I have done some research about the theatres in Houston and the one on Rusk between Travis and Main was the Ritz Theatre. The original Majestic was off Texas, but I have seen reports of there being two "Majestics." There was only one Majestic built by John Eberson and it was the first "atmopheric" theatre that he built, but unfortnately it was demolished in the early seventies. He has two others that are still standing in San Antonio and Dallas. They seem to perserve their history better than us. If you know where the other majestic was, do tell. Subdude,Sunday, June 26th, 2005 @ 3:42pm] Is that in the original Majestic or the one on Rusk? <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Great pic, subdude. I had forgotten they referred to the Flying Red Horse. In my memory, the one at W. Gray and Shepherd was white. The Magnolia bldg in downtown Dallas has been restored as a hotel and the big Flying Red Horse on top of it restored, too. There are pics on line. I haven't been on the sidewalk on Main in many a year. BTW, how far back does your collection of great pics go? How about the Iris Theatre, 612 Travis, 1920s?

That movie theatre on Richmond was Windsor Theatre. I saw Gone With the Wind there in re-release sometime in the late 70s. It went the way of all one-screen theatres even though I remember it as being very plush & luxurious.

Crown Theatre was opened on October 3, 1914 with “The Weight of a Crown”. It was listed as (Closed) in the 1933 edition of Film Daily Yearbook. Around 1939 it had reopened as the Joy Theatre. By 1950 it had been renamed Joy-Tex Theatre. By 1955 it had been renamed Tex Theatre and in 1956 back to Joy Theatre. It had closed by 1957.

The new Cineark at Market Street was supposed to focus on indie and international movies for adults. It now appears thez will use it as an overflow for Tinseltown failures. What a shame.

Who remembers the old State Theatre located at 5913 Washington Ave. The State Theatre was the second with that name in the city, after the Loew’s State Theatre on Main Street. This State Theatre opened on August 1, 1941.

I was watching this news series about old Houston and they showed a black & white film about Houston night life in the 1960s. One segment covered theaters and they showed a theater called Theatre Inc that aired gay films. I can't find any information about this theater on the internet. What's the story here? Address? Thanks.
