  1. since the downtown post office has been under renovation i had not been to the library. so i went to my local branch in montrose. i arrived 15 minutes early and within 5 minutes there were abut 6 homeless fellas lining up in front of the door. when the branch opened they filed into the men's room and during the next half hour emerged --- some with wet hair and one with a fresh gallon container of water. a few switched out their items from their old plastic bags with new library bags (for books) and left. i know they have set up recent ordinances as far as cleanliness and behaviorin libraries, some aimed at keeping the locations from being a destinationsimilar to covenant house (which is nearby and free). i would feel less odd ifthey also used the library and were cleaning up in preparation to look at books or use the computer. in fairness, i suppose the only way it really affected me was not wanting to usethe restroom there and getting the creeps when one fella with random parts of his head shaved kept checking me out.

  6. These 3 multifamily houses are getting demo'd. My guess is that it will eventually be either townhomes or some sort of larger multifamily.

  8. Apparently they are about to open soon, they have a "Hiring Now" banner in front. This is next to the old Bar Method that looks to be a yoga studio now.
  9. Haven't checked to see if there's already a demo permit, but the windows have been taken out, the entire building is covered with graffiti, and there's a prominent "FOR SALE' sign. . Corner of Westheimer and Mulberry St.
  10. In 1917, Ross Sterling was building a mansion in Montrose located at 4410 Rossmoyne Street (later Yoakum Boulevard.) Mike and Ima Hogg needed a place to live while their Bayou Bend estate was being built. Ross Sterling leased the property to the Hoggs for a few years. When Mike Hogg left the property for Bayou Bend, another oilman moved in. Walter Benona Sharp. In 1902, Sharp, Ed Prather, and Howard Hughes Sr., founded the Moonshine Oil Company. University of Saint Thomas owned the property for decades up until demolition. The building had numerous names, including Second Women's Residence, and Spiritual Hall. Photos of the old mansion. Sadly was demolished for a few 3-story luxury town homes.
  11. Alfred C. Finn designed the residence of Walter Fondren located at 3410 Montrose Boulevard. Designed in the 1920s. Now a Hines skyscraper towers over the old mansion.
  12. During the 1950s, mental health treatment and science really started gaining traction in Houston. One of the initial companies researching was The Mental Health Association of Houston and Harris County. Located in a 2-story house in Montrose at 916 Branard Street. This hospital isn't not very well known so I'm glad I am sharing with HAIF. Very cool history here. Edit: This was lead by Mrs. Viola Perkins, Executive Director.

Permit applications filed with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission indicate that the restaurant is headed to 1201 Westheimer Road, in the space once occupied by now-shuttered Tex-Mex restaurant El Real. The permit application was filed on April 17, which means that despite the coronavirus chaos, plans are still in motion for the Houston outpost of Acme Oyster House. “Acme has been very excited about entering the Houston market for a while now,” says Grant Walker, the Lee & Associates broker who repped Acme Oyster House in the deal. “We were looking for the right site to come available, and that happened when Bryan Caswell decided to close down El Real.” For the unfamiliar, Acme Oyster House has been a staple in New Orleans since 1910, serving an extensive menu of Cajun and Creole favorites like gumbo, red beans and rice, po’ boys, and of course, oysters. Oysters are shucked to order and served raw, char-grilled, or in a boozy oyster shooter. The restaurant has evolved into a chain over the years, and now operates multiple Louisiana outposts and restaurants in Florida and Alabama, but its New Orleans outpost, located in the French Quarter, continues to attract tourists in droves. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the chain has closed some restaurants while offering takeout at others, according to its website. No timeline has been set for Acme Oyster House’s debut, largely because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We are still moving forward and very excited to bring Acme to Houston,” Walker says.   16. i went to the donut shop in this strip shopping center and the lady said she, so vino and osaka restaurant were leaving? she thought it was because the rent was raised and no one can afford it-- 2 othere business have tried to make it there and failed-- if it goes empty--then what? is it too new to tear down and build apartment building like the ones being finished on LOvett blvd?

Hyon Sook Lee of the R. Alex Group represented the buyer. Mark Davis of Davis Commercial represented the seller. The building will be developed as the second location for BORI, a South Korean steakhouse at 1453 Witte Road in Spring Branch.   20. So, I was talking to some coworkers today, and we got off on the topic of the flag on top of our building. One of the guys that had been there for many many years informed us that the US flag on the top of the building was once MUCH MUCH larger than it is today....he said that, in fact it used to drape over the building and cover up the windows of the 43rd and 42nd floors when the wind wasn't blowing. As to why we have a smaller flag now...well apparently when the wind was blowing at a good clip and 'ol glory was pulled out taut, it created so much force that it damaged the top 3 stories of the building that the pole mounts down through. The American General CEO flew the huge flag that he wanted, even though the engineers had told him it was a no no. Personally, I think the flag should be double or triple its current size....the mass of the building makes it look kinda puny.

  24. This building on Montrose has been slowly removing the brick and now an excavator his finishing off the building. It's considered part of a Houston Historical District- Audubon Place and will have to be rebuilt according to standards set by the district. When I first moved here the area wasn't a Historical District but a few years after it became one. Before that we had 4 townhome complexes go in. After it became a Historical District any new homes have be built to that standard and 2 have. Edit: The Historical District Map shows it's a non contributing lot, I wonder if that will change what can or cannot be built.
