elnina999 has added a photo to the pool: The Sixth Ward is home to the oldest intact neighborhood in Houston, and has the greatest concentration of Victorian homes in the region. Old Sixth Ward is recognized for its historic homes. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although Old Sixth Ward contains many homes from the late 19th century, Houston's lax preservation laws, allowing demolition of most historic properties after a 90-day wait, may eventually eliminate this historic area. This morning, City Council passed the measure...now, instead of delaying demolition for ninety days, the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission has the authority to prevent it. more news in a little bit

Dave at neoHOUSTON shared a recap of a walking tour of the Historic Sixth ward today, it sounded pretty cool... "Overall, it was a fantastic tour, and it was well worth $10. Starting next month, if you walk, ride your bike, or take public transportation to the tour, you receive a $2 discount. And members of GHPA only have to pay $7 per tour. I highly recommend going to the next walking tour on February 15th at 2pm, which will meet downtown outside the Bank of America building and will cover 20th architecture along Main Street." In June, the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission (HAHC) unanimously denied a Certificate of Appropriateness for the demolition of the historic 1880s home at 1814 Lubbock (pictured) in the Old Sixth Ward. The new owner plans to replace the existing one-story wood frame cottage with a multistory home. HAHC denied the application on the grounds that the project would forever remove a historic structure from this National Register and City of Houston Historic District, and that the new construction would not be compatible with the surrounding neighborhood. The proposed building will feature a metal, concrete block and stucco exterior with a turret rising to a height of 49 feet. The surrounding properties are one-story wood frame cottages. Although HAHC denied the Certificate of Appropriateness, the property owner is still going forward with his plans. Houston

The Old Sixth Ward's Annual Victorian Houston Home Tour is THIS SUNDAY, Oct 21, from 12:30 - 5:30 pm. Tickets are available the day of the tour, in front of Dow School (MECA) at 1900 Kane Street, $15 each. Come back in time with us, as you enjoy 'life in the late 19th century', in Houston's first and only protected Historic District. There will be 6 lovely homes to tour, plus a "bonus" workshop full of antique/vintage working tools and machines, used daily by its owner to craft lovelies for family and friends. Also, enjoy ice cream & lemonade in a backyard garden, ride in a horse drawn carriage, enjoy the antics of "The Wheelman" on their antique bicycles, and enjoy live period piano music (part of each hour) from the resident of one of the homes on the tour! Come to the Old Sixth Ward, truly "Home to Houston's History"-- the oldest intact neighborhood in the City of Houston, and the largest concentration of Victorian structures in the region, outside of Galveston. As long as there has been a HAIF there has been the debate over zoning in Houston. The Bayou City inched a little closer to joining the Z club by passing a measure protecting hundreds of homes in the historic Sixth Ward from being torn down. The immediate effect will be to block the construction of a home described as the "Garage Mahal." HAIF members are busy discussing the long-term impact of what some see as the government ripping their rights out of their cold, home-owning hands.

http://ghpa.org/tours/ The Old Sixth Ward, one of Houston's most beloved historic neighborhoods, was settled in the mid-to-late 19th century. Its principal developer was W.R. Baker, president of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad and mayor of Houston; many early residents of Old Sixth Ward were railroad workers. The early residents also included a number of skilled craftsmen who decorated their cottages with folk Victorian ornamentation. The tour includes the former homes of cosmetics queen Mary Kay Ash and famed boogie-woogie pianist Peck Kelley, the inspiration for the hit song "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar." The tour also visits St. Joseph's Catholic Church, which was rebuilt after the great storm of 1900. Old Sixth Ward is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a City of Houston historic landmark. Tickets will be sold from 5:30 to 6 p.m. at Old Sixth Ward Community Park, Lubbock and Trinity streets. [map] Street parking is available for free on Sundays along Lubbock and side streets, but remember to observe parking restrictions. Please note that this tour will not visit the interiors of any private homes and rest rooms will not be available.

Acknowledging that Houston has neglected its history, Mayor Bill White promised Wednesday to develop a powerful new law to protect Victorian-era houses in the Old Sixth Ward. He proposed creation of a special district within the neighborhood west of downtown with design guidelines for construction and renovation, along with financial incentives to discourage demolition of historical houses. Though many details of the proposed preservation ordinance have not been worked out, White's aides said the measure is unlikely to include an outright prohibition on demolishing historical buildings. Preservationists said the mayor's comments reflect growing support for stronger efforts to protect historical neighborhoods and buildings in a city whose preservation laws have been criticized as inadequate. http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4516655.html -
