  1. Our fair city is 2nd only to NYC in Fortune 500 companies 2006 Listings
  2. A very interesting article by Bloomberg Business week about the national trend toward the 4+1 podium midrise model that has been exploding across the national, and of course, Houston. Thought this was a very fair article as well. This a great fact based straight forward article that's light on opinion. Both sides are taken into account from the business aspect, to code regulators, to concerned citizens over recent fires. I don't think this is going to slow down. With IBC updating again in 2021 to include timber skyscrapers and better regulations on the use of stick framing that will actually q
  3. I was looking at Google Maps at the area around the Palladium Theater and along Grand Parkway and noticed that when I am zoomed in sufficiently on "map" mode, the thumbnail for "earth" mode (which is satellite imagery) on the bottom left corner of my screen shows a more updated satellite imagery than whats shown when I actually click the "earth" button. Both Google Earth and Google Maps with Satellite Imagery show imagery dated October 2012 for most of this area. Looking at the imagery in the thumbnail, it looks to be from October 2013 (or so I assume based on various developments not being
  4. So I am trying to find new spots in the Houston area to get great footage. I am tired of flying around the house. I have 2 recommendations. What are your favorites?? 1) Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve https://goo.gl/maps/PRHDi37czvT2 Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve 20215 Chasewood Park Dr, Houston, TX 77070 2) Bear Branch Reservoir https://goo.gl/maps/N64GDYPHmaG2 Dropped Pin
  5. Unless all of y'all have been living under rocks, there has been increase of violent crime impacting the Lone Star State's largest city including a rising murder rate inside the City of Houston due to what Houston Crime Stopper's victim advocate Andy Kahn calls "bond pandemic". https://abc13.com/houston-murder-rate-homicide-hpd-update-8121534/ https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/southcentral/2020/12/09/593466.htm https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/texas-news/houston-authorities-target-rise-in-road-rage-amid-pandemic/2500231/ https://www.theblaze
  6. Following the murder of George Floyd, peaceful protests took place through the afternoon and evening yesterday. Unfortunately, as the night went on, it appears some people took advantage of the situation and vandalized some areas of downtown. See the images and videos from instagram below: These are sensitive times, and I don't mean to send any negative messages in posting these images. To me these actions seem to take on a more selfish nature than in support of any just cause, and it saddens me to think that anyone would believe that this dest
  7. I wanted to touch on a topic that has been weighing heavy on my mind recently, and I'd like to hear peoples thoughts. It's ironic that I discovered both these posts today. First, I read a somewhat encouraging article from Houston Public Media about a 5% decline in the homeless population from 2018 to 2019. You can read more in the article here: https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/city-of-houston/2019/05/15/333384/homelessness-down-5-in-houston/ . Obviously the stat on mental health spending was a little depressing, but to hear that Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery cou
  8. Hey everyone, hope you've all had a good Thanksgiving and year. Thought I'd share this video I put together recently of different shots around town taken by drone. I figured if any community would enjoy them it would be HAIF. Let me know what areas you'd like to see in the future as I plan on making this into an ongoing series! Bryan
  9. Aeros... Aeros not even a big league hockey team. Houston always get talked about, not bad, but badly. The air pollution, the traffic, bad this, and bad that. Houston never do nothing big. I say it's a death cruse. Poor Houston, but I'm a houstonain, and somewhat I love Houston. Everytime Houston do things they fail at it.
  10. The city of Houston has moved from BETA(+) to ALPHA(-) according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC). That's 6 spots higher to Number 35 in the World. ALPHA Class cities are defined as; cities that are highly integrated areas, filling advanced service needs. The index ranks cities’ current performance based on a number of metrics, including business activity, human capital, information exchange, political engagement and cultural experience. Houston has seen close to 700 different announcements in the region over the last 10 years of foreign firms saying they are
  11. Interesting report. Found this from an article on CityLab: https://www.citylab.com/life/2019/06/apartments-for-rent-where-to-move-top-cities-list-map-data/591151/ Its not very in-depth reporting on a very thorough and data rich report. With that being said its an interesting starting point if one is interested in where people are going. Thats why I'll link the actual report along with this. Check out Houston: https://www.apartmentlist.com/rentonomics/apartment-list-renter-migration-report-2019q2/ Its also not surprising where people are going. Ma
  12. Has anyone else noticed the steep rise in gentrification taking place in suburban areas for the last decade or so? What do you think is an effective and plausible solution to this epidemic of rising affluence and real estate prices?
  13. Hello, It's been a long time since I posted on HAIF, but i have what might seem like a silly question, so i apologize in advance. I was involved in a discussion with a lady about Main Street and if the entire stretch of Main, all the way until where it becomes a freeway, all the way past the beltway is all the same (MAIN). Her claim was that the Main st in Stafford is a different Main that runs through the downtown core of Houston, even though it is technically the same roadway. My question is: Is it still Main St south past 610? Because I noticed that once
  14. Sometimes, to go forward, we have to go backward! I've been shooting Houston for years now, but recently I've made the jump into learning how to shoot medium format film. These are just some of the many photographs that I shot on my Yashica 635 6x6 camera--all developed by my hand in my makeshift darkroom at home.
  15. I remember one of the department stores in The Gulfgate Mall having a made of wood place where they hung blue jeans. I remember thinking how cool it was. It was during the 1970s. It really looked 70s style too. It kind of reminded me of something that came out of a television series or sitcom from the 1970s. I wish that was still there in The Gulfgate Mall. So many memories are not there anymore, how sad!

Block in between YMCA & 800 Bell. Noticed this lot was fenced off this afternoon, along Travis, Bell, and Peace. No parking here either. Anyone know what’s up?
  17. So, after a very short time in Houston, it looks like El Pollo Loco is on the verge of being completely out of the Houston area. When I was trying to see what locations were left in Houston, I saw that El Pollo Loco was actually in the Houston area back in the 80s. http://articles.latimes.com/1985-03-10/business/fi-25958_1_el-pollo-loco Does anyone know where these 1980s locations were? Thanks.
  18. One of my favorite backdrops / photo spots is the Sabine Street Bridge...I've shot a few videos there and taken some pics there as well because I like the background image. Even used this shot as a header image on my site. Houston has to have one of the best skylines in the US (and probably the most overlooked). And I've always been a fan of the symbolism imposed by bridges so any time I can combine our skyline with a great bridge, I love it. I like how it has some great color contrasts with the green trees and the urban-esque (is that a word) skyline. It's just a great spot for photos and vid
  19. A few cool things I've seen coming out of Houston lately. I'm only posting start-ups that are non oil & gas related. Electric car maker Lumen Motors probably caught me eye the most, I guess this would be the first automobile company to be founded in Houston or Texas as a whole. The car is expected to be delivering its first pre-orders in late 2017 going into early 2018. They are also planning on creating 250 jobs as of now. Lumen Motors website: http://www.lumenmotors.com/ Another start-up is creating a vest that will help you expand your percep
  20. First off, Im not supposed to let this out....I promised my source. But after hearing this news, I felt compelled to post it here, seeing as this forum isnt as well known, I feel safe to post it here. But most importantly, Im all for downtown development and this I feel is a huge loss for the Downtown nightlife/club scene. I feel when I post what I know, most will take me seriously and understand my point of view and offer up ther own insightfull analysis or logical opinion. In the club promoting industry, the time from January to Spring Break is usually a dry time, when club's
  21. We are Gay couple moving from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Houston. We have 3 boys (4-5-8 years old) two are black. I'm Native American and my husband is European. What do you all think about The Woodlands & Spring Texas for a place to buy a home and settle down? Do you all think that those two areas are nice, safe or open minded and tolerant? ---Travis & Stephen travisbernard.hunt@gmail.com
  22. I'd read Kathryn Casey's Deliver Us: Three Decades of Murder and Redemption in the Infamous I-45/Texas Killing Fields a few years ago, particularly interested in the case of Kim Pitchford who was abducted January 3, 1973 from my alma mater, Dobie High School. Just a heads-up if you've followed any of these unsolved murders along I-45 during the early 70s, A&E is premiering a series on the man who has confessed to eleven of them. It's prompted the opening of two of the cold cases. The series starts this Thursday night if you're interested. http://www.ae
  23. I know this probably asked a lot, but that makes this more necessary, plus I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I am looking for a spot to get a shot of the Houston skyline, but from the east, one that captures St. Joseph's in the shot. I want one where it's safe to shoot, or at least somewhat safe, where I don't have to worry too much about having a decent camera. I know everyone says to shoot from the opposite side, like where Eleanor Tinsley park is, but I personally want one with a shot of the hospital in it. Also, maybe one that doesn't have too much rundown scenery around it. If an
  24. Hey everyone. Still working on my Graduate Thesis and need some input via interview/survey. Tried posting this on r/Houston to get more people involved, but the subreddit sucks because anytime I post it auto removes it classifying it as spam! (seriously?) So thought I post this in a more reliable place...here. Since I'm not able to travel back home to conduct this survey/interview with people from the area I'm researching I was wondering if people within this community could possibly help. I would greatly appreciate it! You don't have to answer all the
