  1. Work seems to be coming along on this. They cleaned the front facade, and it makes a big difference. They are also replacing the canopy over the front entrance with a new one that replicates the original.
  2. Today I discovered a whole new building! Hidden away behind the Cullen Building, is the Jesse H. Jones Building. I believe within the building there is a space called Anderson Hall. Presumably named after Monroe Dunaway Anderson. All the old oil wildcatters definitely donated a lot to our Texas Medical Center. Lots of buildings are named after The Cullens, The Fondrens, The Alkeks, The Jones', etc. One strange thing I noticed is John H. Kirby didn't donate much to the TMC. I don't think there are buildings named after him. The Kirby family must not have been into philanthropy. His career was lumber and eventually petroleum, so maybe not a wildcatter like the rest of them. Edit: Here's the photo I took today:
  3. Another Memorial Hermann hospital that isn't well known (in the architecture world) is the Jones Pavilion named after Jesse H. Jones. Kind of a brutalist design, not much to it. It does feel imposing, it's a large building. Here is a photo I took yesterday. It's the tower.
  4. The library bulding has 3 different names. Orignally called the Jesse H. Jones Library. Took these photos this past week. The street signage and building signage still has Jesse H. Jones name. It's currently called the Texas Medical Center Library though.
  5. I've always seen this beautiful brick building while driving on the feeder of 59. I stopped by for a closer look. Looks like the building is dedicated with Jesse H. Jones Memorial American Red Cross Building
  6. Does anyone have info on the Commerce Towers in Houston? I found a good-sized apartment there for $280,000, and it looks like a great place! What does everyone think of it?
  7. Edit: The DePelcin Faith Home would have had multiple city addresses? There was many buildings, or it was that large? One address was 4950 Memorial Drive. Are there any campus kids {now adults} that lved @ and remember the wonderfull life a kid had while living there during the late 40's to mid 50's @ the Sandman {12 acre} campus. It was located along Shepherd Dr. back when it was a 2 way str. and across the street was Geo. Washing Jr, HS which I thank now has some connection w/HPD and also St. Thomas School for boys. Across the str. from Sandman admin Bldg. was the Florence Crittenten Home for what in those days were termed unwed mothers. Faith Home had a 25 bed Hosp./clinic for the new borns to be adopted. BTW the Home is 112 years old. Yep been around a very long time. The Shepherd campus was build during the '39-'41 time period I believe. Also Pine Tree Camp was a really kool place they would take kids for 3 weeks during the summer. Itz history I heard was that it once was a farm. Anyway over the intervening years the Harris Cnty YMCA took possesion of it. It is still there {709 Riley Fuzzell} in Spring just as I remembered it sum 50+ years ago. Respectfully Danny Mac
  8. Originally called the Kirby Lumber Company Building located at 917 Main Street in Downtown Houston. Designed by local Houston "Star Architect" Alfred C. Finn as well. Anyone have the scoop on Kirby Lofts? They look neat. There are on Main next to CVS/1001 McKinney.
  9. Amazing find in the The Houston Post dated September 1, 1909. Jesse H. Jones Lumber Co. - Phones 24. - Main and Mckinney. W.V. Angle, Manager.
  10. It looks like they're reintroducing retail at the corner of Rusk and Main: http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/Commissions/docs_pdfs/hahc/Application_Materials/April_MATERIALS/712_Main_Gulf_Building_App_Materials.pdf
  11. Harvey did a renovation to this building. https://www.harveycleary.com/projects/methodist-hospital-mary-gibbs-jones-building
  12. Kudos to the current owners (Club Quarters - who weren't named in the article...) for taking the steps to get this designation. Joseph Finger would be proud. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...63&ana=e_du http://www.clubquarters.info/houston.asp http://hotels.arch-ive.org/txst
  13. Psych! Going through old photos, found this 1975ish Texas Ave photo a friend took. At first glance, at least to me, looks like Jones Hall is under attack, but actually 19th century buildings being cleared away for progress. http://www225.pair.com/dhart007/misc/jones.JPG
  14. When I was downtown last week, it seemed all the Jones Plaza entrances were taped off. Now they seemed to be cleaning but I wasn't sure if this was just for cleaning, or for some other reason. Is something going on here? Will Party On The Plaza return or has it been swallowed by The Main Event?
  15. I have an idea: Jones High School should be converted into a magnet school complex. Its population would be redistributed between Worthing and Sterling High Schools. So, what does this mean? First let's look at the enrollment trends of the schools: * Jones: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...503/school.aspx * Worthing: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...619/school.aspx * Sterling: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...592/school.aspx And the attendance boundaries: * Jones: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolboundarymaps/JonesHS.pdf * Worthing: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolbounda.../WorthingHS.pdf * Sterling: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolbounda.../SterlingHS.pdf The reason why Jones is between Worthing and Sterling like that is because Jones and Sterling were White schools and Worthing was a Black school (i.e. segregation). So, what could we do with Jones? As a regular school it is in very close proximity to two others and seems kind of redundant. Ah, but the Jones campus and name could live on. HISD has Barbara Jordan, a vocational high school, on the north side. We could turn Jones into a vocational magnet, like Jordan, for students on the south side. That way, people do not have to travel all the way north. Also, because HISD now allows out district kids to go to HISD schools for free, we could see students from Alvin, Pearland, and/or Pasadena ISDs go to this school if HISD successfully markets the school. Jones could also have an all-girls magnet school; in Austin and Dallas there have been all-girls schools established. Houston could do the same. Or Houston could establish a military academy (Philadelphia and Chicago have military academy public schools). Depending on the size of the programs, Jones could have one or more of them.
