  1. This week I came across William Hogg's personal stables! A little confusing, was this instance of San Felipe actually Dallas Street? Or maybe West Dallas? Will Hogg developed the neighborhood Tall Timber in River Oaks, just outside of Memorial Park. I assume the Tall Tmber Stables was apart of the neighborhood development. Tall Timber Stables San Felipe Road / Phone Hadley 2951 Saddle Horses - Boarding Renting Exercising - Show & Pleasure Horses Schooled - 130 acres in the pines, adjacent to River Oaks and the 1500-acre Memorial Park and its miles of bridle paths.
  2. I haven't been to Chuy's in a while. My father and I used to come here on our weekly meetups. What does everyone think about the food here at Chuy's? I think the chips are a little too think and broken. I'm not a fan of their house salsa either, I don't like that salsa fresca. I prefer other types of salsa like a ranchero or habanero salsa. Malina's in Bellaire (or Southside Place) has a unique salsa. One of their house salsa has vinegar, or pickle juice added. It's a little tangy! Does anyone else think Chuy's needs a parking garage? Their surface lot is considerably small for the amount of business they bring. Since the pandemic, they also took some of the surface lot for to-go orders. Looking on Google Maps, there is a lot of space. However, it's kind of extravagant to build a garage for a restaurant. I believe, in due time, this parcel will be combined with the retail parcel to the left and sold for high-rise development. It's a lot of space in a high valued area, and single-story buildings will be phased out.
  3. There's that small retail center near Lamar High School that's located at 2802 Westheimer Road. In between River Oaks and Upper Kirby. Old Loopnet listing: https://www.loopnet.com/property/2802-westheimer-rd-houston-tx-77098/48201-0121150000018/ How is that fancy restaurant called Relish? It's been there forever but I never tried it. https://www.relishhouston.com/
  4. The building contains two businesses, Pink Berry frozen yogurt and Zoe's Kitchen. Zoes Kitchen is awesome. Love that yellow rice! Cool little retail center in the high profile river oaks. Regarding future, high-rise development, the purchaser would most likely include this parcel and the one next door, the Plants n' Petals flower shop. This stand a lone parcel is too small to work with. Edit:
  5. Has anyone ever shopped at the Plants n' Petals flower shop located at 3810 Westheimer Road? I always buy my flowers and plants from Central Market across the street. I wonder how they are different? Maybe buying from Plants n' Petals is supporting a local business whereas buying from CM is supporting a billion dollar corporation. Although, HEB/Central Market is a fantastic company to support! Love the unique grow houses/green houses.
  6. In the Texas State Journal of Medicine, Volume 44, Number 3, July 1948 there is a listing for a (now) demolished house in River Oaks. Greenwood, Mrs. James R., 3394 Chevy Chase (6). 2006 view, surrounded by trees!! 2014, new mansion took its place: I would call it a McMansion, but this home in RO is anything but cheap. Love that circular pool!
  7. Found a James Greenwood, Jr. curriculum vitae that lists his residence in River Oaks. I believe the home was demolished and a new mansion took its place. Tried searching on Google Earth but there's too many trees on the parcel to find the house. I never knew Jas. Greenwood, Jr. was included in all of the Texas Medical Center hospitals. He practically worked at every TMC hospital. Impressive resume! Although, I did notice the infamous Greenwood Sanitarium was not listed. I do know his father, James Greenwood, Sr. founded the sanitarium. I thought he worked at the sanitarium a long side his father? He was a doctor there. James Greenwood, Jr., M. 8. Proposed plat. Located where Backstreet Cafe and H-Town Restaurant Group is located. Traci Vaught and Hugo Ortega's first restaurant that started their restaurant empire.
  9. Noticed this matchbook recently and wondered about the business. Does anyone remember this store? I assume it was active in the 1960s. Looks to be where the current Robert's Carpet is, across the street from Shops at Arrive River Oaks. 10. https://www.houstonpress.com/media/pdf/nixon_meyerland-sept11.pdf contains the extensive brunch documentation have you ever found any photos of the demolished Blaffer home at 2 Briarwood?
  11. Cool looking house! I never even heard of the Sewell-Avery families. I wonder who those people are and what they did for a living? Must have been business owners or doctors/bankers to live in RO. Sewell-Avery House Address: 3456 Inwood Drive, River Oaks. Year Built: 1925. Architects: Cram and Ferguson and William Ward Watkin, associate architect.
  12. I've noticed gun clubs have a cool formation in aerial photography. Found a historic Uptown gun club so I thought I would share my findings. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated June 15, 1924: Views Snapped On Post Party Jaunt Along The Westheimer and Bellaire Roads. Upper Left: The gun club out on the Westheimer Road with a front view of the Jordan Blue Boy in the foreground. The Houston Post. dated June 8, 1924: An Airplane View of Houston Gun Club John Winters and Ed Bond recently took the accompanying picture of the Houston Gun Club's up-to-date house and trap field.
  13. Another John Staub mansion bites the dust: Astros owner Jim Crane buys $24M historic River Oaks home only to tear it down
  14. Thought I would create a thread on this 1962 condo high-rise in River Oaks. I searched and there was only a handful of mentions in random threads. Has anyone lived here? Is it a good place to live? Who was the original architect and builder?
  15. I was reading the newspaper Jewish Herald-Voice dated August 18, 1977 and came across a business advertisement for Harrigan's Restaurant located at 2702 Kirby Drive. Does anyone recall this place? 1977 was actually present resent. I assume someone on HAIF went here to eat. I've never heard about the restaurant until today! Great Things Happen at Harrigan's- Great Foods Great Service Great Evenings Harrigan's -The Funtasmagoria Place- 2702 Kirby Drive (½ Block South of Westheimer) Reservations 524-4611
  16. Not sure if this has a topic created already but I’ve seen this being built for a while now. Anyone have more info?
  17. A demolition permit was pulled yesterday. The property was sold in 2021 to Whitney Management.
  18. I was reading the newspaper The Houston Post. June 3, 1924 and came across an article detailing a new hospital called Autry Memorial Hospital School located at the intersection of Shepherd's Dam Road and West Dallas Avenue. Awesome, awesome find!! I never knew about this hospital! Apparently the hospital was another tuberculosis treatment center that paired with the Houston Anti-Tuberculosis League Hospital located at 806 Bagby Street. Here's the newspaper clipping and article: Child Hospital Is Given To City By Mrs. Autry $50,000 Institution to Stand as Memorial to James L. Autry Jr. Tubercular Boys and Girls Will Be Cared For in Effective Way. A hospital and school for tubercular children and those threatened with the diseases to cost $50,000, is to be built and given to the city at once by Mrs. Allie K. Autry. Announcement of the gift was made by Mayor Holcombe at the meeting of the city council Monday afternoon. Plans for the building were begun some months ago and have been completed and approved both by the council and by the advisory board representing Mrs. Autry. The hospital will occupy a site near the city present tubercular hospital, at the intersection of Shepherd’s Dam road and West Dallas avenue. It will be known as the “Autry Memorial School” in honor of the donor’s son, James Lockhart Autry Jr., who died in 1922.
  19. Saw this car advertisement for Joe Myer's Ford located at 4410 Westheimer Rd. Can we date this? 1960s? Kind of crazy to have a surface lot for car sales in the (present day) River Oaks. Joe Myers' Ford. . . . Family Headquaters For Your Transportation Requirements "We Sell To You Again" Joe Meyers' Ford Inc. 4410 Westheimer (3 Blocks East of Loop 610) New Cars NA 2-1550 Used Cars NA 2-1554
  20. I never knew about this small neighborhood park in River Oaks. I believe it was first named after the daughter of George Meyer, Rebecca Meyer. Now it is simply referred to as Meyer Park? Kind of confusing since the large shopping center near meyerland is called Meyer Park Shopping Center. Rebecca Meyer Park covers an area of 1.8 acres and offers 0.3 miles of footpath. Located a few blocks north of Westheimer in River Oaks. From a Sanborn map dated 1934 - Aug 1950, probably in 1948.
  21. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated January 5, 1972 and came across an advertisement for the Post Oak Family Center Y.M.C.A. located at 2320 Willowick Road.
