  1. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed fencing had gone up around the Shell station near the corner of N Durham Drive and N Loop West. Within a few days, equipment had been brought to the site and the station was demolished. I haven't had the chance to take any pictures of the activity, but they have removed almost all of the building above ground and are now working on removing the remaining structure underground. Does anyone know if there is a project scheduled to go up on this site? (If this topic has been touched upon in another thread, it would be great if someone could link it here.) Here is the site: https://goo.gl/maps/iCPmBW81wcq.
  2. We are Gay couple moving from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Houston. We have 3 boys (4-5-8 years old) two are black. I'm Native American and my husband is European. What do you all think about The Woodlands & Spring Texas for a place to buy a home and settle down? Do you all think that those two areas are nice, safe or open minded and tolerant? ---Travis & Stephen travisbernard.hunt@gmail.com
  3. Corpus TXDOT approved for a new $ 1 billion dollar bridge replacement of the current 1953-built span. Construction set to begin in 2016 and will take 5 years. When complete, the new 4-mile long span will become the longest cable-stayed bridge in the nation, 3rd longest in the world. http://www.kiiitv.com/story/28946603/new-harbor-bridge-to-be-longest-cable-stayed-bridge-in-nation
  4. Hi, I have been in the market for a home for about 2 years now. Most of what I found was a pick and choose of different qualities with each house. This is fine but I wanted to flirt with the idea of the costs of designing and building a townhouse on a piece of already purchased land in say First Ward. I know that in 2015 people mentioned it could cost somewhere around $150 per square foot. Would you this is accurate these days? Are there any major issues to be aware of when doing this. I know these builders get construction discounts when building multiple townhomes on a piece of land but this would be a single house. Any insight on the costs would be great!
  5. What can we do to improve our parks system? What parks would you say could use renovations, and how would you like for them to be renovated? Where do you see the potential or need for new parks? i think improving our parks system, paired with a green roof initiative could really change a lot of peoples perceptions about Houston from being a dirty polluted oil dominated city, to an environmentally friendly, beautiful green city. Here are a few stats for why I think we could stand to work on our parks system. "In seven of the nation's largest cities, nine out of 10 residents live within a one-half mile walk to a park, according to the report. The seven are New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington, D.C." only 45% of Houstons residents (or half the percentage of the 7 cities listed above) live within walking distance of a park.. thats over 1.2 million people who cannot walk to a park in this city. (the average of the 40 largest cities in the US was 68%.. the highest was San Francisco at a whopping 98% of its population) Houston spends $40 per resident on its parks system a year. less than half of the national average ($82). compared to the highest spender (Washington D.C.), who spends $397 a year per resident on its parks, we spend almost 10 times less on our parks. We didnt even make the top 10 in any of these "snapshots", covering baseball/softball fields, basketball courts, swimming pools, skate parks, rec centers/senior centers, and dog parks. http://www.tpl.org/sites/default/files/cloud.tpl.org/pubs/ccpe-cityparkfacts-2012.pdf

  7. I was watching tonight's KBTX 6 PM news and they reported that the closed Albertson's shopping center at south College and University Drive will be mostly demolished for an infill type student apartment building. I can't find any online articles about it yet, but I will post as soon as KBTX puts this evening's stories online and I can find any site plans or announcements from the developer. Apparently It will be called the "The Stack", appears to be 4 or 5 stories, will have ground floor retail and 2 levels of underground parking, and have about 400? units. Apparently it won't actually cover the whole center, but rather end at Hurricane Harry's which will remain.
  8. Hello, I am the marketing manager for Yellow Rose Distilling. We have recently just launched a campaign to raise funds to complete the build out of Houston's first distillery and first tasting room. Once this is completed you will be able to take tours just like at Saint Arnold or Karbach. We are centrally located and I am really excited and passionate about this! For those of you who do not know what a Kickstarter is, it is a way to raise money for projects, ideas, ect. You set a goal and if you reach it, you get the funds, if not, you do not. It is all or nothing. When you pledge, there are rewards for each level or amount that you pledge. The rewards range from rocks glasses, parties at the distillery, barrels and on up! All pledges count, big or small. Please help us out! It would be greatly appreciated! If you can't donate, please spread the word! Visit our Kickstarter at: www.start.yellowrosedistilling.com Thank you! Kristi Cutlip
  9. Hey, I just came across this idea that sounds really cool in theory, but I'm wondering if you experts out there would know if it's actually technically possible. Chameleon House: http://marblar.com/challenge/earthhack-sustainable-homes/idea/978 Homes are built with colour changing tiles respective to heat. They are black when it's cold and white when it's hot. This saves money on heating and air conditioning. It seems a bit extreme, but what do you guys think? Do you know of any materials that would work as colour-changing tiles?
