Finally found the original TIRR building! The TIRR hospital system was founded in 1957 by Lamar Fleming, Jr., William Spencer, and Leon Jaworski. The hospital assumed the functions of the Southwestern Poliomyelitis Respiratory Center at the Jefferson Davis Hospital. William A. Spencer, MD was the Medical Director of the SPRC. The original address was 1801 Buffalo Drive, but since has changed to 1801 Allen Parkway. Here's a photo of the JDH annex building built some 30-years after the original hospital was built. Outside the hospital, patients in an Iron Lung type of device. The interior of the hospital showing all the mechanical medical devices used.

The TIRR hospital system was founded in 1957 by Lamar Fleming, Jr., William Spencer, and Leon Jaworski. The hospital assumed the functions of the Southwestern Poliomyelitis Respiratory Center. Within the original TIRR hospital in the Texas Medical Center was a Rehabilitation Engineering Center. The Texas Rehabilitation Engineering Center was a cooperative center comprising of Texas A&M University, Baylor College of Medicine, and The Institute for Rehabilitation and Researched. The site was 4-1/2 acres big. Note; Also called the Baylor University Medical Rehabilitation Research and Training Center. The architects were Wilson, Morris, Crane, and Anderson. Structural Engineer was Walter P. Moore. Here are photos of the (now demolished) building. Building signage, zoomed in and distorted. Floor plans.

I often wonder how long it will take before the Med Center begins to influence more development south of the bayou (even along South Main). They already have smaller offshoots like TIRR Memorial at S. Braeswood and Kirby, but w/out room to grow north due to the park, I would think chunks of land along S. Braeswood (or the rundown apt complexes near Reliant) could eventually turn to something that better serves the Med Center.

This is the shopping center with Memorial Hermann and CHI St. Lukes at the intersection of Braeswood & Kirby. I had dinner here at Morningstar Thai. Great food and prices, but no alcohol.
