  1. Like roller rinks, it appears to me that bowling alleys are slowly becoming things of the past. Are there any still open in Houston? I don't hear people nowadays taking about being in leagues and competing with other teams. My cousin told me that he remembers a bowling alley in Gulfgate that was underground. Ah, the sounds of the balls hitting the pins! People applauding when someone would get a strike! Twisting open the top of a cold, bottled beer wrapped in tissue paper! Playing a pinball machine! Eating a greasy burger in the cafe! It's been well over 20 years since I've bowled. Is bowling another recreational pasttime that is losing popularity to home computers and big screen TVs?
  2. I found a cool 1910s club this week. Joseph Finger designed the Concordia Club located at 1500 Rusk Street, corner La Branch Street. The club building featured bowling alleys, pool halls, banquet and cabaret hall, and a ballroom.
  3. Hurricane Ike has claimed another victim: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2009/07/island_bowl_galveston.php Where's the nearest bowling alley now, I wonder?
  4. I saw this business listing in a Rice University The Thresher magazine dated May 25, 1944. The Recreation Bowling Alley was located at 6445 South Main St. Phil Munn. was the manger. Right across from Rice. Very cool! Edit: Here's an ad from October 6, 1948 that includes the address.
  5. I need to verify the location of this building. I thought I read it was on Prairie Street, but I could be totally wrong. I'll look into this a little more later. Edit: Turner's Hall- Corner of Prairie Street and Caroline Street. This event venue is slightly confusing. The official postcard alludes to the actual name of the complex? Maybe I'm just misreading things? Progressive Houston, Volume II (1910 - 1911) mentions this: Exterior and Garden View of Turner Hall, Bowling Alleys and Band Stand, Covering One block of Ground. Houston Turner Hall- Interior View of Dance Hall, Sixty by One Hundred Feet - Maple Floor. Houston Turner Hall- Ladies' Reception Hall. Houston Turner Hall- Ladies' and Gentleman's Lunch Room. Houston Turner Hall- Bowling Alleys- Six in Number- Standard in All Features- Largest in Texas
  6. I never knew the company Recreation Bowling Alleys expanded so big. This is a whole new location! Anyone recall this place? Any photos or memories? Found this in the newspaper Labor Messenger dated December 1, 1944. Holiday Greetings: Recreation Bowling Alleys 20 Brunswick Alleys 1815 San Jacinto C. 2617 Recreation Bowling Alleys 20 Brunswick Alleys 6445 Main K. 3-3639
  7. Did anyone ever go to to the Recreation Bowling Center located at 7035 Harrisburg Blvd in the 1950s? I saw this floating around and I wondered if anyone had any memories to share. What about pictures? On this collectable item the business name is written as Center Bowling Lanes.
  8. Anybody remember "Rack and Roll" at the corner of Bellaire and Boone rd?
  9. I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated October 23, 1931 and came across a business advertisement for South Main Bowling Alley located at the End O' Main. Another ad which I cannot find at the moment, specified the location of Main at Bellaire. A little confused. This isn't the infamous Palace Recreation Bowling Alley located at 6445 South Main Street? The Palace Recreation Lanes was said to be directly across from Rice University in the 6400-block of South Main. Holcombe & Main has an address of 6977 South Main, using the address of the old Shriner's Hospital. Guess they are different? I wonder why this bowling alley doesn't get the historical press as the Palace Recreation Lanes. I guess being across Rice University had some fame. I believe I figured it out. These bowling alleys are a decade apart! South Main Bowling Alley was active in the 1930s. Palace Recreation Bowling Alley was active in the 1940s. One Game of Ducks Free With One Paid game and this ad at the South Main Bowling Alley End O' Main The other bowling lanes from October 6, 1948:
  10. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated April 19, 1972 and came across this awesome advertisement for Brunswick Sharpstown Lanes. Nearly a decade later, in February 7, 1980, the bowling place was called Brunswick Lanes. Anyone ever bowl here? How did it compare to the nearby Bellaire bowling lanes?
  11. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated February 12, 1964 and came across this business ad for Monarch Bowling Alley located Old Spanish Trail & Scott Street. Given it was in the 1960s, did anyone ever go here and bowl? Are there any pictures of this place, or postcards? I'd love to hear some memories! Coming Saturday... the one... the only.. Grundelet presented by The Rally Club and featuring the hairy navel contest between the following distinguished John "Jelly Roll" Mims, Bart "Hirsute" Huemmer, Gibson "Umbilicus" Anderson. Saturday, Feb. 15. 9 till 1. T.J. McWright's Combo. Free Beer. $3.50 Couple.
  12. I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated August 5, 1943 and came across an article about a club meeting at the Maplewood Bowling Alley. My question is, where exactly was this? There were bowling alley lanes in the Meyerland/Gulfton area of Maplewood? Was this near Stella Link? I know there were bowling alleys on Bellaire Blvd. and Bissonnet St. I wonder if the write meant those lanes? Here's the short article: Last night the members of the Ave Maria Club met at the Maplewood Bowling Alley for a bowling party. All Catholic students are invited to join the club, said the president today.
  13. Back in the 60's-70's there used to be a very large (I mean BIG) bowling alley near old KPRC studios located at what is now the Galleria. It may have been on Post Oak. What I remember about the place was that it had a slotcar track and also an archery range inside, not to mention other entertainment also. I think it was called ----- USA or something with USA in it. Any takers on this one? This bowling alley was similar in size to the "Bronco Bowl" in Dallas (if it is still there) See you at the Delman...
  14. I was browsing EBay for historical Houston items and I came across this matchbook that showcased the North Shepherd Bowling Lanes located at 650 Westcross Street. Did anyone ever bowl here? Any photos or memories to share? Is there a time frame for this bowling alley? I can imagine the 1960s?

While browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated December 22, 1949 I came across a business ad for Oaklawn Bowling Lane located at 3815 Harrisburg Blvd. Under Complete New Management - By Ray King. Phone number BE-0764. This looks to be the current place of El Charro Mexican Restaurant? Does anyone have any memories or stories to share about this bowling alley? When did it shut down?
  17. I was browsing The Southwestern Citizen magazine dated April 13, 1962 and noticed a business ad for Lamar Lanes located at at 2727 Timmons at 3600 Block of Westheimer. "Where Intramural Bowling Is Held" Did anyone ever go here?
