  1. Sad news for anybody, who watched NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston over the years. Former NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston Weatherman Doug Johnson, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 79. Johnson joined NBC 2 in 1962 & stayed until his retirement in 1992. He was also the co-host for "The Scene at 5" with the late Ron Stone.   2. Today is the final day on the air for legendary NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston reporter Phil Archer, who is leaving the station after 44 years with the Houston NBC affiliate. The legendary Houston reporter has covered it all ranging from being stabbed & knocked unconscious during the 1978 Moody Parks Riots coverage & other major events.   3. Just found out NBC 2 Weekday Morning Anchor Taniya Wright is no longer with the station after just 9 months (she joined in August of 2019). According to multiple sources, no other information is available yet. Wright anchored the weekday morning & midday newscasts until today. No information about her future plans were available or disclosed. I should note Wright was on today's morning newscast earlier today, but not in the midday newscast for some reason.   6. It's officially the end of a LONG era at NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston. Legendary NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston News Anchor Bill Balleza announced he will be retiring from the Houston NBC Station effective in January of 2020. He began his journalism career as a TV Reporter for KRON-TV San Francisco, CA in 1971, before joining CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston in 1973. A graduate of San Antonio College, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War & also served as a Marine Scout Sniper during the Tet Offensive of 1968. He & his wife, Melissa have 3 children & 2 grandchildren. He's also an avid woodworker & has designed & built furniture, including for families that he & his NBC 2 colleagues sponsored for Houston Habitat for Humanity. According to Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com, Donchey hadn't been seen or heard from since giving birth to a baby last month. No word on her future plans. Starting on August 27th, weekend morning anchors Sofia Ojeda & Anoushah Rasta will be adding an additional extra half-hour of news to their already 2 hour offerings.   12. Unless y'all have been living under rocks, former KXAN-TV NBC 36 reporter Sophia Beausoleil has recently joined KPRC-TV, on a freelancing reporter basis according to her Instagram page. The Katy native was previously with KXAN-TV NBC 36 from 2012. She also worked with WCIA-TV Champaign, IL & also got her start in TV as Reporter/Anchor/Multimedia Journalist with KOMU-TV 8 Columbia, MO.   14. KTRK-TV Ch. 13 reporter John Fenoglio left the ABC O&O station, having joined the station in May of this year. Mike McGuff of mikemcuff.com will keep us posted on Fenoglio's future endeavors. Previously during her 2 years with KRIS-TV Corpus Christi, Donchey also worked with KZTV Action 10 News, also in the same city.   19. With Nick Giovanni leaving KPRC-TV for WUSA-TV in Washington D.C., the NBC Houston affiliate replaced him with James Starks as one of the station's sports anchors/reporters. Who is James Starks you might ask ? Starks played for the Cincinnati Bengals as a free agent in 2008. Injuries led him to play for the Ancona Dolphins in Italy. Before going to the Pros, Starks was a two-time All-American at Capital University in Columbus, OH. In 2007, he was named the Ohio Athletic Conference's defensive back of the year. Before joining KPRC-TV, he previously worked at WOIO-TV and Fox 8 in Cleveland, where Starks was a sideline reporter and anchor. After 20 years at KPRC-TV NBC 2 Houston, reporter Mary Benton is calling it quits and leaving the TV biz for good and going into the private sector, according to the Houston Chronicle and Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com. "It's certainly with mixed emotions that I'm leaving." Benton told mikemcguff.com. "I'm going to miss my coworkers at Channel 2. Most importantly, I will miss interacting with viewers that have become like friends and family. I was so blessed that I had the opportunity to tell their stories over two decades. I think what I will miss the most is being a voice in the newsroom and represent those that did not have a voice in the media."
