  1. The Rendezvous Houston topic got me thinking about the big downturn. Bank failures, "see-through skyscrapers" and the "foreclosure belt". On the positive side, traffic got a lot better. Some places answered their phones "Houston Proud! How can I help you?"
  2. I have moved all of the 70s in Houston pictures to an external Web server. You can access them by going here: 1970s in Houston
  3. I see lots of wonderful photographs of the very early days of Houston ... what is generally available on various Houston photography archives both in person (Houston Public Library's photo archive, Story Sloane, etc) and digitally (any number of excellent websites & digital archives). What I would love to see more of, are various scenes around Houston in the 1980s ~ 1990s. I thought of this while driving on "Upper Kirby" over the weekend, as I was explaining to my girlfriend (who recently moved to Houston) what Kirby looked like in the late 80s/early 90s. I've lived here since 1987, so I'm sure many of you know what I'm talking about. Anyhow, as I tried to explain the 80s/early 90s scene to her, I could hardly remember it myself! I think it would be nearly unrecognizable to see a 30 year old photo of it. It would be fun to see some photographs of Westheimer, the Galleria, Rice Village, various movie theaters and restaurants (interiors or exteriors), during the early days of Houston's *rebirth* since the 80s crash, and onward through the 90s. This may be too broad an idea to get off the ground, but I figured it would be worth a shot. As I'll be going home to visit my family for the holiday weekend coming up, I'll try to kick this off myself by going through some older family photo albums to see if there are any photos of interest. If there are, I'll digitize them by any means necessary and attach them to the thread. I encourage you to do the same! Ben
  4. Someone posted an aerial photo of Gulfgate Shopping Center taken many years ago. I read that the center opened back in 1956. If you look at that photo, you will see mostly vacant land on Woodridge. I remember when I lived near there (1962-64) that Globe Department Store and a car dealership was on that street, but you can't see them on that photo. So I deduce that that photo was taken either in the late 1950s or in the very early 1960s before those two businesses were built.
  5. It's August 2019 people! Lets start a thread for all the notable, historic, events in the 2010s. What happened in Houston from 2010 - 2019? How did everyone's decade go? I'll title this thread Houston In The 2010s. Discuss, or share, your memories of the decade!

  7. Hi all, I am looking for information on the 1920's brick bungalow houses found in neighborhoods like Montrose, Heights, and the East End. Normally, there is multicolored brick... Specifically, I am probably moving into a 1920's birck bungalow type house with a porch...I wanted to learn more about it and its architectural style. Does anyone know books on the subject? Or websites that have info on these houses? Thanks for your help, JP

  9. hey all, i was wondering if any of you knew anything about the series of duplexes (all identical) that are located in the santa rosa neighborhood between telephone rd. and reveille. they are on the north side of moline street, and there are a total of about eight or ten red brick homes. i was also told they might have been housing for ellington field folks... thanks!
  10. Can anyone provide a resource to confirm that Chapman Street was named after the founder of Houston? I am told via oral histories from families that lived in the area,1910 thru 1960, that the Chapman was the developer of this neighborhood of Queen Anne Cottage style row houses, circa 1860-1890.
  11. HAIF, Given that the 2000s decade is almost over, lets start a thread about all of the Houston history that was in the 2000 - 2009 years. I'll name this thread Houston In The 2000s. What famous events in history happened in Houston during these years?
  12. What was Houston like in the 1900s? Yeah, I'm taking it back, way back! What type of information does HAIF have regarding Houston in the 1900's?
