  1. Am I mistaken or did the Sharpstown Mall recently disappear? I went down to Sears there last week and wondered why the parking lot was empty. It looks like it recently changed into the Southwest Corporate Center or something like that and Sears is the only retail tenant left. I didn't hear anything about this and was surprised when I noticed. What's the story?
  2. Not to be confused with Bayland Park at Bissonnet and Hillcroft. Precinct 4 Website: Burnett Bayland Park (harriscountytx.gov) Madres Del Parque Facebook: Madres Del Parque | Houston TX | Facebook Master Plan Website: Burnett-Bayland Park (harriscountytx.gov) "Harris County Precinct 4 and Commissioner Lesley Briones has begun the Burnett Bayland Park Master Plan. The Master Plan will transform Burnett Bayland Park into an iconic experience for all to enjoy. It is a collaborative community initiative, and the project team wants to hear your ideas for the future of the park. The Master Plan process will include the voices and input from key stakeholders and the surrounding community. There will be stakeholder meetings, community workshops, presentations to area groups and organizations, informal touchpoints and a survey. This is scheduled to take place from summer 2023 through Spring 2024." Chronicle Editorial from January in favor of the upgrades. Briones wants Gulfton to get a 'signature' park like Hermann. Why not? (houstonchronicle.com) "Burnett Bayland Park lies within the city limits, so one might wonder why the county, rather than the city, is spearheading a project of this scope. Briones’ answer: “My philosophy as commissioner is I am going to serve all of my precinct.” (About half of her Precinct 4 lies within Houston or other municipalities.) She reached agreements with former Mayor Sylvester Turner’s administration for the county to take over maintenance and operations of Burnett Bayland Park, Bayland Park in nearby Sharpstown and Freed Park in eastern Spring Branch."
  3. Per last week's Deal Sheet. Rick Williams, co-founder of Texas Direct Auto, has entered into a lease/purchase agreement for a 7.74-acre tract on Southwest Freeway between Rookin Street and Tarnef Drive that was the former location of a Southwest Lincoln Mercury Automobile dealership. Colliers International’s Bill Byrd and Marshall Clinkscales represented property owner Hillcroft & Rookin Properties LLC, and Jon Stautberg represented Williams. https://www.bisnow.com/houston/news/deal-sheet/this-weeks-houston-deal-sheet-90506
  4. Earlier this week I came across a wild photograph and wanted to share. Bayland Orphans Home (later, Bayland Boys Home) was destroyed by a fire on January 25, 1951. I then went researching more about the home and came across a wild map that I've never seen before. Apparently, the land was owned by Frank Meyer and was donated to Bayland Orphans Home. Included on the map are some parcels owned by MD Anderson. Talk about a cool map! I'd like to know more about those Anderson parcels. There are also more F.K. Meyer parcels just below the Bayland Orphans Home. Wild stuff! I assume it was just farm/ranch land back in the 1940s? Going onto Google Earth to view the campus in its heyday was a wild site to see. Apparently, the 100+ acre parcel only contained a single building. That was a lot of land! Could have made into into a campus, like the development down the block, Burnett Bayland Home located at 5500 Clarewood Dr. The road and single building: Here's the Bayland Boys Home on October 8, 1922.
  5. Some of these convalescent homes are confusing, but I believe the Price Convalescent Home for The Aged is actually the original structure of the Bayland Orphanage Home for Boys? Confusing because why would a single building occupy 60 acres? Cool finding! This is some rare Houston history! Edit: I couldn't find an address but I haven't finished by research. 100 years later, the City of Houston park called Bayland Park has an address of 6400 Bissonnet Street. I would assume the address was 6400 Old Richmond Road but that's probably wrong? Any help would be appreciated! From the newspaper Southwestern Times dated December 5, 1946. Permit To Operate Convalescent Home Refused (an editorial) Some Solution Must Be Found To Care For Aged Residents Of Home. Permit to continue operation of the Price Convalescent Home on Old Richmond Road was refused last week by Dr. C.A. Dwyer, acting director of the Harris County Health Unit, on the grounds that the operators were not complying with state health standards. The Southwestern Times, in publishing a story two weeks ago revealing the deplorable conditions exiting at the home, had no intention of seeking its closing. The editors had in mind that that publishing the story would arouse public opinion and force a clean-up and an improvement of living conditions for the old people. Many of the persons in the house are eligible to enter the Harris County Home for the Aged but are unwilling to renounce their state pensions and sign the paupers' oath, which are requirements for entrance. Many of the old people seem to prefer, and understandable, to be in a home where conditions are not up to the high standards which are maintained in the county home as long as they can retain their Independence and feel that they are paying their own way. It is to be hoped that some happy solution can be found for these aged persons. Perhaps a more hard boiled attitude with the operations and a “clean-up-or-get-out” ultimatum would do the trick. Possibly the operators just do not “know how” to run the place and a committee of the citizens could be appointed to guide them-- The Price Convalescent Home for the Aged on Old Richmond Road is rambling, frame building which houses some 70 persons. Renewal of a permit to continue operation was refused last week by Dr. C.A. Dwyer, acting director of the Harris County Health Unit, because investigators reported failure to comply with state health standards. At the extreme left can be seen a slide-type fire escape which is doubtless a relic of the days when the building house the Bayland Boy's Home and its occupants were agile enough to have made use of the chute if fire should have struck the home.
  6. https://companyonstage.org/ https://communityimpact.com/houston/bellaire-meyerland-west-university/arts-entertainment/2023/11/15/community-theater-company-sets-the-stage-with-opening-in-gulfton/ "After eight years of performing at temporary locations, the nonprofit theater group Company OnStage has found a new long-term home. In November, theater officials announced a new three-year lease at a space on Bellaire Boulevard in the Gulfton area. The announcement stated that the new location will be convenient for theater enthusiasts across southwest Houston."
  7. Brand new on Loopnet!! The listing was created 2 days ago, 11/8/23. This is the 1970s office building in the Gulfton area at 6330 Gulfton Street. In terms of the given area, this is kinda prime real estate. This is being marketed for owner/use so I'm not sure if it was be torn down to make way for multifamily housing. I known Gulfton is the most dense part of Houston. Seems like there would be a need for more housing rather than a vacant office building. Nothing wrong with the building, and given the area, it's a nice building. Probably won't be developed for a while longer. Maybe in 20 years. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/6330-Gulfton-St-Houston-TX/29996555/
  8. Love the old cars! Looks like the Ramada Inn located in Gulfton would have been active in the 1960s? There is a (new?) hotel near there. Did this get demolished and rebuilt into something with higher density? Look at all that natural grass and not concrete! Cool bit of history here. The PDF version has the restaurants mentioned on the map: https://chattx.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/GST-mural-map.pdf A new mural at Ed White Elementary School has been added to the trail. https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/arts-culture/local-arts/2023/09/13/462290/new-mural-outside-of-ed-white-elementary-represents-resilience-of-immigrants-and-refugees/ "The mural titled, "For a Better Future", depicts flags from various countries, the Statue of Liberty, and a child graduating. Aisha Siddiqui is the president of Culture of Health Advancing Together (CHAT), an organization that focuses on building self-sufficient and diverse communities. She said the mural was created to reflect the resilience of immigrants and refugees"
  10. I remember as a child in the 1980s, there was a large Christmas store, which had no windows. It had a lot of Christmas items sold there. It was near 59 and S. Gessner. I wonder what is the name of that store?
  11. On HAIF, I have heard talk about the old motor near Highway 59 and Beechnut. Today I was lucky enough to find an postcard! Looking on Google Maps, it appears a Shell gas station was built over the old motel? You don't see an English style development very often. Very cool! Texas Hospitality In An "Old English" Setting Manor House Inn and Restaurant 8115 Southwest Freeway (at Beechnut) Houston, Texas 77036 / Phone A/C-PR 1-0671
  12. West Oaks Hospital Psychiatric Care Greater Houston. West Oaks Hospital has faithfully served Houston and the surrounding communities for over three decades. We are a fully accredited 160-bed hospital. https://westoakshospital.com/ What does everyone think about this place? Been a staple around Houston forever. Maybe longer than the Menninger Clinic?
  13. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated August 1976 and came across this advertisement for Jim's Coffee Shop located at 6403 Hillcroft Street. What a cool vintage ad! Wasn't Jim's Coffee Shop a local chain? Other locations included Willowbend and Westbury? What's up with the business hours? That's an all day restaurant! Now Open Jim's Coffee Shop - 6403 Hillcroft at Westward. "Family Restaurants" Hours: Sun.-Thur. - 6:00a.m. - 12:00 midnight Fri. - 6:00a.m.- 1:00a.m. Sat. - 6:00a.m. - 2:00a.m.
  14. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 21, 1960 and came across a classified listing that mentioned the business Bellaire Turnpike Go-Kart Race Track At 5433 Richmond Road, now Bissonnet Street. Does anyone have any memories here? Any pictures of the place? I tried looking on old images but I cannot locate the go-kart place. Maybe it was a smaller indoor track? This would have been at the intersection of Bissonnet and Chimney Rock. Plan a Go Kart party, Bellaire Turnpike, 5433 Richmond Road, Special Rates, church, school, social clubs, birthday parties, after the game. Exclusive Clipper Karts, safety first. For reservations. 15. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 1, 1960 and came across an advertisement for Lazy Links Miniature Golf Links. Anyone remember this place? We have have some members who are old enough to have visited and played here. Announcing The Opening of Lazy Links Miniature Golf Links Corner Bellaire Blvd. & Hillcroft. Rates: Days-35c 1st game, 25c 2nd. Nights- 40c 1st game, 25c 2nd. Open Monday thru Friday-- 3 P.M. Saturday all day. Sunday after Church.
  16. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated April 19, 1972 and came across this awesome advertisement for Brunswick Sharpstown Lanes. Nearly a decade later, in February 7, 1980, the bowling place was called Brunswick Lanes. Anyone ever bowl here? How did it compare to the nearby Bellaire bowling lanes?
  17. Does anybody here attend the church in reference? It is now United, but when I was baptised there it was pretty basic. I noticed a building in the area of the former playground where we played. I was baptised in 1970. Was in MYF and sang in the chior. I have so many memories connected to this church.
  18. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated March 5, 1975 and came across a business listing for Kettle Restaurant located at 5545 Southwest Freeway. Formally, in the ad, the restaurant is called Kettle Pancake House. I believe they go by two different names. Did anyone eat here? Any pictures of the building? I'm surprised a pancake house would offer employees both paid vacations and a retirement plan.
  19. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 29, 1965 and came across a business ad for Rettig’s Drive-In Restaurant located at 7205 Hillcroft Ave. Did anyone ever eat here? I unfortunately never gotten a chance to try it. How many locations in Houston did they have? I know of 1932 W. Gray St. 2410 W. Holcombe Blvd. 7205 Hillcroft Ave.
  20. While browsing the The Bellaire Texan magazine dated April 3, 1957 I found a business ad for Whitehill Stables at 5418 Dashwood Dr. "One block off Chimney Rock Road Behind Chimney Rock Nursery" Recently under new management, Whitehill Stables & School of Riding (formally the Bellaire Stables.) Sandy Whitehall proprietor and instructor. J. Jones resident farrier. Horace Alley trainer & instructor.
  21. Looking at The Bellaire Texan magazine dated July 8, 1964 and saw a few advertisements for Tidelands Marine Center located at 7414 Ashcroft St. / 6100 Bissonet St. I like the play on the famous TMC hotel Tidelands. Same family?
  22. Went to Houston Baptist University today to visit the Lee and Grant exhibit. http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/About_HBU.asp?SnID=141925366 http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/MOSH_Lee_Grant_Exhibit.asp To be honest, I was not aware that this campus even existed until I looked up where the exhibit was located. I'm not from here originally. They would not let me take any photos of the exhibit. Pissed me off because this was the reason why I took my camera. So, afterwards I walked around this small campus and took some photos of the buildings. (the campus is located in the middle of the triangle created by the intersections of Beechnut, Fondren and I-59) Here they are: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3197.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3196.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3195.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3194.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3193.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3192.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3191.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3189.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3188.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3186.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3185.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3184.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3183.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3182.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3181.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3179.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3180.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3178.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3177.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3176.jpg Adios
