  1. JLW, that place was Celebration Station. I think it is still there, it is totally seperate from the old Malibu Grand Prix that is now a used car dealership.
  2. Someone at the Post Oak Mall article claims the cinema closed in 2000 because of some vague SEC filings that claim it was either operated by Carmike or Loew's (two different articles that claim contradictory things!). However, I believe it was General Cinema and closed long before the 21st century rolled around. What say you?
  3. History According to the Schulman Theaters website: “In 1926, Abraham Schulman moved to Bryan with his son Morris. Together, they purchased the Queen and Dixie Theatres on Main Street. The old Bryan City Hall was purchased in 1928 and converted into the Palace Theater - a premiere facility offering both Vaudville stage shows and the new talking films. The Queen Theater was torn down and rebuilt in 1939 with the first "conditioned air" system in any theater west of the Mississippi. After that, the Palace Theater was upgraded to include conditioned air as well. The three Bryan theaters ran successfully for many years, but days of single screen theaters passed and the Palace was the last of the three to close its doors in 1985.” The Queen Theater is an instantly recognizable landmark in Downtown Bryan and a favorite of photographers, both professional and amateur. There are numerous pictures of the Queen on the net, most from the past twenty years. Many are linked at the Cinema Treasures site and more can be found at Flickr. (Don Lewis’ photos of old signs and theaters are extraordinarily interesting and worth an hour or two alone). Here are some selected links to pictures of the Queen at Flickr: Queen and Dixie (circa 1986-88). The Dixie Theatre can be seen in dreary grey just a year or two prior to its reinvention as The Stafford Opera House in bright yellow. Queen (circa 1986-88) Queen (approx 2006) Close-up of crown A close-up of crown from another photographer, with more pictures from 2006
  4. Recently I went to San Antonio for the weekend and had a change to go to SeaWorld. I couldn't help but think and have always wondered "Shouldn't SeaWorld at least be by the SEA !!!" The one in SanDiego is and the one in Central Florida is surrounded by lakes and really not that far from either coast. To have a sea-life based theme park in the middle of dusty and hilly south texas hmmm..... I don't see the connection. Now if SeaWorld was in the Houston-Galveston Area that would make sense. First, there's 3 or 4 times more people in H-town, close by the water (Galveston), alot of the state marine research in done here. Not trying to put down the Alamo City but come on, having SeaWorld there is kinda weird. I think the Houston Area should at least make a pitch to the owners of SeaWorld of Texas to see if there willing to relocate from San Antonio to Houston. Maybe I'm wrong about this, just saying.
  5. A new proposed theme park for Houston. This is by the website www.rcsentertainment.com Also read this recent post http://houston.culturemap.com/newsdetail/03-05-13-new-theme-park-with-astroworld-ties-aims-to-fill-houstons-roller-coaster-void/
  6. No official release from MMD, but here's a post from Innerlooped. Link: http://innerlooped.com/1897/midtown-officially-ae-district/ So what does this designation mean for Midtown. Is there a case study for how this designation affects a district? I'm curious.
  7. Considering 2/3rd of the rides at Astroworld were destroyed, this might be difficult. But hey, new wooden coaster coming to Kemah next year. It's going to be nice. Expect formal announcement within a few days.
