  1. Noticed a Lewis Property Company leasing sign this weekend. Didn't that furniture company move here from down the street? It failed at this location too? Dang.

  4. Which building has the bell tower downtown? Is it the Esperson Building? Is it a real bell, or speakers? I love hearing this. You can really hear it well in the parking garages along Fannin. It's the best when the clock strikes 12.

  10. I was doing some research today and came across this quote in a New York Times article from the 80's: I think a lot of people in Houston don't realize the significance of these buildings.

  16. By Olivia Pulsinelli – Assistant managing editor, Houston Business Journal After Randalls announced the closure of its prominent Montrose storefront more than a year ago, a new tenant has been lined up. Minneapolis-based Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) confirmed to the Houston Chronicle that it leased approximately 63,000 square feet at 2075 Westheimer, the site of the former grocery store. More details, including the opening date, were not available. The Montrose Randalls, located in the Shepherd Square Shopping Center at the corner of Westheimer and Shepherd Drive, was one of three that the grocery store chain announced it would close in late 2018. Houston-based Wulfe & Co. built the Shepherd Square Shopping Center, one of its first inner-Loop projects, in 1989. Randalls signed a lease in the property, a 128,000-square-foot shopping center at 2075 Westheimer Road, and opened its fourth flagship store there. But the company's late founder, Ed Wulfe, told the Houston Business Journal in 2018 that the Randalls closure didn't come as a surprise. "They have been struggling as a supermarket for some time now and not producing sufficient sales," Wulfe said at the time. "This used to be one of their best stores in the city." Wulfe noted that the storefront would be a desirable piece of real estate for any number of uses — a liquor and wine store, a high-end furniture store, a fitness operation — and could be divided up to occupy several retailers. "You can’t find a 61,000-square-foot big box space that’s in the heart of the city," Wulfe said. In January, Randalls announced five other Houston-area closures, adding to the several closed in recent years. Some other former Randalls stores also have been given new life, including a Cypress store becoming a location of Star Furniture & Mattresses.

  20. There seems to be a lot of unoccupied retail space off Heights Blvd, specifically, the intersection of 6th street / Heights Blvd and the shopping center at the entrance to the Houston Heights off 4th street. I did see a new shop in the process of opening called McCain
  21. I haven't been to Chuy's in a while. My father and I used to come here on our weekly meetups. What does everyone think about the food here at Chuy's? I think the chips are a little too think and broken. I'm not a fan of their house salsa either, I don't like that salsa fresca. I prefer other types of salsa like a ranchero or habanero salsa. Malina's in Bellaire (or Southside Place) has a unique salsa. One of their house salsa has vinegar, or pickle juice added. It's a little tangy! Does anyone else think Chuy's needs a parking garage? Their surface lot is considerably small for the amount of business they bring. Since the pandemic, they also took some of the surface lot for to-go orders. Looking on Google Maps, there is a lot of space. However, it's kind of extravagant to build a garage for a restaurant. I believe, in due time, this parcel will be combined with the retail parcel to the left and sold for high-rise development. It's a lot of space in a high valued area, and single-story buildings will be phased out.

  23. Weslayan Plaza announcement: Goodbye Chuck E., hello Torchy http://www.instantnewsbellaire.com/weslayan-plaza-announcement-goodbye-chuck-e-hello-torchy/ Weslayan Plaza is going to lose a longtime family favorite, Chuck E. Cheese, but gain an outlet of the growing Torchy’s Taco chain, Instant News learned Monday (May 21). A spokeswoman for Regency Centers said Torchy’s is poised to open in the east section of the plaza in summer of 2019. There was no immediate word about whether Chuck E. Cheese will relocate in the Bellaire-West U-southwest Houston area, but InstantNews has contacted the chain’s corporate media relations department for a comment. UPDATE: A Chuck E. Cheese rep says the company will have no comment at this time, but Regency Centers has said the restaurant will close in September. Torchy’s began in Austin. Its menu of non-traditional taco combinations and sides for breakfast, lunch and dinner has expanded successfully into 11 Texas cities, with 14 locations in the Houston area alone, including one in Rice Village. The chain also has multiple locations in Oklahoma and Colorado. The new Torchy’s will be just a few doors down from the 30-year-old Weslayan Plaza family mainstay, Skeeter’s, which features tacos and other Tex-Mex and southwestern specialties but offers a broader menu.
