My father-in-law was a native Houstonian, and he used to talk about an old illegal casino/brothel(?) out Hwy 90. He said it existed after WWII and up into the 1950's. There was an old brick gatehouse just west of the current Beltway on the south side of 90 that he said belonged to the casino...does anyone know about this, or was my late father-in-law yankin' my chain? According to an islander that I met recently, the convention center has already been wired for slot machines. Now that Tillman has officially taken over the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, how long will it be before Texas allows him to open his casino here? Do you think it's possible? Hollywood Dinner Club At 6102 Avenue S. , Corner of 61st Street. Gambler Jakie Freedman was an original partner in this club. He sold his interest to the Maceos, moved to Houston to open a gambling resort on South Main, then moved to Las Vegas when he wore out his welcome in Houston.

So just how the Jake "Jakie" Freedman's Las Vegas business venture go? Once he left Texas, he went to Vegas to develop and open The Sands Hotel. Here's an article about it:

We celebrated the New Year at the Balinese Room in Galveston. We were surprised at how nice the place was and the service was excellent. The big band sound played by Ezra Charles and his group was a perfit match to the 1940's decor. This place is a step back in time and well worth the trip.
