I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated May 25, 1950 and came across one of the famous Meyers residential address! Sadly, this doesn't look like a mansion. Located in the area of West University/Rice Village, it was a typical home. I believe Frank Meyer built his mansion a few decades later at 9111 South Post Oak Road. Tried to look for an old aerial view of the home but there's too many trees blocking it! I believe the original house is still there? Seniors Mark Time 'Til Graduation With Parties Parties for girl graduates-to-be continue as commencement day draws closer-- Mrs. Frank S. Meyer honored their daughters Gloria Meyer and Frances Berryman, with a tea Saturday afternoon at the Meyer home, 2336 Bolsover.

I was reading the newspaper The Thresher dated September 14, 1972 and came across a movie advertisement for Art Cinema located at 6140 Village Parkway. This was an adult theater. 6140 Village Parkway - 528-8186 - In University Village - 1/2 Block East of Kirby Dr. between Times & Amherst.

I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 9, 1948 and came across a business listing for Midget Market located on Kirby Dr. At Sunset Blvd. Did anyone do their grocery shopping here? I'd be interested in any knowledge, or stories. I love all the small, independent grocers. Now days there are 3 big brands that dominate and HEB is on every corner. Very cool building too! Anyone happen to know the architect?

I haven't had time to do any research but I noticed when I was at the 24 hour fitness last week that they had torn out the old garage between the new garage and the children's protective services building in the village. I guess they must be adding more space to their facility. Does anyone have any info on this new construction?

Does anyone have a good idea of what Rice Village used to be like before its current incarnation as a more upscale place with chains and quirky boutiques? The closest I've found is a long-standing bead shop that closed a few years back (along with the late Variety Fair, and a head shop called "The Rat Hole"). Was it more of a counter-cultural store collection, or more of just a ramshackle bunch of businesses that congregate around universities and aim for the college student demographic? Or both?

Just read that the Village institution Variety Fair will be closing down within the next 90 days...what a shame, what a great place of fond memories, just another addition to the dwindling number of Houston landmarks that come to a sad end.

The building on Greenbriar next to Christ the King church (used to be the Baylor Family Medicine Building) will be torn down - it is owned by JTVP Corp. which is a nonprofit subsidiary of Rice University. Does anyone know what is planned for this location?

I just arrived in Houston this weekend and have been searching for a new apartment for my husband and 9 month old. It's been a grueling process, but I think we've narrowed our search down to 2 complexes: The Village at West University (at 5151 Edloe near the 59) and The Amalfi at Hermann Park. I've read all the reviews of The Village on apartmentratings.com but for some reason can't find a single review of The Amalfi anywhere on the internet (they opened in May 2008 I believe). Does anyone have any experience or feedback regarding either of these 2 complexes? The Village seems to be in a prime location in terms of walking distance to Kroger, shops, and restaurants, but the crime (apartment and auto break-ins) that I've read about is worrying, especially since I have a 9 month old. Apparently TV Max is also a problem at The Village according to the reviews I have read. I fell in love with The Amalfi as soon as I saw it, but I find it kinda weird that I can't find a single review of the complex online. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...many thanks!

Just a quick research-y question (I'm trying to put together a small page on this building): can anyone confirm that the 2400 Bolsover building is Hood's Times Building? The rendering posted earlier looks like it, but it would have been altered quite a bit in the build-out... http://www.arch-ive.org/cellar/grn001.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/comm/times/hood_times.jpg

This place was on University Blvd. back in the mid 80s when I worked in the Medical Center. Believe it was close to Morningside - anyone remember the name of this place?

A girlfriend of mine is trying to find the name of a club from about 1970 where she saw 3 Dog Night on perhaps Kirby near the 59? It was upstairs and it seems she remembers blue lights on the stage that could be seen from outside. One person recalls something about the Vault and a bank building. Being from Pasadena (now in Calif.), she went to a club in Pasadena like that called the Vault. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
