  1. Looks like it sold recently. A crew was doing a pretty thorough interior demo this morning. No idea what is going in, but would assume they are keeping the structure in place to take advantage of the setbacks (or lack thereof). https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/3400-White-Oak-Dr-Houston-TX/26494761/

An archive link of the thread before its deletion is coming soon. Something is going in at 1920 Houston Ave. From Twitter yesterday: 1920 Houston Avenue is getting remodeled. Likely a new restaurant/bar? Was the former re:HAB bar. @swamplot https://twitter.com/chrisandrewsCDA/status/818506862299643906
  3. Does anyone know what is going on with the demolition of a Washington Ave. lumber and hardware store between Detering and Lester? With the completion of the demo, it looks like the entire block will be clear for new contruction. Will this be more residential (right on Washington), strip center, or mixed use?
  4. Not technically the Heights....but couldn't find another area to put this. Houston restaurant co. to open ZZ Top-themed Tex-Mex joint By Laura Gillespie – Reporter, Houston Business Journal 4 hours ago Tres Amigos Café y Cantina will replace Shepherd Park Draught House at 3402 N. Shepherd Drive April 22. Ken Bridge, CEO of Delicious Concepts Restaurant Group, which owns both concepts, is turning the draught house into a ZZ Top-themed Tex-Mex restaurant, showcasing Bridge’s extensive collection of ZZ Top memorabilia. Stewart Skloss, founder of Pura Vida Tequila, as well as ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons, both helped come up with the idea for the restaurant, but they have no ownership in it. Tres Amigos will serve classic Tex-Mex, with combo plates, tacos, burritos, weekend tamales, queso and more. On the drinks side, it will have margaritas with Pura Vida tequila and Mexican beer. The 1,500-square-foot space will be redecorated to show off Bridge’s ZZ Top memorabilia from floor to ceiling, but otherwise will be relatively unchanged. The inside seats 40 to 45, with another handful of tables on the patio. The current concept features punk, pop and rock memorabilia pieces from Bridge's collection. Bridge, who just announced the transition of his concept Ritual into Mapojeong Galbijib, a Korean barbecue restaurant, said he likes to change up concepts as he comes up with new, progressive directions. “We’re all ready for a new frontier; I think we’re all ready for a change. For us as a company, and for me personally, I’m ready to change things up and push forward,” Bridge said. “I’ve always wanted to do Korean barbecue, people who know me know that.” Bridge says he's ZZ Top’s No. 1 fan. He began collecting memorabilia for the bearded Houston-born rock band when he was a child; his first piece was a poster he won at a carnival game while living in Arizona. “I call it collecting, my wife calls it hoarding,” Bridge said. “I just became obsessed, not just with ZZ Top.” In honor of Skloss, Gibbons and Bridge’s friendship, the company says, 75% of restaurant proceeds will go to the St. Jude Foundation, with which Gibbons has worked closely over the years. “(My wife) Christina and I are absolutely thrilled to be supporting such an amazing organization and to continue to give back to those in our company who have contributed so much to our success over the years,” Bridge said in a statement. by HBJ.

An archive link of the thread before its deletion is here. Mods, please don't move this to the Heights forum where all of my Washington Corridor posts were moved to. Mods, also don't sneak and move this thread and all the others for Washington Corridor, Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, and Independence Heights to the Heights forum once all the previous content is reposted as y'all have done in the last two weeks and continue to do. This is NOT in the Heights and it's not part of the Greater Heights area in any way. This is in the Washington Corridor area, an area that as suggested and advocated for previously needs its own forum because there is lots of development happening here, much spurred by the Sawyer Yards and Buffalo Heights developments. That in itself usually merits the creation for a new neighborhood forum. Until then, posts for those neighborhoods should remain in the forum for "Other Neighbohoods" has is done with other threads that don't have a dedicated neighborhood or area of town forum.Thanks. Swamplot is reporting that the old Drake nightclub at 1902 Washington Ave (was also The Gatsby and The Mark in recent years, was also Olive's Drug Store in late 1800's or early 1900's) is transforming into a retail space. One of the proposed tenants seem to include Tacodeli out of Austin. Also included in the center according the marketing brochure is a high end barbershop, brewpub and ramen restaurant. From Swamplot: Yet another fast-casual semi-gourmet taco chain from north of town appears to be spreading saucy tendrils into the 610 Loop — Austin-based Tacodeli, which announced intent to expand to Houston and Dallas last year, is now appearing in renderings and marketing plans of Lovett Commercial’s site at 1902 Washington Ave., across the street from upscale cocktail bar Julep and just west of cow-to-table butcher shop and steakhouse B&B Butchers. Tacodeli will be jostling against Torchy’s Tacos (also an Austin export), Fuzzy’s Taco’s (a Dallas chain currently working its way down through the north Houston ‘burbs to West Gray and Post Oak), and Velvet Taco (another Dallas chain) in the rush to claim territory in the local tacoscape, already thick with native Hous-Tex-Mex options. Tacodeli’s new spot is the former home of once-chandeliered nightclub The Drake, now the site of several elaborate grafitti murals. The Drake faced scrutiny in 2012 from Parroquia de San Esteban, a Catholic church located immediately west across White St., for allegedly generating the scandalous trash appearing on the church’s property, including beer bottles, condoms, dirty needles, and obscene fliers. http://swamplot.com/citywide-wave-of-taco-colonization-will-continue-with-occupation-of-former-drake-nightclub-in-sawyer-heights/2015-12-29/

  13. Strudel Auto Lease located at 700 W 11th St has a for lease sign. It may have been up for some time however Google street view from January 2023 shows the Great Down Payments! sign that had been in that spot for several years. The lot looks mostly cleared out. HCAD not showing a change in ownership since 2005.

This restaurant is finally getting close to opening. The build out is almost complete and they have started hiring.

  19. This is being built currently off 11th street near Studewood. It is being built in an old ice house location with an existing liquor license from years back. The interesting twist to this story is that the Heights proper is dry. This was in the terms of annexation of the Heights into Houston way back when. Since I work in the Heights I will be frequenting this place quite frequently. If you haven't been to Berryhill on Montrose for Sunday Brunch, you should go. It is quite the social epicenter. It reminds of the old La Starda days of the late 90's.
  20. The Kipling School seems to be expanding again. The old warehouse-like retail building at 518 Shepherd was demolished about a week or so ago. The school's website suggests this addition is coming to the SE corner of Blossom/Shepherd:
  21. Can't find a forum thread for this, and because there isn't a subforum for Near Northside I'm going to put it in The Heights for now @editor This is well into construction and per the calendar provided by HISD, it should be completed sometime early next year. This is a large expansion project + renovation/reuse of the existing building on campus. Northside High School was part of the 2012 Bond Referendum. 22. Replat application for the land that used to have an auto shop on the NE corner of Yale and 5th St. E&I Investments bought the property in 2013. "yale St. Plaza at Fifth Street" is just the subdivision name for the replat. Sounds like retail, but developers use funny names for subdivisions. Hopefully this is the first step in finally redeveloping this lot. Can't see how it could sit vacant for much longer with 700+ multifamily units going in across the street.
  23. This would have to be underway in order to meet their completion date. http://www.tramontejohnson.com/7800-washington/
