  1. Who saw this one coming ? After 12 1/2 years with the station, FOX 26 Evening Anchor Melinda Spaulding has announced she'll be leaving. In her Facebook page, Spaulding said she wants to spend more time with her husband & kids & doesn't want to miss another moment. https://www.facebook.com/melindaspauldingfox26/ Thoughts from anyone on Spaulding leaving FOX 26 ?
  2. Courtney Fischer has joined Ch. 13 as a reporter from Pittsburgh, PA's Action News WTAE-TV & also worked with WLEX Lexington, KY & WEHT-TV Evansville, IND., Plus, she's also an alumnus of DePaul University & native of Chicago, IL. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/08/courtney-fischer-joins-ktrk-abc13.html
  3. Looks like a former NFL cheerleader, who recently left those cheerleading gigs for the TV studios in recent years, has returned back to the Bayou City! http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/06/cathy-hernandez-joins-kprc-2.html It's on a temporary basis!
  4. Ladies & Gentlemen, Houston TV viewers will be losing Karla Barguiarena AGAIN! According to Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com, Barguiarena has been working with the ABC O&O station since 2013. Since her husband, former KHOU-TV CBS 11 news director Keith Connors, got a job earlier this year at WTNH in New Haven, CT, it was quite obvious Barguiarena's days in Houston were pretty much over. Before returning to Houston, she had worked as a media relations expert for Angie's List. She also worked with KHOU-TV CBS 11 in the mid-to-late 2000s including Telemundo Houston KTMD for 5 years. She'll be missed by many TV viewers in Houston! http://www.facebook.com/ABC13KarlaBarguiarena?fref=nf http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/06/karla-barguiarena-exits-abc-13-ktrk.html
  5. This development completely took me by surprise... Fox 26 KRIV-TV news reporter Kristine Galvan has left the station after 10 years. On Tuesday, in her personal Facebook page, Galvan explained why she's leaving Fox 26: "As some of y'all know, I had a right knee scope in January to fix a badly torn meniscus, medial ligament tear & lateral ligament tear. 'On the job' recovery was difficult-especially during cold snaps & the Houston rodeo." But the most interesting part of the story is where Galvan mentioned the changing state of TV news industry, particularly the rise of multimedia journalists. In Houston, they've hired very few in the past year. http://www.chron.com/entertainment/celebrities/article/Longtime-Fox-26-reporter-calls-it-quits-cites-6305244.php https://www.facebook.com/KristineGalvan For any Fox 26 viewers out there, want to hear your reaction on Galvan's departure from Fox 26 after a decade! Later this month, she'll turn 37 years-old!

  7. Question for everyone here: I've read numerous stories on GMs being hostile to employees of news stations over the years, but the question is Fox 26 GM D'Art Bebel the most hostile & difficult person to work with? A.) YES B.) NO C.) TBD
  8. First, we've seen Phillip Mena leaving KPRC-TV NBC 2 for ABC News & Jeremy Diesel leaving KHOU-TV CBS 11 for the private sector. Now Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com has reported that Fox 26 reporter Maria Corrales is OUT at Fox 26 after only just 1 year with the station. McGuff also reported that Corrales' bio has been wiped clean from the Fox 26 website, her station's Facebook page deleted. Plus, there's no recent activity going on with her Twitter account. She joined Fox 26 in February 2014 after more than 8 years with Univision 45 KXLN-TV, where she worked both as a reporter & producer. Before that, she also worked as a Media Specialist/Bilingual Spokesperson for Harris County's Public Health & Environmental Services in Houston; she interned both with Telemundo 48 KTMD-TV & Ch. 13 KTRK-TV (ABC). She's also a Houston native & graduated from both Milby High School & the University of Houston. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/04/maria-corrales-gone-from-fox-26-kriv.html Reaction on Corrales' exit from Fox 26 after just 1 year ?
  9. Looking like KPRC-TV's exodus continues. Weekend co-anchor Phillip Mena is leaving KPRC-TV after 3 years with the station & he's going to be working for ABC News. He starts his new job on May 4th. Reaction of Mena leaving KPRC-TV & joining ABC News? http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/04/phillip-mena-leaves-kprc-for-abc-news.html?m=1 http://deadline.com/2015/04/phillip-mena-abc-news-hire-1201410350 http://www.click2houston.com/

  12. Ladies & Gentlemen, we've got a new weather anchor for the weekend morning newscasts at Fox 26 KRIV-TV Houston. Lindsey Day was hired by the station in helping starting your day on the station's weekend morning newscasts. She replaces Caitlin Espinosa, who left Fox 26 for health reasons and recently started her own YouTube channel earlier this year. Day comes from KOZL-TV Springfield, MO. Previously, she worked with WCTV-TV Tallahassee, FL. Her 1st day with Fox 26 on March 16th! http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/03/lindsey-day-joins-fox-26-kriv.html?m=1 http://www.myfoxhouston.com/ Reaction of Day joining the Fox 26 weather anchor team?
  13. KPRC viewer emails are flying into Mike McGuff's inbox. Why ? The "KPRC Local 2" tagline that's been effect for years seems to be going away in favor of the "KPRC 2 News" or "KPRC 2 News" taglines depending on which anchor you're watching. Social media wise, the station is slowly replacing the "local" word. The NBC affiliate's Facebook page name was also switched to "KPRC 2" this afternoon, however the talent pages all say KPRC Local 2 on them still. Same for the station's Twitter account. That's going to be a fun project for someone to go in & making all of those changes! http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/01/kprc-2-changes-names-drops-local.html?m=1 Any reaction to the new developments?
  14. According to mikemcguff.com, Fox 26 weekend morning meteorologist Caitlin Espinosa is leaving the green screen for good & calling it a TV career after 8 years. "The past 6 months I have been dealing with personal health issues, & I took it as a sign to leave the TV industry," Espinosa told mikemcguff.com. "My health is good now but I need a job with fewer environmental stresses. The cold studio, long unusual hours really made things worse for me." Don't expect any goodbye videos for Espinosa just yet. She said that she signed a contract extension with Fox 26 to helping out until the station finds a replacement. McGuff heard other Houston weather people are interested in her job. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/01/caitlin-espinosa-to-leave-fox-26-kriv-youtube.html?m=1 http://www.myfoxhouston.com/

  16. Ladies & Gentlemen, Ch. 13 has FINALLY got a replacement for Samica Knight (who's now in the weekday morning newscasts with Tom Koch). Chauncy Glover from WDIV-TV Detroit, MI, will be heading to the Bayou City & becoming Ch. 13's weekend morning co-anchor with Elisa Rivas. This slot has been open since Knight has already replaced Sharron Melton on the Disney/ABC Television Group station's morning weekday newscasts. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/01/chauncy-glover-ktrk-abc13.html?m=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK1rmpEQjLg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eLyxvEqEgA Any reaction on Glover joining Ch. 13's weekend morning newscasts ?
  17. KENZI-TV News 9 chief meteorologist Justin Stapleton is coming to KPRC-TV the station has confirmed to mikemcguff.com. "I've always had a fascination with hurricanes & tropical storms," Stapleton told mikemcguff.com. "That's one of the draws to KPRC & Houston, an opportunity to forecast storms when they get into the Gulf & be out in the field reporting when severe weather hits. More importantly, a chance to learn from some amazing seasoned Mets like Frank & the rest of the team. Also to get a chance to learn from a former NHC director, Dr. Read, is an incredible bonus." http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/12/justin-stapleton-joins-kprc-2-weather.html?m=1 Reaction from anyone on Stapleton joining the KPRC-TV weather team?
  18. Ch. 13 is beefing back up its management ranks after tumultuous few months, but the Disney/ABC Television Group is thinking a bit outside the box with its new troops. Last summer, McGuff Blog had started sending out breaking news alerts non-stop when news director Dave Strickland resigned, executive producer Jerry Vazquez left for the position of KTMD-TV news director chair & assistant news director/former reporter Don Kobos retired. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/12/ktrk-abc13-hires-two-assistant-news-directors.html?m=1 Any thoughts on the new hirings @ Ch. 13 ?
  19. Courtney Zavala, who's been with KPRC-TV since 2003 over the past 11 years is leaving the NBC station & the news business for good. 20. Looks like KPRC-TV is getting more new blood at the NBC O&O station. Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com reported that Anoushah Rasta is joining KPRC-TV as a reporter. Today was her first day on KPRC, she was previously the weekend anchor for KTSM-TV Ch. 9 El Paso. She worked at KTSM for 2 years, where she started as a reporter/multimedia journalist and fill-in anchor. She was promoted to the weekend anchor position last December. Before the Lone Star State, Rasta had worked for KABC-TV (ABC 7) Los Angeles, CA., as a news assistant, apprentice and freelance traffic producer. While at the Disney/ABC Television Group station, she was on the production team for the 84th Academy Awards & Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2012. Rasta is a graduate of the University of California-Los Angeles and a Southern California native. Any thoughts on Rasta joining KPRC-TV ? http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/10/anoushah-rasta-joins-kprc-2.html
  21. In trying to keep up with Ch. 13's consumer reporting and other stations doing the same, KHOU-TV CBS 11 is giving the consumer reporting gig to reporter Tiffany Craig, who starts the job this month. Executive news director Phil Bruce on Craig's new position: "Tiffany has done great work for us as a general assignments reporter, but she's already an old hand at consumer investigative reporting--that was Tiffany's assignment in Mobile before she came here and she did some award winning work," Bruce said in an internal station memo. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/10/khou-11-tiffany-craig-consumer-reporter.html Reaction from anyone on the new opportunity for Craig ?
  22. Kaitlin McCulley recently joined Ch. 13 as a news reporter last week from WIAT-TV 42 of Birmingham, Alabama, where she worked as an MMJ/reporter since 2011. Before that, she had interned at WWSB-TV Tampa, FL and Morning Joe of MSNBC in 2009. What are your thoughts on McCulley joining the "13 Eyewitness News" team ? http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/09/kaitlin-mcculley-joins-ktrk-13.html
  23. Ch. 13's first virtual set with the downtown skyline was unveiled sometime during the summer of 1982 and here's an example of it from their 6pm newscast from December 22, 1982: Dave Ward, Marvin Zindler (RIP), Tim Melton (who subbed in for Bob Allen that night), Ed Brandon and Van Hackett are included in this photograph. I know ChannelTwoNews has lots of old VHS tapes being uploaded on his YouTube page with news clips, promos, briefs of Ch. 13 during the late 1970s and early 1980s. If anyone has any more info on Ch. 13's first virtual set from 1982, let me know.
  24. Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com and other media reports confirm that after 32 years with Ch. 13 and 40 years in the business, assistant news director Don Kobos is retiring from the Houston ABC O&O station multiple sources have told McGuff. Houston TV viewers will recognize Kobos, who joined Ch. 13 in 1982 as a reporter and often reported on Live at Five or the weeknight newscasts for example. He started out as an investigative reporter and eventually covered everything from politics, education to general assignments. Following the 2001 inauguration of George W. Bush as our 43rd President on January 20, 2001, Kobos went on to become assistant news director. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/09/don-kobos-retires-from-ktrk-abc13.html http://www.ktrk.com/ Reaction on Kobos' retirement ? Video on some of Kobos' reporting days on Ch. 13 *HFD Fire report from November or December of 1988 because I've noticed that they didn't have Ed Brandon's picture in this open in their Live at Five newscast. December 16, 1988 10pm newscast
  25. Ladies and gentlemen, Ch. 13 has a new news director. Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com reported that the Houston ABC O&O station has tapped Wendy Granato as the station's new top boss. Making her the station's first female news director in Ch. 13's history. If her name sounds familiar, her husband is longtime sports radio talker John Granato (now 1560 KGOW; formerly 610 KILT, Houston Texans sideline reporter and KNWS 51). She's an LSU alumnus. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/09/wendy-granato-ktrk-abc13-news-director.html http://www.ktrk.com/ Reaction to the new hiring of Ch. 13's new news director ?
