  1. Shriners Hospital for Children in Texas Medical Center is closing and parents are shocked https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/shriners-hospital-for-children-in-texas-medical-center-is-closing-and-parents-are-shocked/285-275e9430-e2e7-4939-aac0-5627a7566fac HOUSTON — A big change is coming to the Texas Medical Center, the Shriners Hospital for Children will be closing that location and consolidating with the Galveston branch in 2021. Mel Bower, Director of Marketing for Shriners, confirms the Houston Shriners hospital will consolidate with the Shriner’s hospital in Galveston. Bowers says they are consolidating to make services more efficient for patients, who he says shuttle back and forth between the hospitals. Bowers says one reason the Galveston location was chosen is, “The presence of the burns center in Galveston was an important consideration.” Shriners says they hope to bring as many of their current team as possible and that all services offered in the Med Center location will be offered in Galveston. "We will continue to offer all of our existing services, the benefit is that now they will all exist under one roof,” Bowers said. As for what will become of the building that one the Houston Shriners moves out, Bowers says they just don’t know yet.
  2. I noticed an article from 100 years ago that said the Methodist Hospital was moving to a (new) home, which was the former Dr. Oscar L. Norsworthy Hospital in Midtown. That would mean there was a previous building. Maybe, and more of a church funded operation, the Methodist Hospital started out in this single story residential home? Anyone know anything about this?
  3. Shriner's Hospital, then called Arabia Temple Crippled Children's Hospital, was built in 1952 in the Texas Medical Center. I could never find the address. Any help HAIF Historians? Designed by "star architect" Alfred C. Finn the building stood massive. Alfred C. Finn's rendering/drawing of the hospital.
  4. Given that the old (most recently new, built in the 1990s) Shriner's Hospital is about to be demolished, thought I would share some of the previous buildings they built in the Texas Medical Center. The Arabia Temple Crippled Children's Clinic was located at 1402 Outer Belt Drive. Outer Belt Drive no longer exists and was renamed Cambridge Street. Photograph: Postcard:
  5. Rumor has it that Shriner's Burns Hospital will not reopen. They got two feet of water in their building, now they want to call it quits. Come on, Methodist Hospital had two floors totally inundated in 2001, along with Baylor, Memorial Hermann and others in the Texas Medical Center. There was never any discussions about not reopenning. These instituitions rebuilt, and protected themselves from it ever happenning again. What is it with these Shriner people?
