Next MODern Market: February 3 - 9, 2014 Hillside Townhouses 5230 Memorial Drive Houston, Texas 77007 HAR LINK This spacious two bedroom, two bathroom, circa 1960 mod townhouse is supremely situated directly across Buffalo Bayou from River Oaks' Tiel Way enclave of modernism and only a few blocks east of the beautiful 1,500 acre Memorial Park. It's also convenient to the Galleria, Heights, and Washington Avenue areas. Herbert William Linnstaedter of the firm Swenson & Linnstaedter designed, built, and originally owned the complex. Considered extremely fashionable and exceptional in design when completed, the details include wood beamed sloped ceilings, brick interior walls, copper-trimmed fire places, and specially detailed windows. The terraced grounds are beautifully landscaped and include a sparkling swimming pool. Herbert William Linnstaedter (1925-1996) was a native Texan who, as a teen, fought with the 99th infantry division at the Battle of the Bulge. He then graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in architecture and further studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He was certified as an architect in Texas in 1957 and was an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Houston. He was married to Celestine Linnstaedter who was a doctor of psychiatry at the VA Hospital. Swenson & Linnstaedter shared an office with Donald Barthelme where a number of Houston's most modern buildings were designed. In 1960 the firm opened a branch office in Dallas, Texas.
