I was just wondering, how far apart are these two developments and do you all thing these two sites could change the perception of Houston as a urban walkable city? Which development do you think has the greatest potential for development? Some say that the KBR site should become a park, but I believe that there could be a much better use for the site. does anyone think Houston will ever get a legit botanical gardens? the ones in San Antonio are very nice and it would be a great addition to things to do/see around town. i know there are some smaller gardens, but why dont we have a full fledged botanical garden like many major cities?

Can anyone tell me where I can find pictures of old amusement parks? I was looking for Hanna-Barbera Land, Fame City, and Games People Play. There has got to be pictures somewhere. Also I was curious about pictures of teen hang outs around Humble. For example, Fun Factory, Golf and Games, and 2 movie theaters that are no longer there. Thanks for any help anyone has to offer!!!!!

Waaay back.... in the late 40's, early 50's, I played at one near downtown, on Fannin, near a Prince's Drive-In that was close to Gray. I think there were two courses there. Another was on Almeda just across from the riding stables at Hermann Park. Still another on W. Alabama, a couple of blocks east of Shepherd, that was across the street from what is now referred to as the Alabama Ice House. Edit: A 1967 Houston/Bellaire map lists the Golf Course near the Veterans Hospital off Old Spanish Trail . and Almeda Road.

I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated October 10, 1930 and came across a sports advertisement for End O' Main Golf Practice Field. Since there wasn't any other indication where this was located, it was located near Bellaire Blvd. (now Holcombe) and South Main Street. The Houston Golf Driving Contest. I was browsing The Thresher dated October 24, 1930 and came across a business listing for Dixie Golf Course located at 6105 South Main Blvd. "Just across the street from the South Gate." Was this apart of the Hermann Park Golf Course? Very cool find! Was South Main really a boulevard back in the 1930s or was this a typo? I believe the TMC area was actually called Uptown as well.

I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated October 17, 1930 and came across this advertisement for Green Mill Miniature Golf Links. Very cool! Yet more golfing for the South Main corridor. Too bad it's so old that we cannot look this up on historic images. Green Mill Miniature Golf Links Now Has Carpet Greens True Putting Stop at the sign of the Old Mill on Main Corner Southgate.

Incredible find on a 1950 Sanborn map! Miniature Golf Links On Old Spanish Trail on the corner of Speer Drive near South Main. Note the road called Speer Drive. I believe it was named after Sim L. Speer, founder of Speer Park which was located on South Main. Don't think we knew about this one. A decade later, there was a golf course and range up the street in the 7000-block of South Main.

Found this advertisement in the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated April 8, 1948. So wild! There used to be a golf range located at the modern day intersection of Bissonnet and New Castle? wow!! Bissonnet Golf Range Practice Driving Open Daily 5 to 10 P.M. 4560 Old Richmond Road Between Post Oak Road and Ave. A in Bellaire.

I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 22, 1955 and came across this business advertisement for Jim Deal's Golf Range located at 4003 Kirby Drive. Very cool! I thought golf ranges and courses were only out in the middle of nowhere, i.e. South Main in the 1940s. Kirby Golf Range Jim Deal, P.G.A. Pro Owner - Rice Graduate 1942. Complete stock golf clubs. Expert individual and group instructions. Sand trap target greens. Kiddie golf classes and play pen. Shaded tees. Open 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. 4003 Kirby Drive - JA 8-7389. Two classes in golf, one in for beginners and one for intermediates and advance, are scheduled twice a week for three weeks on Monday and Wednesday mornings at Jim Deal's Golf Range, 4003 Kirby Drive. I've been seeing a few posts around the internet regarding a golf driving range in the Meyer Park Shopping Center. Before the Walmart store moved in, there was a large hill on the parcel where the golf driving range was located. Anyone have any memories of this place? I tried searching around Google without luck finding information. I just found a Texas Monthly magazine dated December 1990 and it came with an article about a golf business called Meyer Park Golf center located at 9600 Meyer Forest Drive, Loop 610 and South Post Oak Road. I assume this was the place? Google Maps places 9600 Meyer Forest Drive at the corner of MFD and Meyer Park Blvd near the small lakes/ponds Not exactly the precise location of the current Walmart, but maybe it was platted differently 30-years ago. Looks like Saul Sellinger was the owner/partner of the Meyer Park Golf Center that was in business between the years 1989-1998. Fairway to Heaven A strike of a genius inspired Meyer Park Golf Center in Houston. Putting greens and lights for night playing are par for the course at most driving ranges, but this swanky practice facility’s five greens, elevated tee boxes, sand traps, and water hazards help you improve on a good swing. Arnold Palmer Putting Course At 7315 Bissonnet St.
Highrise Tower posted a topic in Historic Houston
I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated May 26, 1971 and came across a full-page advertisement for Arnold Palmer Putting Course located at 7315 Bissonnet Street, one block west of Fondren. Did anyone ever go here? Someone on HAIF mentioned: There used to be a Putt Putt at the corner of Fondren at Beechnut just southeast of HBU. Is this the putt putt course they are speaking of by any chance? Not exactly the precise location but it's close enough. The Grand Opening was May 26, 1971:-

I was reading the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated November 13, 1930 and came across a business advertisement for Colonial Miniature Golf Couse located at 3531 South Main Street. Colonial Miniature Golf Course. Shady and Comfortable in the day. Light as day at night. A Course with all the Finer Advantages of the best laid greens. 3531 South Main.

I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated November 22, 1929 and came across a business ad for Tom Thumb Golf Course "Next to the Field House". I assume this was across from a Rice University building. There was another golf course (only miniature golf?) right in that same area. Maybe there was a change of ownership that came with a name change? Who knows, maybe it's a whole new golf course! Anyone know the history of this golf course? It looks like the Tom Thumb Golf Course was a brand of golf courses? I noticed they had several in the state. I would say this is related to the Lilliput Golf Course by W.B.N. Miniature Golf Courses. A rebranding between the two.?

I was browsing the magazine Jewish Herald-Voice dated October 23, 1947 and came across an article about the Balfour Club Dance. On the night of November 2, 1947, at the Beth Jacob Auditorium, the Balfour "Golf Club" will be presented. The main attraction will be the presentation of the trophy to the winner of the Balfour Miniature Golf Tournament, which will be held Saturday night, Oct. 25, at the Almeda Way Miniature Golf Course. Tickets to the dance will be $1.00 couple or stag, and the time is 8p.m. until 12a.m. I believe the name "Almeda Way" was simply a local nickname? Possibly a typo? Wouldn't be the first time that Almeda was misspelled and published. Or, in 1947, Almeda was actually called "Almeda Way." Did we know about this? There was a lot of golf courses (and miniature golf?) around that whole area. In a A 1967 Houston/Bellaire map there is a Golf Course near the Veterans Hospital off Old Spanish Trail and Almeda Road. I was reading the newspaper The Thresher dated March 12, 1937 and came across this business ad for Scott's Golf Practice Range located on Old Main Street Road and Bellaire (now Holcombe) Blvd. Amazing find!! That whole area of South Main sure did have a lot of golf courses. South Main was an forthcoming street. It started off being a countryside of fields and dirt roads. Great for golf courses, race tracks, and horse riding. My question is, where exactly is this? I thought that the End-O-Main Dance Pavilion was at that intersection. Any pictures or satellite imagery of this golf range? I've seen a lot of Main & Holcombe historical photos. Nobody knows for sure what buildings belong to which company. You cannot read business storefronts. Only helicopter and satellite views. Here is a list of the South Main golf courses, and accessories, that I know of: A-1 Golf Driving Range At 7801 South Main St. Dixie Golf Course At 6105 South Main St. Houston Golf Center At 7710 South Main St. Speedway Golf Center On Hillcroft St. & South Main St. South Main Golf Center/Briarwood Country Club At 10920 South Main St. South Main Golf Range At 1509 South Main St. The 1937 advertisement says: Scott's Golf Practice Range Close to Rice Driving : Approaching : Putting Open Day and Nite Lessons by Appointment - Harry C. I was reading an old newspaper called The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated August 6, 1969 and came across this ad for Speedway Golf Center located on Hillcroft & South Main St. Ph - 723-7720 12 Acres practice area. 328 Tiff Tees. Wilson Balls *Accurate Yardage * Lighted by Steber Supoer Sports Lights Professional instructor - Frank Godsoe This is very, very cool! I never knew about this place! I guess the Meyer Speedway took all the fame, since it was located next door. Cheers!

I was reading The Thresher dated December 6, 1929 and came across an unusual golf course. Lilliput Golf Course. Course at Entrance of Herman Park across from Sam Houston statue. Also called the Lilliput Miniature Golf Course. Looks like it was owned by W.B.N. Miniature Golf Courses, Incorporated. Photograph:

Less than a year after closing for business, the former Willowisp Country Club and golf course in Missouri City has been purchased by real estate giant Trammell Crow Co. for development of a massive commercial business park. The 168 acres that are occupied by the shuttered country club and 18-hole golf course, which closed on Dec. 31, 2006 after almost 50 years in business, will developed into Lakeview Business Park. The park will eventually encompass 2.5 million square feet of industrial and commercial space. I found another location of Willowisp Country Club in March 13, 1966. Located at 13003 Settegast. Was this the original location or just another building in the 168-acres?
