  1. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated May 25, 1950 and came across one of the famous Meyers residential address! Sadly, this doesn't look like a mansion. Located in the area of West University/Rice Village, it was a typical home. I believe Frank Meyer built his mansion a few decades later at 9111 South Post Oak Road. Tried to look for an old aerial view of the home but there's too many trees blocking it! I believe the original house is still there? Seniors Mark Time 'Til Graduation With Parties Parties for girl graduates-to-be continue as commencement day draws closer-- Mrs. Frank S. Meyer honored their daughters Gloria Meyer and Frances Berryman, with a tea Saturday afternoon at the Meyer home, 2336 Bolsover.
  2. wow!! A Jos. F. Meyer location in Third Ward on Calhoun Road? Never seen that before! I wonder if this was the last location before the (enterprise) shut down? This advertisement and location is incredibly rare. Cool find! Found this in the Rice University yearbook The Campanile dated 1966. Jos. F. Meyer Co. Wholesale Distributors Automotive Parts and Equipment Tools, Hardware and Industrial Supplies 4701 Calhoun / Houston, Texas "Serving Transportation Since 1876"
  3. Yea that is a good article, I guess I should ask about the history of the Spanish Style home that one has been there since before 1944. AS seen in the pic here. http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion44.png 1953 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion53.png 1964 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion64.png 02 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion02.png Also thx for the responses guys I appreciate it.
  4. A little confused. I thought Jos F. Meyer Co. was located at 802-812 Franklin Ave. Or at 315 Travis St? Found a whole new location for the business! Very cool history here! Can we date this photograph? The JOS F. Meyer Company and machine shop at 201 Milam produced and sold a number of goods. It employed blacksmiths and wagon makers. As contractors for the railroad in 1929, the company also handled heavy hardware and automotive equipment.
  5. Maybe I am posting this in the wrong section, but I live in Meyerland and I have often wondered why we do not have a Super Walmart in the SW Houston/Meyerland area. We have a normal Walmart off of South Post Oak and 610 (which is always REALLY crowded), but not a Super WM. Anyone else think there needs to be one?
  6. This 7.5 acre tract located just west of the intersection of South Main and Hiram Clarke may be best suited for light industrial, warehouse, storage or other commercial use. The completed South Main/Highway 90 corridor provides convenient access to all areas of Houston. Located just west of the intersection of South Main & Hiram Clarke. 7. Do any of your guys have photos or info on what I have always known as the "old Meyer property" at the NE corner of 610 Loop South & S. Post Oak, right across the freeway from the MeyerPark retail property. I know there were some scenes from a movie shot at this location, there appears to be the old footprint of a home, and there is (or was) a small retail building at the SE corner of this property that used to be a gas station ( i think ). Anyone have any citable information about this property or any photos? HCAD.org doesn't describe it at all except for the northern edge next to the bayou as being HCFCD (Harris County Flood Control District) ownership. Kevin Jackson Moderator edit: The Frank K. Meyer residential property was located at 9111 South Post Oak Road in 1967. In present-day 2022, the Harris County Flood Control District water retention pond has an address of 4502 South Loop.
  8. I was looking for information regarding the Meyer Estate on the side of the South Loop and discovered that the Rice University Fondren Library that has a few physical boxes of archives regarding the Meyer family. One box contents says: Photos of the Loraine and George B. Meyer house on Holcombe Blvd. Overview The George Meyer Family Photos and Memorabilia contains family photos, photos of the Loraine and George B. Meyer house on Holcombe Blvd. in Houston, a catalog of the company business, and a resolution on the death of Joseph F. Meyer. Dates: 1916 - 1967. Does anyone recall this property? 9. I recently had Tapester's Grill's veggie burger and man! That burger was fantastic! I believe it was a home made patty. They offered me a frozen peach bellini as well! Great restaurant. Anyone ever shop at this retail center? The area has potential, with the abandoned police substation and water works nearby. This shopping center is owned and managed by MC Management, of the Meyer Family. Loopnet listing: Currently not available, maybe all the space is occupied? https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/4520-4534-Beechnut-St-Houston-TX/11995520/

  14. While looking at The Houston Post dated January 4, 1906 I noticed a business listing for Jos F. Ellwood Hog and Field Fence. Western scrapers and plows. Stalk cutters, plows, harrows, cultivators, and farming implements of every description. Envelope from Jos. F. Meyer Co. dated 1917
  15. I was browsing the newspaper The Texan dated November 14, 1956 and came across a business ad for Meyer Bros. Department Store located at At Bellaire Blvd. At 3rd St. (Presumably 5002 Bellaire Blvd.) I believe this was a stand a lone building? The current site has a Walgreens. The original building must have been demolished. A little confused about the history of the Meyer Bros. They created two businesses? One was a department store (Meyer Bros.) and the other was a grocery store/market called The White House? There are countless advertisements for Meyer Bros. in the 50s and 60s. If I find a cool ad I'll post it. Pretty much all the same though. Any HAIFers have memories here? Do share!! I found a location list of Meyer Bros. locations. See the below quote.

  19. This shopping center located at 5400 - 6810 Bellaire Blvd. has some history. First opened in February 1956. I've been visiting this center a lot lately. Bernie's Burger Bus is addicting! Figured I'd make a thread to keep track of the comings & goings. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/5400-6810-Bellaire-Blvd-Bellaire-TX/11995514/
  20. I found a newspaper add for Meyer Bros. The White House store. I was browsing an old neighborhood newspaper called Southwestern Times. The issue is dated June 21, 1945. This is possible Store Number 9? HAIF had a listing of all the old Meyer Bros stores and number 9 was missing from the list. Please see below.

  23. Does anyone know if there used to be a payphone in Meyerland Park back in the 1980's-1990's, and if yes, where in the park it was located at? I also am curious how long that whale slide has been in the playground area? Any old photos/videos pre-2005 of the park would be very helpful.
