An archive link to this thread is coming. The 1500 block of N Shepherd is being converted into a new development. The map for Bungalows on 22nd St shows the entire 1500 block of North Shepherd as development called Market at Houston Heights. The properties are between W 16th St and W 15th St, across the street from Wooster's Annex and Heights Bier Garten. The site plan depicts three restaurants and a retail space.

Went to Shade for New Year's Eve dinner and noticed a Thai Spice sign on the corner of 19th and Nicholson across from Collina's. I have never eaten there, does anyone have an opinion?

The one along Holly Hall crosses freight tracks owned by UP or Houston Belt & Terminal, but the frequency of trains is very low and almost never during the daytime. At night, small trains drop off and pick up cars at the Grocers Supply Co. distribution center on Holcombe, which is where the line currently ends, but that is the only user of the tracks of which I'm aware.

Formerly Cowboys and Indians is now called Parley Bar and Grill. This will the third restaurant to open at this location. First it was Juanmon's Tortas which I tried once. They used a soft bread for the tortas but I like a French style baguette for my tortas. Then it became Cowboys Indian which I never tried. The new menu looks more upscale type food. As most teens did in the 80's, I spent a lot of time trolling the mall! I'm trying to remember all those shops we used to love to buy clothes at. Here are some that come to mind: Clothing: County Seat Jean's West Merry-Go-Round Dejaiz Chess King Foxmoor The Gap (when it was strictly jeans and t-shirts) Judy's Some other mall stores that are now defunct: Kinney's shoes Thom McAn Wicks n Sticks Morrow's Nut House Art Standing Hickory Farms Woolworth's Baker's Shoes The Wild Pair Anybody else out there have memories of great shops in the malls of the 70's and 80's? There are CBRE signs up at the Bethel Church at 1107 Shepherd, or the block bounded by Shepherd, Durham, Center and Nett. This might create difficulty for the restaurant formerly known as Floyd's, since they use the church parking lot for their customers. I was walking around Rice Village recently (pushing a stroller) and noted how poor some of the streets/curbs and infrastructure appeared. There are numerous areas where the curbs have no ramps and you are literally forced to walk in the street or through parking lots. This is really surprising to me given the number of young families with children in the immediate area, and the proximity to the medical center (and thus likely use by people in wheelchairs.) The village is really one of the major 'public faces' of Houston to the outside world, likely to be visited by out of town families of Rice university students, and out of town medical center patients and families (I see the shuttle buses from the medical center hotels dropping them off frequently.) As such, I really can't understand the lack of investment in the roads and curbs in the village area and I'm really surprised someone hasn't brought an ADA lawsuit. Are sidewalks and curbs in commercial areas the responsibility of the city or the property owner to maintain?

Just noticed last night that Chippendale Eastlake Antiques on the corner of 19th and Rutland is gone - space has been cleared out and there is a for lease sign on the front of the building. Anyone know what happened to them? Gone out of business, moved elsewhere, untenable rent increase, or something else? They seemed like a fixture in that spot, and had been there as long as I've been living in the area. I don't think Braun will have much trouble leasing the space, as something that size in the center of activity on 19th doesn't become available very often.

I am now living in Los Angeles, but on a recent trip to Houston, I saw the difference in retail outlets in the Galleria and even Highland Village. Both places have gotten pretty big chains and specialty stores, like Burberry, Dior, Bose, Jimmy Choo, and Luca Luca. Although most people don't care for this, since it is outside of most people's reach, I work in this industry, doing marketing for luxury brands, and I know that stores moving into a city at this pace signifies growth and confidence that the city is chic enough and diversified enough to open shop. In Houston, there have been 13 store openeings of a high caliber, those found in Rodeo Dr or 5th Ave. 10 years ago, that would have been impossible, I think that Houston is on the ap like never before. But those are just my thoughts. Though it is not the architecture phenomenon we all wish for, at least people visiting---for pleasure or business---will see the Gucci store or the Sony Style store and not feel that they are in a country town with big freeways. Not to up-play it, but this type of thing makes a difference when producers look for a city to host a show in, like the REAL WORLD or and awards show. It puts us on the cultural map.
