November Mod of the Month Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday, November 18, 2018, for a Mod of the Month open house event from 2 - 4 PM. Help us find a new preservation-minded owner for this vintage modern house located in the Parkwest neighborhood, about 10 miles southwest of downtown Houston. The sensible flow of the original 1960 layout has been preserved yet freshened and refinished to sparkle once again. Note the broad glass expanse with views to the beamed patio. The den features a raised ceiling, and the kitchen's flush-front cabinetry has been renewed. Parkwest is a deed-restricted community within the City of Houston and is served by the HISD. It's also convenient to the Galleria, Heights, and Washington Avenue areas. Herbert William Linnstaedter of the firm Swenson & Linnstaedter designed, built, and originally owned the complex. Considered extremely fashionable and exceptional in design when completed, the details include wood beamed sloped ceilings, brick interior walls, copper-trimmed fire places, and specially detailed windows. The terraced grounds are beautifully landscaped and include a sparkling swimming pool. Herbert William Linnstaedter (1925-1996) was a native Texan who, as a teen, fought with the 99th infantry division at the Battle of the Bulge. He then graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in architecture and further studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He was certified as an architect in Texas in 1957 and was an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Houston. He was married to Celestine Linnstaedter who was a doctor of psychiatry at the VA Hospital. Swenson & Linnstaedter shared an office with Donald Barthelme where a number of Houston's most modern buildings were designed. In 1960 the firm opened a branch office in Dallas, Texas.
