  1. http://www.chron.com/sports/article/Beren-Academy-allowed-to-play-state-semifinal-3374028.php My question is, who issued the TRO? A judge is the only one who can do that, right (Annise behind it?)? Does any law back this TRO up?
  2. Found this nice MCM home designed by Jenkins for sale in the Willowbend area. Open house on January 29, 1pm - 4pm. I don't know how to get a photo in the body of the post, but below is a link to the HAR listing. The agent has pages from a magazine article about Jenkins and about the house in the photos. 10914 Willowisp Dr.
  3. I went to Johnston the first year it was built. When I first got there, I was a little shy about the nude swimming for boys and girls at the indoor pool. I think the girls went three days and the guys two days, and then it was switched the next week. A friend who went there after I did said that he couldn't remember when it was discontinued or why. Does anyone know the story? Can you imagine the outrage if this were to happen today?
  4. Anyone know what's going on at this Shell station? They took out the underground tanks and the pumps last week. They backfilled the hole and the windows and doors have been boarded up since. flipper
  5. Does anyone know what is going up at the northwest corner of Woodwind and W. Bellfort, directly across the street from St. George's Church? It used to be a small private school, bu the lot was cleared a year or two ago. They recently began laying underground sewage and plumbing. Anyone? Google maps
  6. I'd like to get some feedback on the future of Meyerland specifically, and the inner southwest near the loop in general (Woodside/Woodshire, Meyerland, Willow Meadows/Bend/Brook, Westbury). We purchased a home in the area within the last few years, and from our viewpoint (at least in Meyerland), there has been a lot of money reinvested in the ranch houses (of course with a few teardowns and McMansions). It seems that a lot of young professional couples are moving into the area to support this change. On the flip side, however, many articles have referred to the demise and deterioration of the "first ring" suburbs over the next decade to twenty years (that has already begun in some places). Granted, these articles typically are focusing on Eastern cities, but it seems that Meyerland (and further, places like Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Briarmeadow, etc.) fit the definition, but are the areas more likely to suffer in Houston places one "pass" further out (e.g. more like the ring near Beltway 8)? So let's keep it wide open. Any thoughts?
  7. Hi all, I will post more info about the William R. Jenkins home tour here in the near future, but I just wanted to start the thread now to tell you all to make sure you save the date. If you've been missing my presence on the boards lately, this is why. I've been pretty consumed with this tour and book. Here are the basics: On April 25th, during the Lawndale Modern Market, Houston Mod will be renting a bus and driving to many of William R. Jenkins early houses. Some of these houses will be open for the first time. Some will be open for the first time in years. Some will be exterior tours and some will be interior. The tour will last about 3 hours. Refreshments will be served at the final home on the tour (10920 Willowisp). A full color publication discussing Jenkins and the houses (with new photographs by Benjamin Hill) will be available for $15. Tour: Member price = $20 Non-Member price = $30 Join Houston Mod at the individual rate, get the book and take the tour = $60 Payments will be accepted through paypal or by cash or credit at our functions leading up to the date. Space will be limited so make sure you reserve your spots by emailing info@houstonmod.org. I'm hoping for full participation from each and every one of you! Jason
  8. I was going through some old magazines I had sitting around and came across the April 1957 Arts and Architecture article mentioned on the 10211 Willowgrove page from Houston Mod. There are also some images posted by Willowisp in this thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...showtopic=10395 http://www.arch-ive.org/jenkins/jenkins1957_600.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/jenkins/jenkins1957_text.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/jenkins/jenkins1957_outline.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/jenkins/jenkins1957_floorplan.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/jenkins/jenkins1957_render.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/jenkins/jenkins1957_render2.jpg
  9. Scroll to 5650 Dumfries Drive: http://www.jehproperties.com/available_homes.htm Purchased and demolition permit issued: http://swamplot.com/daily-demolition-repor...2-10/#more-6308 Looks to be an interesting structure...
  10. http://chron.travidia.com/SS/Page.aspx?sst...9&pagenum=8 Photos by me. You'll be hearing more on this house in the coming weeks.
  11. Went to the lovely park next door to the 610/Meyer Park Walmart and across from the AMC movie house I've been to lots: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/manos77035/BuffaloBayouandmore035.jpg Tried to feet the cute ducks with some old bagels we had and they didn't go for it. Looked across the street and noticed that the AMC 16 was closed. Had no idea. I think it was kind of going downhill from last movie seen there. During the prevues the sound went off and didn't come back on until the feature film. Didn't like that as I love the prevues. http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/manos77035/BuffaloBayouandmore038.jpg http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/manos77035/BuffaloBayouandmore039.jpg
  12. Near the train tracks; anyone remember this place? (I'm not 100% sure about the name; it could have just been "Mel's". My parents referred to the place as "Mel & Bunny's"; I think Bunny was Mel's partner or perhaps his cook. Mel's Bar B-Q At 4113 Willowbend Blvd. Edit:
  13. The Houston Chronicle has an article about this: http://search.chron.com/chronicle/openDocu...p;selectedPath= The new Pershing Middle School campus will open on Wednesday, January 17, 2006. Pershing, a Houston ISD school, serves the cities of Southside Place, West University Place, and Bellaire as well as sections of Houston around the areas, such as Braeswood Place, Southgate, Old Braeswood, Westwood, and a sliver of Meyerland. The kids were allowed to tag the old 1948 campus with graffiti (such as "Name" was here).

  16. www.har.com/5776233 OK, so I am not a modernist, I just like neat stuff. (I just used neat... wow.) So, take a look at this place and let me know if you'd consider it "mod" or some other name. Some houses, I know would be considered mod. Some, like this one, I'm not so sure. I'm guessing that, by some strict definition, it's not. However, by the "Metropolitan Home" definition, it probably is. I go more by the Met Home definition of mod, and tend to like all the places that would fall into that more general bucket. I've actually gone to look at this place (years ago). Other than the neighborhood, it looked like the house could be made into something nice with the right people working on it. If I were single, I'd take it on. Thoughts on the house and the SW Fondren Northfield subdivision/area? Thanks, TK http://harpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/94/hr2016894-1.jpg http://harpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/94/hr2016894-2.jpg http://harpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/94/hr2016894-4.jpg
  17. Brand new listing in Willow Meadows at $172.38 per square foot. Highest sold price per square foot in MLS is $169.51 in August 2007. A few others have sold around $167.00 per square foot. HAR Link EDIT: By the way...it's not my listing, just thought I would share.
  18. Hi everyone, A house on Willowisp just went up for sale. It is 2 doors down from the Jenkins house that was on the RDA tour. It is not a Jenkins house, but it has some definite mod influences. It is a relatively small house at 1700 sq. ft. but it has a nice wall of glass overlooking a cute backyard. http://www.har.com/search/engine/indexdeta...=0&backButton=Y It will take a lot of TLC though. It is definitely not move in ready, but I think it would be great for someone who is in the same boat as I was last year at this time. Someone looking for a mod fixer-upper close to the 610 should love it. And at just under $200K, you will have some wiggle room for repairs. It has damaged hardwood floors, 80's carpet I would tear out in a heartbeat, not so hot kitchen laminate tile, and the master bedroom is in the front of the house instead of the back where I would prefer it. On the good side, I love the small lava rock courtyard in front of the house with a huge palm tree. The entryway tile is totally cute. The formica in the kitchen is pretty cool. I like the wood paneling in the living/dining area (though some might not), and the backyard is small and managable and borders on the bayou. If you bought it you would live close to one of the coolest cul de sacs in town (Briar Hollow Lane probably beats us out despite all the rebuilding going on there). The same realtors that have 10111 Cliffwood have this one and they tend to do a lot of open houses, so be on the lookout for it to open again on a Sunday soon. Jason
  19. Did anyone on this board go to Samuel Clarke (S.C.) Red Elementary located near the Willow Meadows and Willowbend subdivisions at the intersection of Tonawanda and Cliffwood? They had a celebration today commemorating the school's 50th anniversary. Teachers and principals were there from the past and present, even some who taught during the early years in the late 50's, with scores of alumni.
  20. It's now an apartment complex and probably some of the parking lot of the movie multiplex. To the neighborhood kids of the 60s and 70s, it was just "the woods." It was where the kids got away from their parents to do their smoking, toking, drinking and all the other "ing" things that they weren't suppose to be doing. I tried hiding my Playboy stash out there once, carefully bagging it in plastic and carefully tucking my treasure under some rocks, but somebody discovered it and took it. I remember coming across a yucky matress and a makeshift shelter of plywood with cigarette butts, empty liquor bottles, etc all around it. Strange thing was, there was evidence galore of people coming and going, but we rarely ran into anyone else. The occasional bb gun dude, but 90% of the time, you felt like you had all the acreage to yourself. Seems like a weird thing to feel nostalgic for.
  21. I don't want to post the pics all over again, so here's a link to some shots of the inside of my "new" home on Willowisp. These are some of the shots I'll save as "before" shots. It's all potential at this point. http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3215 By the way, my wife and I will be docents at 10911 Willowisp tomorrow between 2:30 and 5pm. We'd love to meet all the mod enthusiasts. You are also welcome to stop by 10920 and visit if we are there. Part of the time we'll be there and part of the time we'll surely be doing the house tour ourselves. Also, the former owner is allowed to be there to clean out the rest of her stuff, and I'm not sure exactly when that will happen... I'm so looking forward to the house tour! Jason
  22. A few blocks away from my old house in Willow Meadows. From the pictures, it looks to be a good condition, which would make sense given its premium price for the neighborhood (heavily remodeled ranchers go for about the same). 10111 Cliffwood http://harpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/73/hr1491773-1.jpg
