grandstand on the home stretch to seat 15,000 persons and a bleacher on the back stretch to seat 10,000. Three tunnels will be made under the track to provide entrance to the infield, consisting about 100 acres, will accommodate more than 100,000 persons and 8,000 automobiles at each event.

So, I was reliving my 2008 Galveston vacation (some HAIFers may remember that I took a regular Houston vacation in 2008, but that was in the spring. No one remembers that? OK) with the Google Maps API, and I noticed that the Home Depot, the one at 20251 Gulf Freeway, just south of Baybrook Mall, has a completely empty parking lot. I can't find anything, however, that proves Home Depot closed this particular location (even though it seems to have happened nearly two years ago). Is it closed?

I was browsing around Houston Chronicle articles, and I found this tidbit from 1991: This isn't a huge surprise to me (I had read that there was a McDonald's inside a Sears in Michigan in the 1980s), but I'm wondering which two Sears stores in town had the Golden Arches inside. I think it would be something built in the 1980s, so I'm guessing one of the three 'brook malls, but I could be wrong? Anyone remember?

If you travel on the southbound frontage road near the Baybrook mall, you can see all sorts of land being cleared and concrete padding being poured. This appears to be different from the mall expansion that just finished. I'm just wondering what else could be going up...

Didn't get much done at work today. Was busy watching the excavator take down 400 Medical Center Blvd. There has been a leasing sign out front for a long time with a rendering of the medical office building that will replace this one. nothing special though. IMAG0165 by Not.Larry.Dierker, on Flickr

I was driving over Bay Area Blvd. and noticed two cranes in the distance in the direction of Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. Does anyone know of what those are about?

Aerial photo I shot from a helicopter above Webster Texas. The medical center district., originally uploaded by colorblindpicaso. We don't see pictures of Webster very often, and certainly not from the air. Great to see this rare pic in the HAIF pool. Thanks to colorblindpicaso for this one. You can see lots more great pictures, and add your own -- dive in to the HAIF Flickr Pool.
