Seymour Fogel American 1911-1984 Black and White II, 1973 Value: $4,500.00 mixed media & gouache on illustration board 40 x 30 inches (unframed) 42 ¾ x 32 ¾ (framed) Unsigned, documented This painting was presented as a gift from the Seymour Fogel family to the current owner. Subtitled “Black & White II”, (Fogel often left works untitled), it is one of the paintings from the “Color Flow” series he created in 1973. “Black & White II” is one of two “Black and White” paintings known to have been produced within the “Color Flow” series. In this painting (and his other black and white works) the artist desired to present to the viewer the essence of grace and beauty through a lack of color, allowing the viewer to absorb the impact of the sensual lines and curves. Only then, the artist felt, would the viewer be capable of fully comprehend and appreciate the dynamic strength of imagery in his other paintings. Always seeking to further explore the essence of minimalism, Seymour Fogel, along with Elsworth Kelly and their peers, were instrumental in expanding how we, the audience, appreciate the beauty of our surroundings.
