  1. https://abc13.com/sugar-land-jobs-employment-in-medical-field-houston-area-mill/12786179/ "Nearly 20% of jobs in Sugar Land are in the medical field. The largest employer isn't a mill but a hospital, which has changed a lot in 15 years. https://www.fbherald.com/community/houston-methodist-sugar-land-hospital-celebrates-25-years-of-service/article_17c05a2e-7361-5332-bedd-169137809dc5.html "During an April 28 employee celebration to mark the hospital’s silver anniversary, Houston Methodist President and Chief Executive Officer Marc Boom, M.D., recalled the grand opening of Houston Methodist Sugar Land 25 years ago. “I remember turning and saying, ‘I think we are going to need a bigger hospital.’ It took us a little while, but look at where we are today,” he said. “You all are trailblazers because this was our very first site that we built outside the Texas Medical Center.”
  2. I was looking at a 1955 map of Sugar Land when I noticed an oval race track. The oval track is near Alkire Lake, Eldridge Lake, and the Houston Fishing Club Lake. Edit: This could also be considered Stafford, Texas. While searching for a name of the race track, Sugar Land's official government website indicates the race track belonged to one of the cofounders of Sugar Land, Benjamin Franklin Terry. According to Wikipedia, Benjamin Terry lived from February 18, 1821 to December 17, 1861. Looking for traces of the race track, I found it on both Google Earth Desktop and HA. HA had aerial photos of the race track in 1953. I don't think the race track would still be visible and still in the oval shape some 92 years after Benjamin Terry had died. The race track would be covered up with grass and trees over the past 90 years. Unless if someone, or some group, kept the race track alive for 92 years after Benjamin Terry's death. The City of Sugarland's history page says this: The Terry/Kyle plantation, particularly Terry’s opulent home, became the area’s social center. The house included a ballroom and was close to a horse track. Terry’s home and race track were located near today’s Sugar Mill Elementary School; 13707 Jess Pirtle Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77498. The track was located at the intersection of South Kirkwood Road and Wright Road; just off South Main Street (Highway 90). You can map it yourselves by going to Walong Marketing, Inc. at 12950 S Kirkwood Rd, Stafford, TX 77477.

  4. I noticed in the recent real estate transaction Dhanani Private Equity Group buys 50-acres from the Fluor Corporation there were parcels of land owned by the University of Texas System/Board of Regents. I wonder what could go here in the future? Maybe a small UTHealth Sugar Land Campus? Or they could sell the land to a developer to create a mixed-use development. I see Brookfield Properties owns the corner parcel. I would imagine the two would combine the parcels into one big plat.
  5. I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business listing for Palms Theatre. Palms Theatre - Sugar Land, Texas 10 Min. Out On S-W Frway. I never even heard of this theater. I don't see anything on the famous cinematreasures.org archive website either. Was this possibly rebranded? Is there an exact address for this place? Looks like it's somewhere off 59 South/Southwest Freeway. Very cool find! Anyone ever been here?
  6. This newly built strip center in the River Park neighborhood is at the corner of Grand Parkway and Imperia Dr. Wulfe & Co. is the owner. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/Grand-Parkway-Shopping-Ctr-Sugar-Land-TX/13890814/
  7. In early 2018, construction at the site of Fort Bend ISD’s new James Reese Career and Technical Center unearthed a forgotten piece of Sugar Land’s past: a historic cemetery where 95 individuals were buried, believed to be a part of a convict-leasing program that began in the late 1800s. https://www.fortbendisd.com/sugarland95
  8. Noticed this completed development on Medistar's website. https://medistarcorp.com/completed/ Completed in 2010, Medistar developed St. Luke's Sugar Land Hospital and Medical Plaza as a five-story, 220,000 square foot hospital. The hospital is complemented by a five-story, 125,000 square foot medical office building featuring a linear accelerator to support MD Anderson Cancer Center, a major tenant in the MOB.

  13. I hope and pray to the development gods that the SL district along HWY 6 doesn't follow the trend of strip malls aplenty beyond the county line. I take the Hwy 6 route into SL at least 3 times weekly and am hoping for a less generic solution to that areas growth problems. I am specifically talking about the location on the east side of Hwy 6 between the city line and Hwy 90. Anyone in the know regarding how that area is to be filled?
