  1. In 1892, Agnes Perry told Kezia Payne DePelchin she could use her home as a Faith Home for the unfortunate children and orphans. This is where it all began! DePelchin Children's Center is still operating today, some 132-years after the founding. Photos of the historic mansion/house.
  2. The George Hermann Estate put out a short documentary about him. Within the documentary there was a depiction of the 2-story family home in downtown Houston. The house (mansion) was located 122 Smith Street. I believe the drawing/painting is accurate. They accurately depicted Hermann Hospital in the same video. Very cool history here. This would have been in 1843. 181 years ago! Now there is a city park where the house once stood. Hermann Square Park is located at 900 Bagby Street. Hermann Hospital:
  3. George R. Brown's River Oaks house was built in 1933 and located at 3363 Inwood Drive. Designed by J.T. Rather Jr. of Staub & Rather.
  4. In 1917, Ross Sterling was building a mansion in Montrose located at 4410 Rossmoyne Street (later Yoakum Boulevard.) Mike and Ima Hogg needed a place to live while their Bayou Bend estate was being built. Ross Sterling leased the property to the Hoggs for a few years. When Mike Hogg left the property for Bayou Bend, another oilman moved in. Walter Benona Sharp. In 1902, Sharp, Ed Prather, and Howard Hughes Sr., founded the Moonshine Oil Company. University of Saint Thomas owned the property for decades up until demolition. The building had numerous names, including Second Women's Residence, and Spiritual Hall. Photos of the old mansion. Sadly was demolished for a few 3-story luxury town homes.
  5. Does any of the HAIF Historians have a photo of the old Henry MacGregor house located in 3530 Fannin Street? The home was built in the 1920s. All I could find on Google Earth from 1944. I'd love to see an actual picture if anyone comes across it.
  6. One of the founders of the Anderson, Clayton and Co. was William Clayton who lived in River Oaks. Legal says, this was the first house built in River Oaks at 3376 Inwood Drive. Designed by Briscoe & Dixon in 1924.
  7. Alfred C. Finn designed the residence of Walter Fondren located at 3410 Montrose Boulevard. Designed in the 1920s. Now a Hines skyscraper towers over the old mansion.
  8. The infamous Ben Taub lived in downtown in 1909. He lived at 1302 Main Street on the corner in a 2-story brick home.
  9. This awesome mansion built in 1872 for Thomas House Jr., was designed by the infamous George Dicky. The residence was located at 1010 Louisiana St.
  10. I was invited to view the Frank Bering Mansion 3400 Fannin Recently purchased by Triinity Episcopal Church. The interior is fairly remarkable, considering it has been retail since at least 1979.
  11. Ernest Bel Fay lived next to his brother Ernest Fay. In the 1920s/1930s they both an 18-acre plot in the Uptown/Memorial area located at 105 North Post Oak Road. Decades later, his house now serves as one of the buildings on The Fay School campus. The "star architect" John F. Staub designed the home. https://www.thefayschool.org/ Here's a photo of the old house back in the 1930s.
  12. John F. Staub designed the house for Hugh Roy Cullen which was located at 1620 River Oaks Blvd.
  13. Finally found a good picture of the Albert Bel Fay house located at 99 North Post Oak Lane. The house was built alongside his brother's mansion, Ernest Bel Fay which is located at 105 North Post Oak Lane. In the 1930s, brothers A.B Fay acquired 8.29 acres while E.B. Fay's site was 7.26-ares. John F. Staub was the architect for both homes. Ernest Fay was a lumberman, while Albert was an oilman. Aerial photograph of both homes. Albert's home was situated on top.
  14. Came across the William Stamps Farish II mansion. I couldn't find an exact address but the photograph was taken in 1928. Any help with this one? I'd assume somewhere in River Oaks or Memorial. Maybe on Lazy Lane? Probably designed by John F. Staub? The mansion looks huge!
  15. Located in Downtown and built in 1854, the William Davis Cleveland residence was a simpler home. Still beautiful with those long columns. William Cleveland was the founder and owner of the business WM. D. Cleveland & Co.
  16. In 1879, William Joseph Settegast (W.J. Settegast) lived at 2218 Sherman Street. Now Valentine Street. Just an amazing house! Would love to know the architect.
  17. Built in 1907, the Wiley Munn residence in Midtown at 2901 Main Street was a sight to see. Almost resembles the mansions in Quality Hill in downtown! Wiley Munn made his fame in the dry goods and department store business.
  18. Built in 1885 and located at 614 Broadway, was the residence of Charles Milby. One of his first mansions I would assume?
  19. Came across an awesome old house this week. Looks to have been built in the 1920s? Love the old car!
  20. Frank Sterling was one of nine founders of the Humble Oil & Refining Company of Houston, Texas in 1911. In 1925, John Staub designed their mansion in the Broadacres part of Houston at 1509 South Blvd.
  21. Built in 1891 and designed by "star architect" Eugene Heiner, Thomas Scanlan mansion was beautiful. The house stood at 1917 Main Street. The home was eventually demolished and Thomas Scanlan built his new mansion in Missouri City which is daughters eventually took over.
  22. Cool...at least it will be saved. Does anyone know the status of the old mansion in the far southeastern corner of Sienna? It is off of 521 just north of Sienna Point. I have always assumed that it is the Scanlan Mansion but I have never confirmed it. It looked somewhat maintained but not in pristine condition the last time I was down there (several years ago). The Scanlans were a prominent Houston family that aquired the plantation in the early 1900's. They supposedly disassembled their house they lived in on Main St. in Houston and used its parts to build the mansion.
  23. https://www.houstonpress.com/media/pdf/nixon_meyerland-sept11.pdf contains the extensive brunch documentation have you ever found any photos of the demolished Blaffer home at 2 Briarwood?
  24. The architect George Dickey designed the Jehu Johnson-James Ross mansion located at 710 Hadley Street in 1882. I really like George Dickey's work. This is an awesome house and estate.
  25. Andrew Dow was the president of Milby & Dow Coal & Mining Company. Here is his house, or mansion. Photograph taken in 1907.
