  2. http://ultimatefortbend.com/stories/327839-rosenberg-development-corporation-approves-agreement-with-imperial-performing-arts Rosenberg's Development Corporation agreed to the plan put forward by Sugar Land based Imperial Arts. The plan would generally allow the company to take office space near the Post Office, and would commit to restoring the old Cole Liberty Theater on Third Street. Ultimately, the goal is to create a "cultural district", sanctioned by the state's Arts Commission. And the original press release from last year... http://www.ci.rosenberg.tx.us/index.aspx?page=26&recordid=405&returnURL=%2Findex.aspx

  4. I'm sure y'all've already heard.. This is one of the nicest and coolest guys I've ever known. This is sickening. I've know Tom for quite awhile.. his sister is a friend of mine.. married to the sound guy and a vocalist at Radio Music Theatre where I work weekends. He's been around the art car scene longer than I have. http://www.click2houston.com/news/16238435/detail.html <H1 class=Headline>Driver Charged In Art Car Museum Curator's Death</H1> HOUSTON -- A driver has been charged in the death of the curator of Houston's Art Car Museum, who was killed hours after the 21st-annual Art Car Parade, KPRC Local 2 reported. <LI>Slideshow: Remembering Art Car Museum Curator Tom Jones http://www.click2houston.com/sh/images/ibs_icon/video.gifArt Car Parade Rolls Through Houston: Rachel McNeill Reports Houston police said Tom Jones was pinned under a car as he sat on a curb on Heights Boulevard near Center Street at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday. Investigators said Dustin Allen Poe, 23, drove his Pontiac GT over nearby railroad tracks and hit a car parked next to where Jones and an artist were sitting. "We had to lift the vehicle up off of him in order to get him out from underneath it," said District Chief Tom Wheeler of the Houston Fire Department. Jones, 51, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he died. The artist who was sitting next to him was not seriously injured. Poe was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. "He was flying down the road like everybody else was," sculptor W.T. Burge said. "It's a shame that he was drunk when he was driving. He shouldn't have been." Jones was at the museum helping wrap up a second, less publicized parade through the Heights that was held after the main parade near downtown Houston on Saturday. The director of the Art Car Museum said Jones' work and passion are visible throughout the museum. "He basically hung the show, painted the walls, greeted everyone who came through the front door with a smile and good humor and made everyone feel at home," Noah Edmunson said. "I don't know how we're going to replace him." Museum staff said Jones was a fixture in the art car community for 25 years. "Tom was the heart of the Art Car Museum," said Nicole Strine of the Houston Art Car Klub. "Tom made everyone feel special." Friends set up a makeshift memorial in the spot where Jones was run over. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but will likely include a procession of art cars.

  7. Today I noticed a Joseph Finger building in Midtown. Originally built for Barker Bros. Studio in 1931. Photo I took today:
  8. Hiy'all. I've been in the past a long time volunteer for the Art Car parade here in Houston.. have known and still know many Orange Car employees and volunteers, along with skaters.. The earliest I remember partying at the O-Show was, maybe 1983 seeing some avante gard band, I believe called something like Conceptual Objects of Sound or something like this. I've been to several parties there in the late 80's - early 90's, complete with live music, and have been to 2 weddings, and have taken my sister's kids there when they were little. Anyone remember when they started renovating Jeff McKissick's (sp?) former "beauty parlor"?

  10. Does anyone have any info or a photograph of the Southern College of Fine Arts? It was located in a three-story mansion on Lovett Boulevard (torn down years ago of course). A lot of local musicians such as Bob Dunn went there in the 1940s on the G.I. Bill. Supposedly it was connected to St. Thomas University. I'm not aware of any existing photograph. I'd also like to know when it opened and closed.
  11. I went to school at AI of Houston across the street. That was 7 years ago. At that time I think there were plans for apartments. 🤔

  13. Is the Alley theater a big deal in Houston any more? And what's it's History?
  14. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated October 16, 1942 and came across an article about the Little Theater located at 707 Chelsea Blvd. Little Theater Opens Tuesday An event of interest to the Institute theater-goers who have bee left in the cold since the disbanding of the Dramatic Club, will be the opening Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. of the first production of the season by Houston Little Theater. The offering will run through Saturday night, although the last night the house will be given over in a large part to Soldiers. The play will be "The Heart of the City", by Lesley Storms, and the direction will be in charge of Dr. Friedrich Jessner. The Little Theater is located at 707 Chelsea Boulevard. Dr. Jessner, who comes to the Little Theater from the drama department of Yale University, has a wide and varied experience in the theater bot in this country and abroad. I'm not exactly sure what this is. Doesn't sound like a film theater, but a theater of the arts. Maybe this was apart of the Rice Institute's courses? I see talk about a drama club.
  15. I was looking at the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 13, 1959 and came across an usual location for the Alley Theater. Back in 1959 the Alley Theatre was located at 709 Berry St. in Midtown. Now playing thru May 30 on stage Tennessee Williams Orpheus Descending directed by Nine Yance. There also used to be a Alley Theater Academy which is very cool to see.
  16. While browsing old Houston maps I noticed the Contemporary Arts Museum was at the corner of Fannin St. & N. Braeswood Blvd. The map was dated in 1950. Earlier this week I was browsing old Rice's The Thresher magazines. In an issue dated September 23, 1965 I found an add for the The Contemporary Arts Museum which was located At 6945 Fannin Street. Does anyone have any images of the old building? What replaced this structure? Is this where the TECO (then Houston Natural Gas) plant is located? TECO's history states that in 1967 the Houston Natural Gas Central Plant was built. https://tecothermalenergy.com/about/history/
  17. I didn't see this anywhere else, so here goes... A new folk-art inspired greenspace called Smither Park is being planned for the 1/2 acre lot adjacent to the Orange Show. The park's development is being sponsored by the Orange Show in memory of John H. Smither. The design is by Dan Phillips (although I can't tell if he's doing the overall park layout or just the pieces within the park). Here's the website: http://smitherpark.org/Smither_Park_Website/Welcome.html ... and a rendering (found on the site): http://smitherpark.org/Smither_Park_Website/Welcome_files/shapeimage_1.png

  20. This coming week's HBJ has an article about the Houston Ballet. They've purchased a full block downtown for a new headquarters. The block is located between Smith, Congress, Preston, and Louisiana. They sold half the block (Louisiana side) to help fund a new headquarter's building. No real info. was given about the size, but it did say a skybridge would connect the new building to the Wortham Theater. The rendering looks like a 13 to 14 story tower. More Filler is good news! Plus, if this is like their current West Gray location, it will house the ballet academy bringing further new life to downtown. http://cll.bizjournals.com/story_image/201158-400-0-1.jpg
  21. Psych! Going through old photos, found this 1975ish Texas Ave photo a friend took. At first glance, at least to me, looks like Jones Hall is under attack, but actually 19th century buildings being cleared away for progress. http://www225.pair.com/dhart007/misc/jones.JPG
  22. One of the blogs I follow, Brand New, has done an extensive piece about CAMH's new logo, which originates from the shape of the building. Linky: feed://feeds.feedburner.com/ucllc/brandnew Here's the before and after:
  23. I'm surprised I wasn't able to find this on HAIF. I ran a few searches, but nothing came up. Apologies if this is a repeat thread... Swamplot reported in May that the Univ. of St. Thomas will be building a new performance arts center near the Menil campus. The article indicates that the building will be four stories and just under 100k square feet. Here's the accompanying rendering: http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/st-thomas-performing-arts-center.jpg University of St. Thomas's Performing Arts Center Moving in Next to Menil Campus
