  3. This property is owned by Fenway Development Inc. a division of Lovett Commercial's owner Frank Liu. They are demolishing the concrete parking lot for what appears to be a 29 unit townhome complex. Looks like a small raptor (Kestrel maybe?) was buzzing my drone.
  4. Found a cool old school under construction and wanted to share. Under the direction of Nuns of the Incarnate Word built the St. Patrick's School in Fifth Ward located at 1102 Maury Street. This would have been in the year 1912.
  5. They used to/may still hold secret raves here. It's fenced off now but I went by here years ago on my bicycle once to take pics of the murals. They mostly look like graffiti to me now. They are now calling it a "peerspace" photography studio. I was right by it while taking drone pics of Japhet Creek Park. https://www.peerspace.com/pages/listings/60973ef5731915000d9c86ba?rwg_token=AOZt1jXVaBQItk68FzsE-ZZrHHzMK5Wcy2MN2YiFPrMbmoPlE5nK5MMB1eAhBPSCAFTNT2pWiIHGAuQKY7o2oPyExtjP4wTywQ%3D%3D

Any help with an address or information regarding this hospital/medical clinic? Cool piece of history here!! I wonder the date? I couldn't find anything in the historical libraries that I visit. Maybe if someone had the first name of the brothers we could find more. Beal Bros. 11. I was reading the newspaper The Houston Daily Post dated January 24, 1894 and came across an article about a Fifth Ward Budget. The last paragraph mentions a race track that is under construction. How cool is that!? However, there isn't a name/developer attached. Does HAIF already know about this race track? I wonder if it's around here someplace. Given the date, 1894, this could be one of the earliest tracks that we have! Can anyone identify this? Fifth Ward Budget. Items of Interest From the Busy Ward- People Who Come and Go. There re two or three very bad holes in the sewer on Walnut street-- Much interest is shown by the Fifth Warders in the new race track, which is under construction in the outskirts of the ward. Every day wagons are seen loaded with lumber and gentlemen on foot and in buggies going out. One, live, progressive citizen of the ward suggested The Post reporter the idea of opening Odin Avenue and making a first-class road all the way; also the extension of the street car line. It is presumed that as soon as the race track is completed all the necessary arrangements will be made both by the city and the street car company.
  12. My magazine has decided to start a Lost Houston History column, one of the topics I was given was Louis Dickerson, owner of Club Matinee, the Crystal Hotel, Checkered Cab (name unverified), and two of the largest underground casinos in Houston. I'm looking for any information on Club Matinee and Dickerson himself (Texas Monthly had his name as Dixon). Matinee was apparently one of the greatest blues clubs ever, rivalling the legendary Cotton Club. Dickerson according to some was the man that ran the 5th Ward, even having the police chief on his payroll according to some cops. I can't find anything hard or fast, being Houston kind of expect that, so I'm searching around. Are there any pictures of Club Matinee's famous Anchor Room, I've got a huge list of top names in blues that performed but no further information. Also looking to see if he was the godfather of the fifth ward or was that fanciful elaboration from witnesses. His death and the downspiral of the 5th Ward seem to be linked, but that could just be coincidence as well.
  13. Top dollar for tainted land? By Nancy Sarnoff Houston Chronicle, 2005 An abandoned toxic waste site that sits in the heart of a forgotten neighborhood two miles east of downtown could soon become the target of a bidding war by developers. The sales price could top $8 million for a 36-acre Superfund site, reflecting how this Fifth Ward neighborhood is changing. Despite the site's tainted past, its close-in location and size have already attracted multiple prospective buyers. The site, at 3617 Baer, has been abandoned since the early 1990s. And whoever leaves the auction with the deed to the contaminated property will also inherit a liability: the cleanup. The projected cost for remediation is about $6.6 million, which will be included in the sales price. Officials said the sale will likely mark the first time a Superfund site in this region of the Environmental Protection Agency
  14. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ro/6109559.html HISD proposes that Carnegie Vanguard is rebuilt next to Worthing, with the cafeteria and gym shared by the two schools. Worthing would also be rebuilt. Worthing parents are okay with the idea, but many Carnegie Vanguard parents do not like the idea at all and are vehemently against it. Why can't HISD simply rebuild Carnegie where it is and then rebuild Worthing off of 288?
  15. Any reaction from those about HISD's plans on getting rid of Wheatley High School despite protests from the community ?
