  1. I was looking at a 1955 map of Sugar Land when I noticed an oval race track. The oval track is near Alkire Lake, Eldridge Lake, and the Houston Fishing Club Lake. Edit: This could also be considered Stafford, Texas. While searching for a name of the race track, Sugar Land's official government website indicates the race track belonged to one of the cofounders of Sugar Land, Benjamin Franklin Terry. According to Wikipedia, Benjamin Terry lived from February 18, 1821 to December 17, 1861. Looking for traces of the race track, I found it on both Google Earth Desktop and HA. HA had aerial photos of the race track in 1953. I don't think the race track would still be visible and still in the oval shape some 92 years after Benjamin Terry had died. The race track would be covered up with grass and trees over the past 90 years. Unless if someone, or some group, kept the race track alive for 92 years after Benjamin Terry's death. The City of Sugarland's history page says this: The Terry/Kyle plantation, particularly Terry’s opulent home, became the area’s social center. The house included a ballroom and was close to a horse track. Terry’s home and race track were located near today’s Sugar Mill Elementary School; 13707 Jess Pirtle Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77498. The track was located at the intersection of South Kirkwood Road and Wright Road; just off South Main Street (Highway 90). You can map it yourselves by going to Walong Marketing, Inc. at 12950 S Kirkwood Rd, Stafford, TX 77477.

  4. Hello to everyone. I am new to the group and have a facination w/Houston's history. I have recently begun a roster of Bldg's (180+) in the downtwon area {defined as Commerce (100 blk.} to the north, Dowling to the east, Mcilheny to the south & Houston ave. to the west} w/Main str. as the center divder down the middle. I suppose the first question I would like to get settled is just where does So. Main begin? Would it be @ the site where the old M&M Bldg. is? Or @ the corner of Main & Commerce? Or elsewhere? Anyway my interest has been spurned after viewing many photos recently @ the historical Houston page. I absolutly hate the new skyscrapers but will not let that influence any comments or input from others. Like many others I prefer the older {1940-1960} architecture. W/that said I have begun to trace sum history of several Bldg's. I will use the beautiful old Gulf Bldg. as an example. While puting my list of 180 Bldg's together and viewing photos I noticed that the same Bldg. had several different names. So far I have read that the Gulf Bldg. was originally the Texas Commerce Bank (TCB) & that 2day it is the JP Morgan Bldg. What I have not yet concluded was the Bldg. purpose built as a bank and over the intervening years new tenants occupied? Does anyone recall if indeed it was @ one time named the TCB or did they have a separate Bldg. elsewhere down town? One of my goals is to get to the Tax assessor's office and try to examine original tax records for a given parcel ID and along w/that to establish physical address' over the intervening years. That would be a hugh help as those records list the original and subsequent owners. I have also traced sum history for the original Bank of the S/W {now Bank One}, SP's Grand Central Sta. {the 5th depot to occupy that site} & now home to a huge Postal serv. facility, Houston Natural Gas which became the Enron Bldg. and the M&M Bldg. which had sum 600,000 square feet of floor space when it opened in the 30's ( considered a very large Bldg. @ that time) and is now occupied by UH. I would welcome all comments for everyone & will post additional findings in the future. I would also share my list w/anyonw who wishes a copy. It is Excel formatted and a works in progress. Respectfully Danny Mac
  5. Huge project registered with TDLR. Glad to see this!
  6. Talk about magical and mystifying. This temple is unbelievably gorgeous. Each of the 33,000 pieces is carved out of marble and limestone and improted from India and Italy. It only took 22 months from conception to opening, which is hard to believe if you've seen it. 109 sculptors/artists worked on it. The detail in the carving is incredible. A true gem right here in Houston and apparently it's the only open temple like this in the US. It's called Shikharbaddha Mandir. http://www.swaminarayan.org/globalnetwork/...ica/houston.htm The pictures don't do it justice. You HAVE to see it.
  7. I moved to Sugar Land when it was Sugarland, but way after segregation. I was told that the old part of town with numbered streets were the white houses and the part of town with lettered streets were for black residents. With this in mind I recall the old M.R. Wood School on Avenue F, which I thought had a very nice design. It apparently has now either been torn down or rebuild beyond recognition. I realize that it probably needed to be enlarged, but I'm sad that another of our old buildings have been lost. Question #1: Where is the former "Sugar Land High School"? From 1950 to 1953, Ken Hall rushed for 11,232 yards for Sugar Land High School. Where is that school today? Question#2: Are there any older existing schools in the area? It seems they all have been torn down. I know both Sugar Land and Mo City each have an old auditorium, but I think that's about it. Of these 3 cities, Stafford is the oldest established town, yet, I have never seen an old school that serviced it. Question#3: Do either Mo City or Stafford have areas which were once segregated and where are they located? Question #4: Does anyone know the history of the large house facing South Main (90A) near Present Street? Question #5: Does anyone have a photo of the old M.R. Wood School they could post? Any information or memories you'd like to share would be awesome. Thanks.
  8. I just recently heard that the Stafford School District might be going downhill because of some new hires in prominent positions. Is there a way that can be done to bring this to light? From what I understand a new principle to a school there came in bringing in her own agenda and is basically bullying teachers to the point where they want to leave so she can bring in her select teachers in. It just infuriates me how I'm seeing a good school district has the potential of suffering greatly because of a hire who simply didn't go through the proper channels and the kids are going to pay for it.
