  1. I can't believe we don't have a thread for this! (or do we?) Here are a few photos I took yesterday. http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/gallery/1237377429/gallery_3613_2_91212.jpg http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/gallery/1237377429/gallery_3613_2_195305.jpg
  2. MD Anderson South Campus is located within the UT Research Park Complex. M.D. Anderson, Health Science Center break ground on research facility Houston Business Journal - 1:46 PM CDT Tuesday, April 10, 2007 The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are collaborating on a new imaging research facility. The organizations broke ground Tuesday at The University of Texas Research Park on what will become the Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging Research, dedicated to developing technologies that will detect heart disease, cancer and other illnesses at their earliest stages. The facility, scheduled for completion in late 2009, is being built in cooperation with GE Healthcare and the Texas Enterprise Fund. Link to article. Wow, not only am I getting a 1.1-million-square-foot teaching hospital within walking distance of my condo and a connection to N. Macgregor via Cambridge, but I'm also getting a 315,000-square-foot facility just down the street! I was hoping for more verticality, but I can live with it.
  3. Parkwood is at OST and Cambridge, just west of the VA Hospital. I understand that it's owned by Baylor, and is a large brick garden apartment complex with over 100 live oaks on the property, hardwoods, good square footage, and very reasonable rents (try $690 for 1233 sq. ft. 2 BR + den apt.) Most of the residents work in the Med Center, obviously. Many of them are post-docs and researchers, lots of Asian families. Lots of the families planted gardens there. Residents were given notice on September 1 to vacate by November 1. It's going to be demolished. Anybody know the history of this place? I think it was built around 1948. Who designed it? What's going up instead? I assume all the live oaks are history, they are already cutting them down on the VA's eastern border. If you want any free landscaping (crepe myrtles, wisteria, rubber trees, etc. ), now's the time to dig 'em up. Any good suggestions for apartment alternatives in the area?
  4. The one along Holly Hall crosses freight tracks owned by UP or Houston Belt & Terminal, but the frequency of trains is very low and almost never during the daytime. At night, small trains drop off and pick up cars at the Grocers Supply Co. distribution center on Holcombe, which is where the line currently ends, but that is the only user of the tracks of which I'm aware. Also known as Levitt Green.
  5. MD Anderson to demolish MacKie & Kamrath dental school. MD Anderson Cancer Center has informed Texas Historical Commission of its plans to demolish the former University of Texas Dental Branch, 6516 MD Anderson Boulevard in the Texas Medical Center. MacKie & Kamrath were the architects for the original five-story building, completed in 1955, as well as later additions constructed through the 1980s. Neither Houston’s historic preservation ordinance nor the Texas Antiquities Code apply to the property because the building is not located in a historic district and is not a designated landmark. Preservation Houston is encouraging MD Anderson to document the building before it is demolished. The historic building has been vacant since the UT Dental Branch (now UT School of Dentistry) opened its new facility at 7500 Cambridge earlier this year. The dental school was founded as the Texas Dental College in 1905 and became part of the UT System in 1943.

  7. Shriners Hospital for Children in Texas Medical Center is closing and parents are shocked https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/shriners-hospital-for-children-in-texas-medical-center-is-closing-and-parents-are-shocked/285-275e9430-e2e7-4939-aac0-5627a7566fac HOUSTON — A big change is coming to the Texas Medical Center, the Shriners Hospital for Children will be closing that location and consolidating with the Galveston branch in 2021. Mel Bower, Director of Marketing for Shriners, confirms the Houston Shriners hospital will consolidate with the Shriner’s hospital in Galveston. Bowers says they are consolidating to make services more efficient for patients, who he says shuttle back and forth between the hospitals. Bowers says one reason the Galveston location was chosen is, “The presence of the burns center in Galveston was an important consideration.” Shriners says they hope to bring as many of their current team as possible and that all services offered in the Med Center location will be offered in Galveston. "We will continue to offer all of our existing services, the benefit is that now they will all exist under one roof,” Bowers said. As for what will become of the building that one the Houston Shriners moves out, Bowers says they just don’t know yet.
  8. While randomly driving in the Texas Medical Center I noticed the building signage Jesse H. Jones Pavilion so I had to stop by and investigate. I never knew about this place. The Blood Center also has their Main Building on site. Photos I took today:
  9. The Holiday Inn Hotel NRG Area-Med Center located at 8111 Kirby Drive had a weird conference room or chapel on the side of the hotel. Just a small building attached. Maybe an event space. Photos I took today:
  10. Today I drove past the Extended Stay America Medical Center/NRG Hotel located at 1303 La Concha Lane. Some photos I took:
  11. Methodist has built a child care center on the western extent of this plot in the last couple of years. Not sure it's legit enough for a "going up!" post just yet but there have also been some recent permits for Methodist that appear to be related to an office building + garage. Currently most of the land is occupied by Hunt construction and temporary buildings (presumably related to other construction in the area) PROJECT_NO PERMIT_DESC OWNER_OCCUPANT Address PROJECT_DESC CURRENT_VALUATION PERMIT_TYPE 18049409 Expedited Com *HOUSTON METHODIST HOSPITAL 7550 GREENBRIAR DR 77030 (EPR) SITEWORK & FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE OFFICE BUILDING '12 IBC 0 EC 18049409 Plan Review Fee *HOUSTON METHODIST HOSPITAL 7550 GREENBRIAR DR 77030 (EPR) SITEWORK & FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE OFFICE BUILDING '12 IBC 0 PX 18049409 Express Review *HOUSTON METHODIST HOSPITAL 7550 GREENBRIAR DR 77030 (EPR) SITEWORK & FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE OFFICE BUILDING '12 IBC 0 SX 18049483 Plan Review Fee *HOUSTON METHODIST HOSPITAL 7550 GREENBRIAR DR GARAG 77030 (EPR) FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE GARAGE '12 IBC 0 PX
  12. Finally made the trek way down to Stadium Drive. While driving I noticed the Texas Children's Hospital Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics and Autism located at 8080 Stadium Drive. Photos I took today:
  13. 7301 Fannin is for sale! Perfect time for MD Anderson to gobble up more property! They need this adjoining land so they can build big. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/7301-Fannin-St-Houston-TX/21781467/
  14. The Center Pavilion Hospital located at 1700 Holcombe Blvd. Here is the other side of that postcard picture. It was the Park Towers Apartments at one time. Here is the front and back of a Park Towers Apartments postcard.
  15. The other week I stopped by the UTHealth Houston Recreation Center located at 1832 West Road. Photos I took: The J.J. Watt Cardio and Weight Training Center.
  16. There's a new construction site on the 3200 block of Moursund. Does anyone know any information on what is being built? It's next to the Dental School and across from Baylor College of Medicine's "new" Alkek building (2007).
  17. From what I understand, the St. Anthony Center was a retirement center for Priests. Found some information this week. I thought the Sacred Heart College campus was before the St. Anthony Center. According to this map, it was located on the next block over.
  18. 9-Story hotel going propsed at the corner of Lehall Street & Bertner Ave in the Texas Medical Center. There's a rendering on the current Planning Commission Agenda.
  19. Thanks for posting that great pic Subdude! I remember I had posted it in the old forum but had since forgotten what website it came from. I believe the Tidelands and Tides II were torn down during the late 90's to be replaced with surface parking lots for the Med Center I always liked those old buildings.
