  1. I'm researching the developer and architect for this old garden-style apartment complex. This is located on the west end of Willowbend Blvd. Appreciate any information and knowledge anyone has. Does anyone have any memories of this place? Probably has been around for 40 years? Website: https://www.regalpointetx.com/
  2. Great post! I haven't thought of those restaurants in a long time. There was at least one in the SW Houston area, possibly on S. Post Oak. I only have a very vague memory of what it looked like on the outside (i.e. location-wise). I do remember the great steaks and potataoes.
  3. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated November 1, 1961 and came across this business advertisement for Fountain of Youth Car Bath & Auto Clinic located at 11221 South Post Oak Road near South Main Street. Does anyone ever take their car here for service or a car wash? Looking on Google Maps, there is a car repair shop at the current location. I'm sure the building has changed ownership half a dozen times since 1961. Or, I wonder, if this is the same family ownership after all these decades? Maybe the son of the owner runs it now? Grand Opening L.J. Schwartzkopf's Fountain of Youth Car Bath & Auto Clinic Opening Special - Automatic Car Wash - 95¢ * 5 Minute Automatic Car Wash- * Expert Auto Repairs & Service- * Top Quality Used Cars- Free Gifts For Everybody We Invite You To Visit Fountain of Youth Just North of South Main 11221 South Post Oak / PA 3-7242
  4. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 11, 1968 and came across a business advertisement for The Egg House located at 11216 South Post Oak Road. What's the story with this company? It would be hard to believe, in 2023, there would be a retail store that only sold eggs. Did the sell dairy as well? Milk, cheese, or yogurt? Looks like the eggs came from Lindsey Farms. The farm, and retail headquarters was located at 11216 S. Post Oak. I know they had a smaller retail store down the block at Willowbend and South Post Oak. I believe they had a total of 7 or 8 locations across the city. I would love to hear more about this company. Information about the farms and the Lindsey family. The Talking Hen Says: "This offer is made to invite you to try our Farm Fresh Eggs" (Sold only in 3-doz. cartons) Announces: Special Offer Bring Discount Coupon For: 3 Dozen Grade "A" Large Eggs for $1 Lindsey Farm Eggs are Farm Fresh, produced on Purina Feeds, delivered direct from the farm to our tore; are best quality available, and are backed by a Money-back Guarantee. If you want quality and freshness in eggs - at economy prices - redeem this coupon at Lindsey Farms Egg House, 11216 S. Post Oak. (Look for Red & White Checkerboard Sign.)
  5. I was looking at old aerial photography and noticed a gun range formation near the intersection of South Post Oak Road and South Main Street. Closer towards Gasmer and S. Post Oak I guess. The gun club was located across the street from a supposed race track. I assume these two places were operated as a singe sports club. Anyone know the name of either the gun club or race track? 1944: 1953 includes an oval race track on the opposite side of S. Post Oak.
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated in 1967 that featured an advertisement for the restaurant Topper's Steakhouse located at 8600 Hillcroft Street. Does anyone recall this place? Does the Meyerland Martial Arts Center that stands here occupies the same building at the former restaurant? Hard to tell. The new Topper's Steak House is now open for business at 8600 Hillcroft. The new restaurant features top sirloin steak for $1.39 and is owned and operated by JACO Enterprises, Inc. The new restaurant will operate on the meat and potatoes principal and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. Until 9 p.m.
  7. There's a brand new CVS at 4930 West Bellfort Avenue!! Wasn't there a church here? What ever happened with the Salem Lutheran Church? Did the COVID-19 pandemic take them out? Was there a small theater group called The Company OnStage located here? I believe the original The Company OnStage was located in Westbury Square. This may have been there 2nd location? Where are they now? Any pictures of the demolishing of the former church?
  8. Anyone remember this restaurant located in Westbury called Fast Draw Hamburgers that was located at 12411 Hillcroft Street? When did this place open/close? Was the restaurant located in a retail strip center or was it a stand alone building? This coupon ad is dated 1977.
  9. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated November 20, 1980 and came across an advertisement for Chancellors Restaurant & Bar located at 6534 Dumfries Drive. Does anyone know if this restaurant was from the same owners of Chancellors Family Center? They have to be! The Chancellors sports club is located at 6535 Dumfries Drive. Was there a restaurant located inside the club? Maybe the decades do not match up? This might have been the family's first business! When did Chancellors Family Center open?
  10. By any chance, will there be community improvements the neighborhood park called Gail Reeves Park located at 8800 Mullins Drive? Who exactly was Gail Reeves?
  11. Does anyone remember the old Westbury post office that was located at 5505 Belrose Drive? It has since been demolished to make way for the new Dr. Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library. Who was the architect? What year was it built? I'd imagine it was built in the 1950s/1960s when Westbury was forming.
  12. Does anyone know the architect for the Westbury fire station located at 11655 Chimney Rock Road? Thanks.
  13. I was looking around the landscape of the of South Main coordinator in the 1950s and found a zig-zag race track (which would either be motorcycle dirt bike racing - motocross, or go-kart racing) next to the old Sam Houston Airport located on South Main Street. This race track was located at the present-day Hillcroft Street off of South Main Street. With addresses, around, 12417 Hillcroft Ave. near 13755 South Main St. The race track existed before that section of Hillcroft street was built. Anyone know about this track? Would love to know a name, or address, so I can research it further. With oval tracks, it's always a hit or miss if they are actual race tracks as they could be horse riding rings instead. With a track orientation like this, this can only be a race track of sorts? It's next to the airport, but I doubt planes would make all those loopy zig-zag turns. What else could it be?
  14. Anyone ever been to this park? I used to come here back in the day! Here's some information about it. http://www.westburycrier.com/greenspaces This 8 acre park has a .51 walking trail and is adjacent to Anderson Elementary. Hager Park, with its covered basketball court, is located between Landsdowne Drive and McClearen Dr, and attracts many in the neighborhood for outdoor sports. There is playground equipment and a soccer field.
  15. Does anyone ever go to this bar & ice house? Looks pretty cool! Found it in a local newspaper dated February 1966. Looks like they had several locations: Pirate's Cove Inn # 1 - 1435 Gessner Rd. Pirate's Cove Inn # 2 - 2413 Rice Blvd. Pirate's Cove Inn # 3 - 5821 West Airport Blvd.
  16. Anyone remember a fireworks stand at the intersection of South Main Street at Fondren Road? Any pictures? Who was it ran by? This advertisement is dated December 20, 1961
  17. I was looking around at old images of Meyerland and came across an unusual shape in the forest land prior to Meyer Park Shopping Center being built. This would have been in the early 1960s. 1962 to be exact. I never knew about this! I wonder if this is a second, not as serious, Meyer Speedway? Looks like the race track was located at the present-day Banfield Pet Hospital located at 10275 South Post Oak Road. The track could have also had a West Bellfort address as well. It was located on the corner of S. Post Oak and W. Bellfort. Given the shape of the race track, this would have been a motorcycle/motocross track? Or possibly a go-kart track? It's not an oval shape. Looking on Google, both motocross and go-kart tracks have that similar "zigzag" shape. I know there were a few dirt bike retail stores in the area. Such as Westbury Yamaha located on West Bellfort near the present-day Taco Cabana. 1953, before Meyerland/Willowbend got developed! 1962: Larger: 2023, Meyer Park Shopping Center. The track was located where the first building is, on the narrow corner at the bottom. *and wow look at all that surface parking!! I wonder if Meyerland will ever densify and build on those vacant lots? Just build a parking garage, or two and then get rid of the surface lots!
  18. I was researching the developer of the Westbury neighborhood of Houston. It looks like Ira Berne was the developer of the residential subdivision in Southwest Houston. Julian Keither also helped Ira Berne with the Westbury Company. (formally known as Berne Company?) Ira Berne also developed the Westbury Square Shopping Center as well. In the magazine House & Home dated February 1958 there was a small detail of the Westbury neighborhood. Westbury is the most active subdivision in Houston's growing southwest. Photo shows a portion of the first section, where 20 builders have erected houses. The finished development will have 5,000 lots. Most houses here sell for $16,000 to $35,000. His wife, Geral Berne, obituary mentions they lived at the Lamar Tower at 2929 Buffalo Speedway. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/houstonchronicle/name/geral-berne-obituary?id=20774692 A truepeoplesearch result also mentioned Ira Berne lived at 2929 Buffalo Speedway: 2929 Buffalo Speedway #2004 Houston, TX 77098 Harris County (Apr 1993 - Mar 2015) From the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated August 13, 1958: Westbury Will Be Site Of 1959 Home Builders Parade Of Homes The display of new homes, 1959 style, will be on 35 lots on Warm Springs in Westbury Section 3, adjacent to Parkwest. Julian Keither, of the Westbury Company, said homes on display will include both those of the type being constructed in Parkwest and in Westbury- Westbury addition is being developed by Ira Berne. Started early in 1955, the subdivision now has 1600 homes, and consists of Westbury, Parkwest, and Westbury South. Eventually the developers expect 4800 homes will be built on the 1700 acres included in the addition. The subdivision has two elementary school sites, one of which will be ready for this fall, and a senior high school site at Chimney Rock and Luddington. The new junior high school for the South Post Oak area is located adjacent to Westbury. There are also plans for a 50 acre shopping center to be known as Westbury Square at Bellfort and Chimney Rock. From houstonhistorymagazine.org: As the city’s boom continued through the 1950s and 1960s, other developers followed the same formula. In the mid-1950s Ira Berne’s Westbury Corporation developed the large Westbury neighborhood at the end of South Main. Covering three square miles and containing 5,000 homes. Consistent with the social conformity of the 1950s, all of Westbury’s homes were ranch house designs, but they featured a remarkable amount of stylistic diversity. 19. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated October 13, 1971 and came across an ad for Rupp-It-Up Accessories & Services located at 4921 W. Bellfort Blvd. This looks like the present-day location of the Taco Cabana? By any chance did this company and their clients go racing in the Willowbend/South Main area? There are a handful of unknown oval tracks in the area of this store. If they sell and stock bikes, maybe they had a place nearby to race them? "Rupp-It-Up" Accessories & Service. * Indian Motorcycles * Dune Buggies * Trail Bikes * Mini Bikes * Go-Carts 4921 W. Bellfort - 723-8443 Factory Authorized Dealer for Rupp & Tecumseh.
  20. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 14, 1966 and came across a business advertisement for Adventureland Pre-School located at 10420 Mullins Drive. Phone numbers: PA 3-2836 and PR 4-4053. Did anyone attend this pre school? 1966 wasn't too long ago, I wonder if some fellow HAIF members went here. Any stories or memories about this place? Was Adventureland apart of Medical Center Charter School, St. Nicholas School, or St. George's and St. Patrick's Episcopal School by any chance? I wonder if Adventureland was their earliest school, or if it was a completely separate school?
  21. Medical Center Charter School (MCCS) was established in 1996 by the Texas State of Board of Education. It was closed in 2015, from my research. MCCS became St. Nicholas School. The Baytown Sun dated August 6, 1996 says the MCCS was located on North Braeswood (7200 Main plot). Maybe their second location on Mullins came at a later date? I'm confused on the St. Nicholas School. They have moved around a few times and also changed business names. The school was founded as St. George's and St. Patrick's Episcopal School which was at 10420 Mullins Drive as well. So maybe the name changes were St. George's and St. Patrick's Episcopal School > Medical Center Charter School > St. Nicholas School. Too bad the COVID-19 pandemic took out their new 25-acre South Main campus. That seemed like someplace where they could grew for the next 50 years. Can anyone decipher their official logo? What's up with the British flag and the royal bishops symbol? I wonder why the castles? What does the bird symbol on the lower right mean?
  22. The other end of the monorail, which never connected to the arrowhead park end, was on main, just west of fondred. I used to walk up the rail and play in the ruins of the car in about 1965. It was an interesting experience-smashed plexiglass windows and weeds growing in the ruins of something too futuristic for houston at the time
  23. I was browsing the newspaper The Texan dated April 1, 1987 and came across a business listing for AMI Westbury Hospital located at 5556 Gasmer Dr. Was anyone born here by any chance? I believe this small hospital was active in the 1970s and 1980s? It has since changed ownership and is now listed as HopeBridge Hospital. Recently on Loopnet, the 5.7 acre site was up for sale but has since been withdrawn/sold. Hard to believe an independent, or out of state network, could survive in Houston with the TMC being located just 6 miles away. I wonder of there were any other AMI hospitals around town? I believe I ran into the name while browsing HAIF once. Did the AMI hospital network go out of business, or merge with a bigger name? Loopnet listing: I could see a Class-B multifamily complex go up here. Probably garden style. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/5556-Gasmer-Dr-Houston-TX/13284799/
  24. Maplewood Square Shopping Center At 9700-9730 Hillcroft Ave. This is the shopping center with the Walmart Neighborhood Market Grocery Store and the former New York Bagels & Coffee Shop. Loopnet listing: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/9700-9730-Hillcroft-Ave-Houston-TX/12094932/
  25. I was looking at Meyer's Speedway on Google Earth and noticed an amazing discovery! There was another, smaller, track that pre-dates Meyer's Speedway! This was located across the street, on South Main Street and Dunlap Street. I assume this was a trial design track for the forthcoming Meyer's Speedway? Or maybe this was the original track, and since the speedway was such a popular hit they expanded up the road? In 1953 you can see the track on the left: In 1978 the track was grown-over with commercial development, and Meyer's Speedway appears across Hillcroft Street. The commercial development is the old Woolworth's Department Store (Safeway Grocery?) shopping center? I assume that is Butler Stadium across Meyer's Speedway? There was supposed to be a golf range/course next to Meyer's Speedway on Hillcroft & South Main. Maybe that came soon after? Image credit: https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer 1953: 1957: Looks like there were also two small tracks just outside the Meyer's Speedway. I assume these were test tracks, or maybe fun Go-Kart tracks? Or maybe even spectator seating?
