  5. Good afternoon everyone. Hoping all of you are staying safe out there with this international pandemic, etc.,, Anyway, here are some videos for nostalgia & everyone to reminisce the Good Ole Days: Metromedia (later Fox 26) 26 KRIV-TV Houston from 1983: Metromedia 26 Program Line-up (either Spring or Summer 1983): Notice the studio set behind Ginger Casey during what was then Metromedia 26 newscast from 1983. (Sports Update with Dave Sheehan from 1983) Metromedia 26 Promo from 1983: Let me know what y'all think of these archived videos from the good ole days of Houston TV News.
  6. Tom Koch is retiring from Ch. 13 KTRK-TV Houston after 39 years with the ABC O&O Station he announced at the end of yesterday's weekday morning newscast. His final newscast will be on May 28th. "For nearly 40 years, I've been honored & humbled that so many people welcomed me into their homes every day," Koch said in a statement emailed to mikemcguff.com. "It's been a dream come true for a small-town Wisconsin kid to be part of this incredible station & truly great city of Houston. But I've decided it's time to step aside, turn off that early morning alarm & wake up to a new adventure." The station tells Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com the week of May 24th, will be featuring an on-air celebration featuring Koch & his many achievements will begin, with a final goodbye on May 28th, 2021. Here are some videos of Koch's time with Ch. 13 over the years: Weekday morning newscast from March 6th, 1990. February 2nd, 1991.
  7. Yesterday, Weekday Traffic Anchor Katherine Whaley left Ch. 13 to spend time with her family. But something tells me we'll see her back on TV in a few years. With longtime Weekday Morning Anchor Tom Koch retiring after nearly 40 years on May 28th, it appears the weekday morning newscast will be looking different with possible more changes on the horizon: https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2021/03/katherine-whaley-leaves-abc13-ktrk.html?m=1 Whaley's Instagram message to her followers on her decision to leave the ABC O&O Station: https://www.instagram.com/p/CM1yHFhpzMp/ https://www.facebook.com/photo?fibd=293015292188645&set=a.292306375542870 https://www.facebook.com/KatherineABC13 Chelsey Hernandez, who does the "Stretch Your Dollar" segments & recently moved to the weekday afternoons in 2019, has left the ABC O&O Station as well, plus her biography was taken off the station's website & Hernandez removed all mentions of Ch. 13 from her Social Media accounts: https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2021/03/chelsey-hernandez-leaves-abc13-ktrk.html Any thoughts on the changes going on at Ch. 13 ? Big question is whether we'll see more departures down the road ?
  8. Sad news for viewers of CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston. Former CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston reporter John "Rucks" Russell has passed away at the age of 55 yesterday. Russell's former colleague, former CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston reporter & political analyst Doug Miller received the news from Russell's wife. On Miller's Facebook page, Miller posted a nice tribute for Russell: https://www.facebook.com/doug.miller.75033149/posts/10224020654571793 Russell worked at CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston from 2006 to 2017, when he left the station to work as the Communications Director for US Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) in Washington, DC; he then became the Senior Media & Communications Specialist HHS Office of Minority Health & also last worked as Chief of Staff/Communications Director for Houston City Council. Prior to KHOU-TV, Russell worked for WNCN-TV Raleigh, NC., WRIC-TV Central Virginia as well as stops in Washington, DC., Orlando, FL & Roanoke, VA. He graduated from Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ & studied abroad in Besancon, France. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2021/05/rucks-russell-has-passed-away.html
  9. Just found out NBC 2 Weekday Morning Anchor Taniya Wright is no longer with the station after just 9 months (she joined in August of 2019). According to multiple sources, no other information is available yet. Wright anchored the weekday morning & midday newscasts until today. No information about her future plans were available or disclosed. I should note Wright was on today's morning newscast earlier today, but not in the midday newscast for some reason. Thoughts on Wright's departure from NBC 2 & the revolving door at the station ? https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2020/04/taniya-wright-leaves-kprc-2.html?m=1 https://www.facebook.com/pg/kprc2taniya/ https://www.facebook.com/TaniyaWright /

Fox 26 5:00 PM Anchor Rashi Vats has been working her way through the Lone Star State's TV markets & Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com has a list of achievements on Vats' journalism career over the years: She's also married to CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston Sports Reporter Daniel Gotera as well as a graduate of Texas Christian University. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2020/09/rashi-vats-5pm-anchor-fox26.html https://www.facebook.com/RashiVatsFOX26/
  11. Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com is reporting that after 22 years with the ABC O&O Station, sports anchor Bob Slovak (whom I strongly felt was wrongly passed over for the Sports Director job a few years back) is leaving Ch. 13 KTRK-TV Houston's sports department after more than two decades. Slovak joined Ch. 13 in 1998 as the sports reporter alongside longtime Houston sports anchors Tim Melton & the late Bob Allen. In 2013, when Melton suffered a stroke & had to retire from the TV biz, Slovak moved from sports reporter to weekend sports anchor. Before coming to Ch. 13, Slovak worked at KNXV-TV Phoenix, AZ, KOTV-TV Tulsa, OK, KFDM-TV Beaumont, TX & KTEN-TV Ada, OK. Native of Dallas, Slovak graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Slovak's final day with Ch. 13 is going to be in a few weeks, so stay tuned for when that occurs.

"Deborah is an icon of broadcasting & a true journalist Houstonians will always remember," News Director Rehan Aslam said in an internal memo obtained by mikemcguff.com. "We wanted to thank Deborah for her countless stories that made such an impact on thousands & thousands of people. She served our city & our communities with grace & professionalism." The memo said Wrigley started with the station 42 years ago. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2020/08/deborah-wrigley-to-leave-abc13-ktrk.html Let me know your thoughts on Wrigley's legacy with Ch. 13 & how she'll be remembered.
  13. Sad news from the Ch. 13 Eyewitness News family. Photojournalist Willie Dixon died last night at the age of 52. He joined the ABC O&O station in 2006 from WFTV in Orlando, FL. Dixon was also a graduate of Alabama State University, where he played trombone in the ASU Hornet Marching Band. https://abc13.com/society/remembering-abc13-photojournalist-willie-dixon/6130883/ https://www.insragram.com/p/B_dMdmPjNkA/

  15. In case anybody had been living under a rock, then-NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston Reporter Sophia Beausoleil had left the Houston NBC Station this month, along with her baby son having left for Dallas. where her husband is a medical resident. She also announced she'll be working for NBC 5 KXAS-TV Dallas. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2020/01/sophia-beausoleil-leaves-kprc-2.html

  18. Good afternoon HAIF bloggers. Unless some of y'all have been living under a rock or a secret beach retreat in the West Coast, Ch. 13 brought in Brheanna Berry to join the ABC O&O Station back in early February. Plus Berry worked with KELO-TV Sioux Falls, SD as the Morning Anchor/Reporter from March 2016 to 2017; she was also the station's heathbeat reporter.
