This building is in the local media today. I'd rather not say why

Really good news for downtown. KBR has decided NOT to consolidate into a new campus in West Houston, but will instead expand downtown. They expect to ultimately need 1.2 million square feet of office space downtown. That appears to be about 300,000 square feet more than they currently occupy downtown. HBJ KBR story

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet... http://realtynewsreport.com/2014/11/18/stream-partnership-buys-600-jefferson-tower-in-downtown-houston/ It would be a complete shame if they turned it into a glass box. The exterior could use some TLC, but why not just use that money for the interior/lobby?

I looked up the Hyatt Regency hotel on Orbitz.com. I saw the one in Houston and the one in Dallas. The picture of the one in Dallas looked huge, so I thought it was bigger than the one in Houston. But a co-worker of mine told me that both hotels are about the same size. She said that she stayed in both of them. The only picture of the one I saw in Houston just showed the front entrance. That's what made me think it was smaller than Big Ds. Have any of you ever stayed in one or both of those hotels?

Found it! 3D/International was formed from the founders of Neuhaus + Taylor Architects, and maybe a principal from CRS too. The principals of the company Neuhaus + Taylor had merged with to form 3D/International seven men in all—left the company. Two important Neuhaus + Taylor partners left. Finally Harwood Taylor left, too. What remained was a multinational architectural and engineering company with a clear chain of command, whose three top officers are not building designers and to which first-rate design is decidedly a goal rather than the goal. In 1977 the name of the company was changed to 3D/International. Two years later, Gerald Hines built the 3D/International Tower (designed by 3D/I), a 21-story building with an expensive stainless steel and glass skin, on a choice site at the corner of San Felipe and the West Loop.

I didn't see a thread about this cool, 1950s, office building designed by Neuhaus & Taylor. Thought I would share information. Only a matter of time until it's demolished for something more modern. Also a Gerald Hines building! Very cool.

I've just taken an interest in Rice University. Has there ever been any year(s) that it won any championship? The only pro football player who comes to my mind who attended Rice was Tommy Kramer. When I attended the University of Arkansas from 1984-86, I remember that Rice University was in the same conference. Edit: 1891: The William M. Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art filed its state charter in the Texas capital May 19, 1891. 1912: The Rice Institute. 1960: William Marsh Rice University on July 1, 1960. Present day, in short, Rice University.

Thought I would create a thread on this 1962 condo high-rise in River Oaks. I searched and there was only a handful of mentions in random threads. Has anyone lived here? Is it a good place to live? Who was the original architect and builder?

I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated October 18, 1967 and came across an overlooked Hines development. Electric Living Center Will Give Many Answers To Homeowners The Electric Living Center, a new facility to serve as a consumer information center on all phases of electrical usage in the home, is being built by Houston Lighting & Power Company. The all-electric Center will be located on a 1.12-acre tract fronting on the east side of the West Loop (Highway 610) between San Felipe and Westheimer. Its proximity to the Southwest Freeway and Post Oak Interchange will make it easily reached from all parts of Houston. It is being built to HL&PCO specifications by Gerald D. Hines Interests and will be the second building completed in the Smith Office Park complex. Architects are Neuhaus & Taylor, consulting engineers, Chenault & Brady. General contractor is Harvey Construction Company. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls will form the 50-foot front and two 100-foot sides of the building, which will be heated and cooled by two electric heat pumps. Exposed structural material will be bush hammered concrete. The appliance display area will be in the front (west end) of Center. The general public will be able to inquire here about electric cooking, heating and air conditioning, home and garden lighting, kitchen design and arrangement, proper home wiring and the use of small appliances. The two electric kitchens--- One on the stage of the auditorium and the other at the rear of the building. --- Will be used for cooking demonstrations to groups meeting in the center. A luminous ceiling will light both the auditorium and display area. The ceiling’s light intensity will be controlled by a dimmer switch making infinite variations possible between zero- and 200-foot candles.

This house is on Friar Tuck in Sherwood Forest, very close to the famous mini French Palace. Anyone know anything about this house? It looks like a good, clean, simple design, probably 1960s.

Other than the photos in the Houston Mod catalog profiling the architect, and the images in Ephemeral City, do any of you have or know of any images of the Cullinan House by Hugo V. Neuhaus, Jr.? I have always been interested in that home, one of the biggest losses in terms of mod demolition for Houston, I feel.

I've updated the Houston Mod website with some buildings. Some have research and some ask for "reader input". I still have more to put in, like 3336 Richmond and the Unitarian Church in the Museum area but this is a good start. Edit: According to Rice University, 3336 Richmond Ave. was developed by Hines Interests / Gerald Hines. What I did on my Spring Break... Mods still with us: Fred Winchell Photography Studio and Apartments Exxon Research Center 3333 Fannin Building Macham Building - this one is really amazing, a ground up restoration. 4910 Willowbend Blvd. Phoenix Insurance Company of Hartford Building Pontiac Motor Division Building Bendit House Brier House Taylor House First Christ Scientist Church Bellaire University of St. Thomas Congregation Beth Israel Temple The Rothko Chapel Gibraltar Building (now Bank of America) Humble Oil (Exxon/Mobil) Building Endangered: Bettis Apartments - I wish they could pick this up and move it Friden Building http://www.houstonmod.org/buildings.aspx?sub=swu As always, if you want to add a building, let me know.
