  1. Built in 1938, the St. Joseph Hospital Maternity and Children's Building was located at 1902-1920 LaBranch Street. Designed by the architect Ilton E. Loveless. A photo of the (now demolished) hospital.
  2. Maurice J. Sullivan designed the St. Joseph Hospital Nurses Building located at 1911 Crawford Street. Also referred as St. Joseph's School of Nursing. I believe there was also residences inside the building? I believe that's how nurses buildings are (were) laid out? Both a college and residences.
  3. In 1948, the Cullen family donated money to build the St. Joseph Hospital Cullen Family Building located at 1401 Pierce Avenue. Also designed by Ilton E. Loveless. Decades later, it was home to a Mental Health Care Center.
  4. The old and historic St. Joseph Convent & Chapel is located at 1905 Crawford Street. Designed by Ilton E. Loveless. The chapel is in behind the building.
  5. Some real history here! The St. Joseph's County Hospital burned down in 1894. This is the story. From the book The Episcopacy of Nicholas Gallagher, Bishop of Galveston, 1882–1918. Catholic Building for had been used by the Franciscan priests when they staffed St. Vincent's Parish, by Ursuline Sisters fro New Orleans when they staffed St. Vincent's School (1867-1869), and by these Sisters when they likewise staffed the same school (1869-1873.) The Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament from Victoria had temporarily lived there before moving to Incarnate Word Academy on Crawford Street (April-November, 1873.) St. Joseph's Infirmary was opened to the public on June 1, 1887. Two years later the medical officer for the indigent sick was impressed with the methods of caring for the sick. After the county judge toured the hospital, Mother St. Louis was requested to receive the indigent sick of Harris County. There was quite a bit of dissatisfaction with the old Houston Infirmary on Washington Avenue. Mother St. Luis agreed. The sisters soon expanded their facilities. A new three-story building, St. Joseph's County Hospital, was erected across the street. The sisters were paid 50 cents a day for indigent patients. Private patients paid two dollars a day. The diagnosis of patients with smallpox led to the construction of a smallpox hospital in an abandoned cemetery. There were three hundred victims of smallpox. Approximately sixty died. All of the Sisters volunteered to help at the “pest house.” Four from the growing staff of Sisters were chosen. Unfortunately, Mrs. Flanagan's Boarding House next to the hospital caught fire (October 16, 1894.) Before long, the entire block was in flames. This was no match for the one fire engine the city owned. Two Sisters lost their lives, and a third was seriously wounded, though she survived. This was devastation to the Sisters. In addition to the-- Photo of the hospital that burned down:
  6. Retail strip center located at South Main Street & Murworth Drive. Notable tenants include Lennys Grill & Subs, Hertz, Boost Mobile, St. Joseph Medical Center Cancer Center, and Medical Center Pharmacy. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/9150-Main-St-Houston-TX/24669645/
  7. What's the deal with the construction barrier along the back of Heights Hospital along the 400 block of W 20th street? There has been no activity for at least four months and the street is reduced by cordoning off the East bound lane behind the Hospital.
  8. I could of swore there was a thread covering St. Joseph's future. If anyone finds it feel free to merge Anyways, it looks like the 119year old Hospital has found a new buyer. It appears that the new owner will continue running it as it has been. I think some people suggested turning it into housing, I'm glad it will still remain a hospital. Yeah housing especially moderately priced housing would be a plus for downtown growth, but a hospital is a much needed amenity for the neighborhood. Here's the Chronicle story
  9. I received an e-mail a few minutes ago from someone unhappy that Sisters of Charity Park is closed. According to the writer, it's been closed since Hurricane Ike. He talked to someone at the hospital who told him that even though it's been repaired since the storm, it will not reopen. Does anyone know what's going on with this park? It was one of the hidden jewels of downtown.
