  4. Stealing from Urbanizer's post last month here: https://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/51555-4701-westheimer-rd-potential-mixed-use-development/ https://www.broadviewcapital.com/projects There is also plans for new construction in Sugar Land. It's a weird little triangle piece of land wedged between Best Buy and the Southwest Freeway - just south of First Colony Blvd.
  5. 370 units. "The project calls for 370 one- or two-bedroom units in a development would feature a parking garage and five live-work units."
  6. I was looking at a 1955 map of Sugar Land when I noticed an oval race track. The oval track is near Alkire Lake, Eldridge Lake, and the Houston Fishing Club Lake. Edit: This could also be considered Stafford, Texas. While searching for a name of the race track, Sugar Land's official government website indicates the race track belonged to one of the cofounders of Sugar Land, Benjamin Franklin Terry. According to Wikipedia, Benjamin Terry lived from February 18, 1821 to December 17, 1861. Looking for traces of the race track, I found it on both Google Earth Desktop and HA. HA had aerial photos of the race track in 1953. I don't think the race track would still be visible and still in the oval shape some 92 years after Benjamin Terry had died. The race track would be covered up with grass and trees over the past 90 years. Unless if someone, or some group, kept the race track alive for 92 years after Benjamin Terry's death. The City of Sugarland's history page says this: The Terry/Kyle plantation, particularly Terry’s opulent home, became the area’s social center. The house included a ballroom and was close to a horse track. Terry’s home and race track were located near today’s Sugar Mill Elementary School; 13707 Jess Pirtle Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77498. The track was located at the intersection of South Kirkwood Road and Wright Road; just off South Main Street (Highway 90). You can map it yourselves by going to Walong Marketing, Inc. at 12950 S Kirkwood Rd, Stafford, TX 77477.

  8. I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business listing for Palms Theatre. Palms Theatre - Sugar Land, Texas 10 Min. Out On S-W Frway. I never even heard of this theater. I don't see anything on the famous cinematreasures.org archive website either. Was this possibly rebranded? Is there an exact address for this place? Looks like it's somewhere off 59 South/Southwest Freeway. Very cool find! Anyone ever been here?

  10. In early 2018, construction at the site of Fort Bend ISD’s new James Reese Career and Technical Center unearthed a forgotten piece of Sugar Land’s past: a historic cemetery where 95 individuals were buried, believed to be a part of a convict-leasing program that began in the late 1800s. https://www.fortbendisd.com/sugarland95
  11. Noticed this completed development on Medistar's website. https://medistarcorp.com/completed/ Completed in 2010, Medistar developed St. Luke's Sugar Land Hospital and Medical Plaza as a five-story, 220,000 square foot hospital. The hospital is complemented by a five-story, 125,000 square foot medical office building featuring a linear accelerator to support MD Anderson Cancer Center, a major tenant in the MOB.

Groundbreakings will take place between now and summer 2014 on the projects. “Fort Bend continues to grow in size and population and our patients are seeking an ever broader range of sophisticated medical and surgical treatments close to home,” said Dr. Marc L. Boom, Houston Methodist CEO. The expansion kicks off in November with groundbreaking on a 9,600-square-foot emergency care center on SH 6 in Missouri City between the Sienna Plantation and Riverstone communities. The facility is scheduled to open in summer 2014 and will house 10 treatment rooms and the latest technology in diagnostic imaging equipment. A new patient tower will be added between the Sweetwater Pavilion and Main Pavilion on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus, adding 104 beds. The tower will add intensive care beds and medical-surgical beds with space remaining for future expansion. Groundbreaking will take place in the summer of 2014 with completion in 2016. The hospital is also building a facility for Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. The practice will move to a new 60,000-square-foot building on the corner of U.S. 59 and Sweetwater Boulevard.
  15. Per Bisnow, this memorial was recently dedicated in Memorial Park in Sugar Land. Haven't heard of using tilt-wall for this sort of construction before. More on the design and planning can be found here.
  16. By that line of reasoning, the Woodlands is a south Houston wanna-be since Southern Star Amphitheatre was already an up and running outdoor concert venue when the Pavilion was built in the Woodlands. Or more realistically, the Woodlands is a long-ass drive from Sugar Land and the residents that live there have the money and inclination to tax themselves to get a venue a lot closer to them. The venue is going to be 6.500 seats which is about 1/3 the size of the Woodlands Pavilion - so it should cater to different acts and be more of a complement than a competitor. The corner of University and 59S is going to be interesting in the next few years. Every couple of years UH adds another building to their campus there, this is now going in there and I read somewhere that Fluor had secured a large chuck of land at that intersection (I want to say 50 acres but I might be wrong since I can't locate it right now) which sounds like they might be moving their campus from Highway 6 and 59S - I believe their lease there runs for about 5 more years.
  17. Found this listed in the Sept. 1959 issue: Idea Home Plan 2909-B In Sugar Land 123 Sorrento Built by: Leo E. O'Neal Decorated by: Foley's Talks of a hipped roof, shingled siding, a family "activity" center in the hub, enclosed garden next to the carport, has a one car garage , as well. Bedrooms are to one side of house, in a row. Has a fireplace you can walk around, on both sides. Has a narrow patio that extends around three sides of the main living area. Says the plan is an "unusual shape". It's 1712 sq. ft. Tried to look at this on GoogleEarth, can't tell much. Looks like the backyard is on a waterway. Wouldn't say it's one that really fascinates me, but it does have an interesting history.
  18. I moved to Sugar Land when it was Sugarland, but way after segregation. I was told that the old part of town with numbered streets were the white houses and the part of town with lettered streets were for black residents. With this in mind I recall the old M.R. Wood School on Avenue F, which I thought had a very nice design. It apparently has now either been torn down or rebuild beyond recognition. I realize that it probably needed to be enlarged, but I'm sad that another of our old buildings have been lost. Question #1: Where is the former "Sugar Land High School"? From 1950 to 1953, Ken Hall rushed for 11,232 yards for Sugar Land High School. Where is that school today? Question#2: Are there any older existing schools in the area? It seems they all have been torn down. I know both Sugar Land and Mo City each have an old auditorium, but I think that's about it. Of these 3 cities, Stafford is the oldest established town, yet, I have never seen an old school that serviced it. Question#3: Do either Mo City or Stafford have areas which were once segregated and where are they located? Question #4: Does anyone know the history of the large house facing South Main (90A) near Present Street? Question #5: Does anyone have a photo of the old M.R. Wood School they could post? Any information or memories you'd like to share would be awesome. Thanks.
  19. I've heard that Sugar Land schools are excellent, and I've heard good things about a lot of different subdivisions in Sugar Land. I'm hoping someone can help me narrow my search a bit by telling me: 1. What are the BEST elementary schools (and high schools, for future reference) in Sugar Land? 2. In terms of access to freeways, and mature trees, are First Colony and New Territory my best choices? Are there others that are close to freeways (and as close to Houston as possible) that also have mature trees? thanks for any advice/suggestions.
  20. Can any area long-time residents or Sugar Land area experts tell me about this specific area - the southern half of FM 1464? Subdivisions would be Orchard Lakes, Old Orchard, Chelsea Harbor, Shiloh Lake Estates, the subdivisions near Austin High and Garcia Middle, and now Aliana. These are all zoned to Austin High School (which I understand to be a good school). Then you've got Nick's Italian Restaurant, Texas Safari Ranch, Houstonian and Shadow Hawk golf courses, and not much else from what I can see. I've heard a developer bought the open farm land on the west side of the road across from the gas station, and was supposed to be developing a subdivision of single family homes with little lakes, similar to nearby developments. Not sure what's going on with that. What about the prisons in the area? I know the one in Sugar Land off Hwy 90 is supposed to be relocating so that the airport can expand, but what about the one on the west side of the Grand Pkwy in Richmond? What about New Territory and Telfair directly to the south; will the establishment of a new high school in Telfair cause a bunch of rezoning of the New Territory students out of Austin High? How do you see this impacting Austin High? I noticed Perry Homes has some very nice, large homes in Old Orchard... in Telfair the same exact home models are going for nearly $100k more! Seems extreme to me, as these areas are only a few minutes from each other. One concern I have is these subdivisions on FM 1464 are not in Sugar Land or Richmond city limits; in fact, though they have Sugar Land / Richmond postal addresses (depending on what side of the road they're on) they are all technically in Houston ETJ when looking at a map. How might this affect things - is it anything to be really concerned about? I would imagine Sugar Land or Richmond would want someplace like Aliana in their city limits to get the taxes, but as of now only Houston would be able to annex it unless there was an ETJ swap like what happened with Katy Mills Mall. How do you see this area 10-15 years from now? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking for the "creme of the creme" area so to say; just something family-friendly, with good schools, relatively affluent, convenient, and easy on the eye (meaning not a bunch of billboards and unattractive surroundings as in parts of Houston).
  21. They just received a $2mil grant for a "feasibility" study on future expansion on the airport for possible use as a support center in the avionics industry. While initially they are talking about buying out the prison and surrounding areas, I find it interesting that they are doing this just as SL residence are finally getting some "peace and quiet" from the new railroad improvements that were passed only just recently. Once this airport gets the nod (backed by Congressman ® Lampson), I'm sure things will move on relatively quickly. I imagine this will pretty much squash any hopes that pearland's hopes of expansion (as discussed here).
