  1. I wanted to touch on a topic that has been weighing heavy on my mind recently, and I'd like to hear peoples thoughts. It's ironic that I discovered both these posts today. First, I read a somewhat encouraging article from Houston Public Media about a 5% decline in the homeless population from 2018 to 2019. You can read more in the article here: https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/city-of-houston/2019/05/15/333384/homelessness-down-5-in-houston/ . Obviously the stat on mental health spending was a little depressing, but to hear that Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties experienced a 54% decline in homelessness since 2011 was surprisingly positive news. But shortly after that I ventured over to the Houston Reddit to find a post entitled "Walked down Main St. from McGowen to Congress yesterday afternoon", which can be read here: Simply put, the post did not give me the warm fuzzies, especially since the area in question stretches all the way down Main Street. Sadly, I have seen the sights described in this thread, maybe not so much the smells, but definitely the sights. I've experienced the yelling, the drunkenness, and the tents/garbage lined up under the freeways. Downtown and Midtown are experiencing decent growth and development right now, yet the presence of the homeless continues to linger and in some cases grow. Certainly new development is helping clean some of these areas, but it seems as though these people simply relocate to other areas close by. For example, when I first moved to Houston in 2017, the entrance to 59 South from Richmond looked like any normal feeder. But for the past 6 months it has become overrun with garbage and filth, and this is right across from the Post 510 apartment complex. You can check the Yelp reviews for the place and see the problem is creating negative reviews from the tenants. This isn't the only complex experiencing the issue in the area, and I feel as though it will continue to keep people away from potentially relocating to Midtown and Downtown. But again, I want you guys to tell me your thoughts on the matter. What is the best course of action the city can take to curve this issue? Does anyone living in Midtown/Downtown echo these sentiments and have their own experiences to share? How will this impact the growth of Houston going forward?
  2. Has anyone else noticed the steep rise in gentrification taking place in suburban areas for the last decade or so? What do you think is an effective and plausible solution to this epidemic of rising affluence and real estate prices?
  3. Etro Lounge is leaving Montrose for Downtown in August. With the success of Anvil coupled with the parking situation on California St, will be interesting to see what happens to the old space. https://www.facebook.com/168343289321/posts/10156405183734322/
  4. A very interesting article by Bloomberg Business week about the national trend toward the 4+1 podium midrise model that has been exploding across the national, and of course, Houston. Thought this was a very fair article as well. This a great fact based straight forward article that's light on opinion. Both sides are taken into account from the business aspect, to code regulators, to concerned citizens over recent fires. I don't think this is going to slow down. With IBC updating again in 2021 to include timber skyscrapers and better regulations on the use of stick framing that will actually quicken its proliferation it will be interesting how much the city can densify with this continued model of development. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-02-13/why-america-s-new-apartment-buildings-all-look-the-same EDIT: This was posted here by accident. Please place this in the appropriate forum.
  5. Sometimes, to go forward, we have to go backward! I've been shooting Houston for years now, but recently I've made the jump into learning how to shoot medium format film. These are just some of the many photographs that I shot on my Yashica 635 6x6 camera--all developed by my hand in my makeshift darkroom at home.
  6. https://communityimpact.com/houston/katy/city-county/2018/06/21/fort-bend-county-official-etj-legislation-may-affect-up-to-300000-residents/ Also: https://communityimpact.com/houston/katy/city-county/2018/08/23/katy-state-representative-etj-bill-could-affect-1-8-million-houston-residents/ It's about time. Unincorporated Houston is very weird. I grew up in unincorporated Harris County and didn't realize how different it was until I moved to different places (DFW and now LA). There are definitely some things missing in the Houston metro that having more incorporated cities would solve. It's also about time all that money that's spent stays local to their respective areas. Maybe now there can be more planning and design to areas that are stuck in this weird limbo. I hope this moves forward. I think it can really benefit the Houston area overall. Houston still would have gigantic city limits that it already has a hard time maintaining. What does HAIF think?
  7. The goal of this thread is collect and house everyone's recommendations, tweaks, alternations, alternatives, etc... that they would like to see to Metro Next. The current draft which was exhibited this past summer is below: http://ridemetro.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=5&clip_id=1651 Metro's call for further input on the draft prior to an upcoming referendum in 2019: https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/2018/11/23/312741/metro-moves-to-the-next-phase-in-developing-a-regional-transit-plan/ Whether planned or in response to the recent political shift (or both). The winds are changing and with that is a chance to broaden and enrich Metro's vision for their overall goals (2040 vision) and what could be achievable in the upcoming referendum (2019 referendum vision). I'm curious what the community here thinks is possible. This is without thinking about budgets or costs since we don't know what that could be. Assume for right now you can get what you want (within logical reason of course). What are your ideas or proposals? Light rail? regional rail? BRT? Links to HSR? Connections to Airports? Do you have an idea for an entire system and how it would work or do you just have idea for a small portion? Is this for the upcoming referendum or for what you want in Houston by 2040? Its open forum. Lets try to not stomp on any ideas. Later, if this is a successful thread we can have a thread where we get more critical. I'm partly doing this to get more engagement on this forum, tbh, lately its felt a bit stagnant (with the disappearance of the reaction buttons, etc...).
  8. Hey everyone, hope you've all had a good Thanksgiving and year. Thought I'd share this video I put together recently of different shots around town taken by drone. I figured if any community would enjoy them it would be HAIF. Let me know what areas you'd like to see in the future as I plan on making this into an ongoing series! Bryan
  9. I remember one of the department stores in The Gulfgate Mall having a made of wood place where they hung blue jeans. I remember thinking how cool it was. It was during the 1970s. It really looked 70s style too. It kind of reminded me of something that came out of a television series or sitcom from the 1970s. I wish that was still there in The Gulfgate Mall. So many memories are not there anymore, how sad!

  12. So I am trying to find new spots in the Houston area to get great footage. I am tired of flying around the house. I have 2 recommendations. What are your favorites?? 1) Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve https://goo.gl/maps/PRHDi37czvT2 Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve 20215 Chasewood Park Dr, Houston, TX 77070 2) Bear Branch Reservoir https://goo.gl/maps/N64GDYPHmaG2 Dropped Pin
  13. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed fencing had gone up around the Shell station near the corner of N Durham Drive and N Loop West. Within a few days, equipment had been brought to the site and the station was demolished. I haven't had the chance to take any pictures of the activity, but they have removed almost all of the building above ground and are now working on removing the remaining structure underground. Does anyone know if there is a project scheduled to go up on this site? (If this topic has been touched upon in another thread, it would be great if someone could link it here.) Here is the site: https://goo.gl/maps/iCPmBW81wcq.
  14. So, after a very short time in Houston, it looks like El Pollo Loco is on the verge of being completely out of the Houston area. When I was trying to see what locations were left in Houston, I saw that El Pollo Loco was actually in the Houston area back in the 80s. http://articles.latimes.com/1985-03-10/business/fi-25958_1_el-pollo-loco Does anyone know where these 1980s locations were? Thanks.
  15. One of my favorite backdrops / photo spots is the Sabine Street Bridge...I've shot a few videos there and taken some pics there as well because I like the background image. Even used this shot as a header image on my site. Houston has to have one of the best skylines in the US (and probably the most overlooked). And I've always been a fan of the symbolism imposed by bridges so any time I can combine our skyline with a great bridge, I love it. I like how it has some great color contrasts with the green trees and the urban-esque (is that a word) skyline. It's just a great spot for photos and videos (except for the passing car noise). What other bridges are picturesque in Houston? I need more photo locations.
  16. A few cool things I've seen coming out of Houston lately. I'm only posting start-ups that are non oil & gas related. Electric car maker Lumen Motors probably caught me eye the most, I guess this would be the first automobile company to be founded in Houston or Texas as a whole. The car is expected to be delivering its first pre-orders in late 2017 going into early 2018. They are also planning on creating 250 jobs as of now. Lumen Motors website: http://www.lumenmotors.com/ Another start-up is creating a vest that will help you expand your perception. Neosensory will help train your brain in developing new senses in sound, infrared vision, vr gaming, stock market data, etc. Neosensory website: https://neosensory.com/ Macrofab specializes in manufacturing and assembling PCBs and electronic devices. They helped Neosensory with building their vest. Macrofab's website: https://macrofab.com/work/
  17. First off, Im not supposed to let this out....I promised my source. But after hearing this news, I felt compelled to post it here, seeing as this forum isnt as well known, I feel safe to post it here. But most importantly, Im all for downtown development and this I feel is a huge loss for the Downtown nightlife/club scene. I feel when I post what I know, most will take me seriously and understand my point of view and offer up ther own insightfull analysis or logical opinion. In the club promoting industry, the time from January to Spring Break is usually a dry time, when club's see their least business. Reasons vary from cold weather, to school starting back up, to the crowd being simply partied out from the holidays. Of late, Things have been slowing and crowds have been thining downtown. The fear is that alot of smaller downtown clubs will not make it to see Spring Break, something my trusted source ominously confirmed. And when a big Club venue downtown goes down this soon, it will cause gitters downtown for other samller venues, which might cause a few to pull the trigger and pull out of downtown. The big club I speak of going down is MBar. This is sad for me since majority of my friends work here. It wasnt just a club for me, It was more like going to a frat party and socializing. For the last few years of my life, Ive had some memoriable times here. This place means alot to me and Im truly sadden to hear of its impending demise. From what Ive been told, it will close before Janurary is out. In fact, Ive even been told that last Saturday night was its Final Night. For Downtown, This means no more MilkShake nights on Thursday nights, which was a huge "celebrity-filled" draw 4 years strong. The same could be said for Saturday's as well. When a smaller venue like Dean's across the street sees another larger neighbor close its doors (Opus close by as well) it does not bode well for the downtown scene. Can Downtown's nightlife scene survive this dry time? From what I hear, there are going to be alot of vacancies opening up soon where clubs used to be.
  18. We are Gay couple moving from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Houston. We have 3 boys (4-5-8 years old) two are black. I'm Native American and my husband is European. What do you all think about The Woodlands & Spring Texas for a place to buy a home and settle down? Do you all think that those two areas are nice, safe or open minded and tolerant? ---Travis & Stephen travisbernard.hunt@gmail.com
  19. I know this probably asked a lot, but that makes this more necessary, plus I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I am looking for a spot to get a shot of the Houston skyline, but from the east, one that captures St. Joseph's in the shot. I want one where it's safe to shoot, or at least somewhat safe, where I don't have to worry too much about having a decent camera. I know everyone says to shoot from the opposite side, like where Eleanor Tinsley park is, but I personally want one with a shot of the hospital in it. Also, maybe one that doesn't have too much rundown scenery around it. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
  20. In the latest round of Sears that are closing, Sears' parent company, Sears Holdings, has announced that the Baybrook store is next on the chopping block (while the Mall of the Mainland location continues to survive). The Sears at Baybrook has been there in its current location since the mall opened in 1978. Despite never going to Sears, it's still kinda sad. Does anyone have memories of this Sears? Supposedly there used to be a McDonald's inside, but I wasn't sure if it was true.
  21. Hey everyone. Still working on my Graduate Thesis and need some input via interview/survey. Tried posting this on r/Houston to get more people involved, but the subreddit sucks because anytime I post it auto removes it classifying it as spam! (seriously?) So thought I post this in a more reliable place...here. Since I'm not able to travel back home to conduct this survey/interview with people from the area I'm researching I was wondering if people within this community could possibly help. I would greatly appreciate it! You don't have to answer all the questions if you don't feel comfortable answering them. I would also like a picture if you can provide one. My focus area and site I'm analyzing is also in the link. I'm primarily looking at an area of Midtown/Downtown near I-45 (Pierce Elevated). Please try not to think to much while taking the interview. I want whatever comes first to your mind. I want honest answers. Its important for my research. At the end of my Thesis I'll link to it here in this subreddit and will be sure to give credit to those whom I use for my research. Here is a link to the interview: http://i.imgur.com/hnHoyUZ.jpg You can email me your interview and picture to this email address: derluminare@gmail.com Please comment if you have any questions or critiques.

  23. KVVV-LD (KVVV 15.3) recently unveiled in July of 2016 "Howdy Philippines" on Pinoy Houston TV. If anyone has seen the show, tell me what y'all think ? This is Episode 34: with Sheryn Regis & Cheryl Piccio hosting.
  24. Does anyone have any information or anecdotes about Houstonian William "Bill" Newkirk? He was the talent booker for the Tidelands Club in the 1960s. Newkirk was known and respected in national entertainment circles and was written up in Billboard several times during that era. He also was a Houston sportscaster and was the pressbox game announcer at Rice Stadium for Owl football games in the mid-60s. I believe he announced the first televised Houston baseball game (from Buff Stadium) in 1949. The Newkirks were family friends and I went to school with his son. I remember meeting Totie Fields at their house when she came to Houston to play the Tidelands. As best I as I can recall Newkirk divorced his wife (maiden name Elledge?) and moved to Los Angeles in the early 70s... Anyone familiar with him?
  25. Found this on MCS Architects page, not sure if its old but the website holds current development on its page. *Pops up under construction slides* http://www.mcshouston.com/portfolio/
