I just found out that small park located in the front of the Texas Women's Hospital Campus is actually a city-cited park called Fannin-Greenbriar Triangle located at 7898 Fannin Street. I thought it was just a small green space area belonging to the hospital. Didn't think it was an official city park. Also looks like it's a protest spot, AKA First Amendment Expression. https://www.houstontx.gov/parks/pdfs/FreeSpeechArea/Fannin-Greenbriar Triangle.pdf These areas are open to users for exercise of First Amendment rights during park hours. Users must register with HPARD Permits Office in order to reserve the area in advance. Although not a requirement of the area's use, it is recommended that all users register to avoid conflicts.

Today I noticed a For Sale sign that said 1.58-Acres For Sale. The parcel is located across the street from 6017 Ardmore Street. The realty company listed is Integral Properties, Inc.

Happy Friday... I was stunned when I found this, but would you believe that there is an old section of the original alignment of Braes Bayou right in the middle of the Texas Medical Center, hiding in plain sight? I found it today while walking by MD Anderson and the University of Texas School of Nursing building. The UTSN building is at the SE corner of Bertner and Holcombe. Just east of this building is a small park, which contained the homestead of a family that saw the TMC growing all around it and decided to give their 1 acre of land to the TMC under the stipulation that it be left as a park. At the north end of this park, about 15 feet from Holcombe, is a 20 foot deep gully that extends the full length of the park, west to east. After calling my brother, Texas Freeway (http://www.texasfreeway.com) owner/webmaster and doing some research online, it appears that this little 20 foot deep gully is perhaps the only remaining section of the original Braes Bayou, PRE Army Corp of Engineers re-alignment, dredging, concreting that took place in the 50's. See, the original Braes Bayou winded incessantly across Houston in a path that had to have taken water 2-3 times longer to pass through Houston's, so the ACoE decided to straighten the bayou's to provide more direct water drainage, and foliage elimination to provide less resistance. This little section of the bayou is visible in GoogleEarth historical imagery as well as TOPO maps on www.historicaerials.com going back to 1915 that show the winding alignment in this direct spot, adjacent to present day Holcombe Blvd. It would post some snap-shops in HistoricAerials or GoogleEarth to show this comparison, but I am short on time right now - perhaps another faithful HAIF poster can put some up? We didn't have a thread for this TMC campus. There is one, oddly shaped, parcel left for development. The parcel is vacant and is next to Highway 288. There is also the TMC surface lot (LAV Lot) that will be developed within time as space runs out. Tenants/Buildings of the Leland Anderson Campus includes: Texas Hearing Institute At 3100 Shenandoah St. Texas Medical Center Surface Parking Lot (LAV Lot) with an (incorrect) address of 3002 S. MacGregor Way The Rise School At 5618 H. Mark Crosswell, Jr. St. UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center At 2800 S. MacGregor Way UTHealth John Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center At 5615 H. Mark Crosswell Jr. St. YMCA Texas Medical Center At 5614 H. Mark Crosswell Jr. St. The campus was formally home to: METRO pickup/drop off surface lot At 5615 H. Mark Crosswell Jr. St. Michael E. Dear Students, Colleagues and Friends, This is a defining moment in the history of UTHealth. At 10 a.m. this morning, the John P. McGovern Foundation announced a transformational $75 million gift to our Medical School and McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics. Through 14 separate endowments, this gift will help us bolster medical training, will provide full scholarships to outstanding students and will support scientific discovery and innovation. The gift will also enhance programs at the McGovern Center, which was established in 2004 with another generous donation from the McGovern Foundation. Dr. McGovern embraced the philosophy of Sir William Osler, M.D., whose approach included patient-centered, compassionate care and appreciation of medical history and the humanities. The center serves all six of the university’s schools. In honor of the largest gift in our history, and the principles modeled by this great physician and his wife, UTHealth Medical School will be renamed theJohn P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School. The formal short name will be the McGovern Medical School.

There is a lot of land for sale near Medistar's apartment project on Admore & Alice. The billboard's have been there for a few years. They list Ned Torian with Torian Commercial Properties. Probably apart of Medistar's development? Believe the vacant industrial building is owned by Schlumberger on Grand Blvd?

This post office isn't well known, or spoken about much. Post offices in Upper Kirby and The Heights are often discussed. This is the United States Post Office Medical Center Station located 7205 Almeda Road. After researching the building for more information, it seems that the building is sitting empty. In August 2023, the post office had closed temporarily. Not sure if it's even open today? Could see a redevelopment here if the post office remains closed. Stopped by today to take a photo of the building.

Today I discovered a whole new building! Hidden away behind the Cullen Building, is the Jesse H. Jones Building. I believe within the building there is a space called Anderson Hall. Presumably named after Monroe Dunaway Anderson. All the old oil wildcatters definitely donated a lot to our Texas Medical Center. Lots of buildings are named after The Cullens, The Fondrens, The Alkeks, The Jones', etc. One strange thing I noticed is John H. Kirby didn't donate much to the TMC. I don't think there are buildings named after him. The Kirby family must not have been into philanthropy. His career was lumber and eventually petroleum, so maybe not a wildcatter like the rest of them. Edit: Here's the photo I took today:

A little confusing. Didn't Houston Methodist demolish a hospital called West Pavilion? Although, I believe that was the nickname and the proper name was medical related? Maybe the old West Pavilion was demolished for a direct replacement? I'll have to find the Historic Houston thread on the (now demolished) hospital for better clarification. I wanted to research more about this so today I sopped by the Houston Methodist West Pavilion located at 6447 Main Street. Here are the photos I took.

MD Anderson has office space in the GreenPark One Medical Office Building located at 7515 Main Street. I thought recently there was a change of ownership in the GreenPark buildings? I remember a few months ago there was building signage being removed. I stopped by today to snap a quick photo. It's actually not a bad looking MOB. Has that "tower" look. Gensler designed this?

It looks like Baylor College of Medicine has two buildings named after Albert & Margaret Alkek. This tower is located at 6450 East Cullen Street and appears relatively new. Built in the past 20 years? The design is really good and stands out among the rest. I would even like this tower to be somewhere more prominent so more people could see it. If this was a long the "Fannin Strip". Here''s a photo of the building I took today:

I just discovered that there really is 3 different buildings. On surface level, you see 3 different names beneath the same building. I always thought each family contributed to the building. Edit: Still doesn't explain the Alkek Tower? While looking on satellite to see each building, sure enough they are separate. TMC is dense! The Houston Methodist Brown Building is the one with the helipad on the roof. Street level photo I took last weekend.
