Do any old-timers remember the original incarnation of UHD, the University of Houston Downtown School, located at 925 Caroline, downtown? My father taught there and once mentioned that the Caroline building had previously housed a paint store. My father was Mr. O.R. Hicks. He taught English in the night school there from the late fifties until his retirement in 1973. I can't find anything in Wikipedia or elsewhere about the first UHD. The current one, at One Main Street, was established in 1974. My father may have planned his retirement to coincide with the closing of the U of H Downtown where he taught, but at 22 I didn't have those details on my radar. In any event, I wonder if any HAIFers either actually remember or have heard anything about the original University of Houston Downtown School.

I moved into Near Northside a few years ago. I could feel the growth and potential, loved the area. A few commercial places popped up soon after I moved in. Things seemed good. But since, the Hardy Yards project is all but failed and 2020 seems to have sapped the momentum the neighborhood had going. Other than Elysian Viaduct giving us insanely great access to downtown, the neighborhood feels stagnant. We’re boxed in by 5th Ward’s cancer cluster to the east. And the Heights seems like the find a way to push less desirable projects to our side of i45. What y’alls opinion on the outlook of the neighborhood?

I'm a student there, planning to graduate in May 2009. Everyone in Houston knows where UHD is and doesn't get it confused with UH. It's been that way for 35 yrs, why does an outsider (Renu Khator) all of a sudden feel the need to change it? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/hei...ws/5953919.html

As detailed in this thread, the University of Houston-Downtown is going to get a new name. The administrators have picked ten finalists. But what do the HAIFers think? Here's your chance. I'm enabling multi-vote, so pick up to three of your preferred names. You can pick just one or two if you want, too. I don't intend this to duplicate the existing thread, so continue the discussion there.

Bizjournal article It's easy to forget that we have an independent university downtown with over 11,000 students. Once the rail line goes into the Near North, and with student housing there too, could that immediate area north of the campus become the beginnings of a University village, something that the main UH really doesn't have? If not another Westwood next to UCLA, it should at least add another ingredient to the new, improved recipe for renewal in that area.
