I couldn't find any information about it. Here is the picture and caption from that monorail site: http://www.monorails.org/webpix/1956.jpg Now my question is what was "Arrowhead Park"? Was this an amusement park? I couldn't find it on a map of Houston from the mid-1950s.

I was looking at a few HAIF threads combined with looking on historical satellite images, and I found this obscure race track. Looks like, in present-day, this is located at Kirby Drive & NRG Parkway. Makes me think this was having to deal with the Astrodome design/festivities. In the year 1944, you can see the race track was grown-over with grass. I'm thinking this was active in the 1920s. I wonder if this was a test track, or related, to the Arrowhead Speedway a few miles away. This could also be apart of a horse stables property. A horse riding track? I also didn't know that a portion of Old Main Street Road turned into Kirby Drive. I thought it was a Fannin Street swap? Arrowhead Speedway shown at the top of the image located on Old Spanish Trail near South Main Street. In this image, you can see the 4 oval race tracks: Left: Houston (Bellaire) Speedway Bottom: Unknown on OMSR Middle: Arrowhead Speedway Top: Unknown on OMSR

I grew up in the Hiram Clarke area in the 1960's and 70's. Went to Montgomery Elementary, Dowling Junior High, and Madison High. We used to go to the South Main Drive In, (then later McClendon Triple). Don't know if this is the same but I do recall going to the go carts on South Main. It was located on the southern side of the street past Willowbend and before the South Loop, it was on one side of the fire station. Had a lot of fun there!

HAIF user @blue92mentioned a race track on Holmes Road and South Main. I had to see for myself! Looks to be located near present-day 11333 Cliffwood Drive near Greenwillow Street, backing up to South Main Street. The tracks seem to have grown over with grass in 1944 and 1953. In 1973, you can see the Willowbend neighborhood taking shape. You can actually see two oval tracks. There is a small track within the larger oval track. Anyone know anything about this? An amazing find!!

I was looking around the landscape of the of South Main coordinator in the 1950s and found a zig-zag race track (which would either be motorcycle dirt bike racing - motocross, or go-kart racing) next to the old Sam Houston Airport located on South Main Street. This race track was located at the present-day Hillcroft Street off of South Main Street. With addresses, around, 12417 Hillcroft Ave. near 13755 South Main St. The race track existed before that section of Hillcroft street was built. Anyone know about this track? Would love to know a name, or address, so I can research it further. With oval tracks, it's always a hit or miss if they are actual race tracks as they could be horse riding rings instead. With a track orientation like this, this can only be a race track of sorts? It's next to the airport, but I doubt planes would make all those loopy zig-zag turns. What else could it be?

I remember going to Playland Park in Houston in the 1950s as a kid, fond memories!. My step-dad operated the motor boats,my brother and I would operate all of the lock levers to let boats out and in,that wouldn't have happened these days!. Please share your memories. We lived on the old Chocolate Bayou Road, and now I've heard it is "Cullen Blvd." We were close to Pearland,8 miles south of Holmes Rd.,near the Brazoria/Harris county line. What is out there now??. I remember there were cemeteries around us and not much else!. Thanks, Ron Hoover Denver Co.

I don't think so, but I'm not positive. I always thought that the track came after the park was built. Maybe Sparky can comment. There was a dirt track off Stella Link between Bray's Bayou and Bellaire Blvd back in the late 20's - mid 30's, referred to as Bellaire Speedway, I think.

HAIF user @blue92mentioned a race track on South Post Oak and South Main. I had to see for myself! This would have been where present-day Waukesha-Pearce Industries is located, at 12320 South Main Street. Using Google Earth, an image dated December 31, 1944 there wasn't a track there. By the time December 31, 1952 came the oval tracks (appear) to be overgrown with plant life. So the track might have been active in the late 1940s into early 1950s? Anyone know what this is about? Does an oval automatically mean it's a race track of sorts? Could these oval shapes be used for farming or an energy setup? Or maybe a athletes school track? I was looking on Historic Aerials and noticed there was an oval track off Willowbend Blvd. on Craighead Drive. Looks like it was active in the 1960s and early 1970s. This is located a few blocks from South Main Street. Could this be a track and field track for athletes? Does anyone recall this? Was it a Go-Kart track? Very cool find! I was looking at Meyer's Speedway on Google Earth and noticed an amazing discovery! There was another, smaller, track that pre-dates Meyer's Speedway! This was located across the street, on South Main Street and Dunlap Street. I assume this was a trial design track for the forthcoming Meyer's Speedway? Or maybe this was the original track, and since the speedway was such a popular hit they expanded up the road? In 1953 you can see the track on the left: In 1978 the track was grown-over with commercial development, and Meyer's Speedway appears across Hillcroft Street. The commercial development is the old Woolworth's Department Store (Safeway Grocery?) shopping center? I assume that is Butler Stadium across Meyer's Speedway? There was supposed to be a golf range/course next to Meyer's Speedway on Hillcroft & South Main. Maybe that came soon after? Image credit: https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer 1953: 1957: Looks like there were also two small tracks just outside the Meyer's Speedway. I assume these were test tracks, or maybe fun Go-Kart tracks? Or maybe even spectator seating?

I was looking at 1957 pictures of the Arrowhead Speedway located on Old Spanish Trail when I noticed a pair of oval tracks just open the road on Fannin Street. The 2 tracks are different sizes. Looks like one could be a race course and the other a test track? Or one is a fun Go-Kart track? I wonder if the Arrowhead Speedway needed extra track space and decided to build more? This could be related to horses. This might be apart of a stables? I don't think this was apart of the Murel Goodell's Monorail, Inc. test line? That would have been in a straight line? I was browsing some Texas race track forums and someone mentioned: https://www.lonestarspeedzone.com/topic/26900-old-aerial-pics-of-race-tracks/page/2/ If you go to Playland Park and then pan north/northeast, you will see a little 1/10 mile oval track behind what appears to be a building and located to the east of South Main as it gradually turns. That was another test track and the one on another thread that describes Larry Schild and I testing our midgets. It became a Go-Kart track and was converted to Go-Kart racing as Quarter Midget Racing began to die in Houston. I think I remember the 1/10 mile oval track, as a Go-Kart Ride track in the 1960s. Didn't it belong to someone formerly involved in Quarter Midget Racing? Possibly a racer named Johnny? He would have been about your age, and possibly later operated a road course Go-Kart ride facility farther out South Main, past the South Loop Freeway. I went to Historicaerials and spanned South Main in the 1950s and 1960s and discovered a small oval race track located on South Main Street near Hiram Clarke Road. I assume this was what the poster in the Lonestarspeedzone thread was talking about? Also could have been horse stables as well? Very, very cool find!! Oddly enough, Google Earth could not locate this track, only Historicaerials. I guess they were different satellites. Well, it actually looks like Google's time frame is a bit different. The track was non existent, on Google, in 1953 and was disappearing in 1978. Image credit: https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer In 1978 the track was swallowed by an empty field. You can see part of the oval track still there. I believe that's also the McClendon Triple Drive-In Theater across Hiram Clarke located at 11991 South Main Street. That's massive!

Race Track On Old Main Street Rd At Holcombe Blvd.
Highrise Tower posted a topic in Historic Houston
I was looking at a few HAIF threads combined with looking on historical satellite images, and I found this obscure race track. In this 1944 image, you can see an oval track near the intersection of Main & Holcombe. The oval track is located off Old Main Street Road. This could be a horse riding stables as well. Or a small test track for other speedways in the area. There were several around. My research turned up this: https://www.lonestarspeedzone.com/topic/26900-old-aerial-pics-of-race-tracks/page/2/ If you go to Playland Park and then pan north/northeast, you will see a little 1/10 mile track behind what appears to be a building and located to the east of South Main as it gradually turns. Woah! I found one of the first rodeos of Houston! I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Informer dated February 23, 1924 and came across a business ad for Cattlemen's Rodeo at the End of South Main Street. This was before the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition in the 1930s. I believe. Bassett Blakely & Frank Y. Dew Present. Under Personal Direction Tom L. Burnett. The Most Thrilling, Sensational, and Grueling Contests o.f Cowboy Sports Ever Staged In Texas The Cattlemen's Rodeo. Special Arena Seating 10,000- End of South Main Street. You could buy the tickets at downtown's Rice Hotel. Cattlemen's Rodeo Headquarters - Second Floor Republic Building. Phone - Preston 3327. From what I read, Tom L. Burnett was a wealthy rodeo businessman. A Hollywood Star. The Houston Post dated February 25, 1924: Others I found during the same time period. Sakowitz Bros. ad.

HAIF, Does anyone recall when the Houston Astrodome had a race track in the 1960s and 1970s? I guess the address would have been 8400 Kirby Drive? I'm looking for information. Does HAIF know about this trace track/speedway? Thanks. Astro Grand Prix in the Astrodome.
