Houston OK's contract to design new library for Westbury, Meyerland area https://communityimpact.com/houston/bellaire-meyerland-west-university/development/2019/11/20/harvey-damaged-library-to-get-$14-million-replacement/ Over two years after Hurricane Harvey flooded the building, the Meyer Neighborhood Library remains closed, but a new library in a new location is poised to replace it. Houston City Council approved at $1.4 million contract to begin designing a new Westbury Neighborhood Library, a part of the Houston Public Library system, to replace the Meyer Neighborood Public Library. It will also house the Frank HPL Express Library, which currently occupies a leased space. District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum said residents in her district are looking forward to having a new library, which would be located at 5505 Belrose Drive, Houston. “Many of us know that we have been waiting for the library in the Westbury area to move forward," she said. "We have been without a true library in the area since Harvey ...We are making progress, and I’m happy to see great architecture here. The firm we selected was the 2018 American Institute Architects Houston firm of the year.”

I just received a post card I bought off eBay. It is an image of the YMCA building from about the time it was first built. The image is not a photograph. It looks more like a print of a watercolor. It is very neat and I'm glad I have something to remember the 'Y' by. I used to work out there when my office was nearby. I even used to get my hair cut at the barber shop on the first floor. Lately I've been going to the Trotter Y on Augusta.

This is at the corner of Alabama and Fannin. After looking into the variance request, I found that it is planned to be 6 stories with a 2 story parking garage. The approval of the variance request was postponed from June 9th to June 23, 2011... I haven't seen any renderings, only a floor plan. "The Men's Center is a very vital facility that provides a recovery program to alcoholics to regain their lives and dignity. The proposed plan is to redevelop the site by demolishing the existing development and erecting a new six story building with an exterior facade similar to that of a modern hotel and a two story parking structure for ample off-street parking. The proposed development can be accomplished only if the Houston Planning Commission grants a ten foot building line variance for this site along Fannin Street . The main factors attributing to this condition are the size of the land area of the existing site (less than one acre); the dilemma being that the site is not expandable because it is bound by three major streets of the Midtown area; and that there is no available land for expansion in this block of Midtown. The approval of a ten foot building line variance would allow “The Men's Center” to continue it’s longevity of enriching the community as it has done for almost 50 years now. The new and modern high density housing facility would be able to serve the greatest number of citizens possible from this existing site which is centrally located within the City of Houston."
