  1. This makes the second building a long South Main Street (Main Boulevard?) that I never knew about. February 12, 1916. The Owl Supply Co. Kiibler, Proprietor Autury House is located at 6265 South Main Street, and this was right next door. Up close! Amazing photograph, for being in the late 1910s out a long South Main Street. This was all rural land, just all fields. Is Honey Boy Ice Cream still around?
  2. I was told this building will be demolished but didn't have a timeline as to when. HCAD shows it being 2902 Tuam St.
  3. There's an existing topic for this property that predates this one by a month. Moderators, please consider merging this with the topic for High Fashion Home - 3100 Travis St. It's the same property. @Urbannizer @Triton https://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/2722-high-fashion-home-at-3100-travis-st
  4. Noticed this matchbook recently and wondered about the business. Does anyone remember this store? I assume it was active in the 1960s. 6. Very, very cool piece of history here! This was the original Foley store, and then they moved to 214-218 Travis Street. The building was built in the early 1900s, I believe 1909! Not to be confused with the Foley's Department Stores. This business was made by brothers Pat and James Foley, who ran a dry goods business referred to as W.L. Foley Dry Goods Co.
  7. Found a very cool Joseph Finger building from the 1950s! Phoenix Furniture Store on the corner of Texas Ave. & Travis St. From the newspaper Labor Messenger dated November 26, 1943. Compliments Phoenix Furniture Store New Location - Texas at Travis
  8. This is amazing! Otto Taub was Ben Taub's father. I knew he had a cigar store, but I could never find the address attached. Found in the newspaper The Houston Post. dated November 6, 1904. Otto Taub's Cigar Store Horace R. Kelly Co.'s Corona Clear Havana Cigar Now 5 Cents $2.25 for fifty 1007 Congress Avenue
  9. I have always heard William Marsh Rice owned and operated a dry goods stand. I believe I found it! Talk about a needle in a haystack. This is cool history! From the newspaper Houston Tri-Weekly Telegraph dated November 10, 1865: Bargains! Bargains Immense Stock Just Received Per Steamer Wilmington, by E.R. 10. I've been researching this shopping center/retail center for a while. Thought I would create a dedicated thread for more exposure. Who was the developer? Who was the architect? Does anyone remember this shopping area on the corner of Holcolmbe & South Main? I bet someone on HAIF used to shop here. Would love to see some photos! This would have been active in the 1960s and was closed in the early 1970s. From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 7, 1968: Sound Equipment 3118 Smith (Smith at Elgin) JA 6-3651 3727 Westheimer (E. of Highland Village) MI 4-7371 7227 Fondren (Next to H.M.T.) 771-5819 (Frontenac Plaza) 6800 S. Main A 6-0436 (Howard at Gulf Frwy.) 8404 Winkler MI 4-7371 (Spring Branch) 8343 Long Point HO 8-8646
  11. When the news broke about a proposed NRG Park Mixed-Use Development, reporters took note the given area surrounding NRG Park. The reporters noticed the immediate area is littered with the standard, one-story basic retail strip centers. How could we improve the general retail in the southern Main Street corridor? I have noticed the independent owned restaurants can't survive so the national corporations come in to replace. The former Shell Technology Center located at 1500 Old Spanish Trail could become a vibrant, class-a retail district. Maybe that could be the starting point? I believe the TMC took control of the land from New Quest? So probably not. Given the area around the world-class Texas Medical Center, it would be a good idea to build better retail and restaurants. Thought I would create a thread about the retail market surround the TMC and NRG Park areas.
  12. Braun is renovating this office building. PDG Heights has their construction trailer in the parking lot while they build PDG Heights. https://braunenterprises.com/media/7/6/7/c/4/9/west-heights-urban-office-flyer.pdf https://braunenterprises.com/property/west-heights/ 1st Floor. 2nd Floor. 15. I don't know if there is a name for the building at 416 Main St. It's in the Central Business District in downtown Houston. According to Houston Time Portal, the building was home to a bar and billiard parlor named The Cabinet. Moritz Weil Cigars was located there too. The building was also home to Gordon Jewelry Co, according to Arch-ive.org. The lot at 416 Main St is situated between the Byrd Building (420 Main St) / Byrd's Lofts (919 Prairie St) and the State National Bank Building (412 Main St). January 2022 Google Earth image
  16. Haven’t seen a Chinatown thread, so I’ll post here. Bellaire Food Street will expand too. Dun Huang Plaza and Bellaire Food St are my favorite plazas in Chinatown so good to see both expand. They’re also within walking distance of eachother. Culture map has an article on this https://houston.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/01-26-22-bellaire-food-street-phase-two-chinatown-restaurant-shopping-center/ i first noticed while driving.
  17. In 1928, Joseph Finger planned a four-story building for the Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. Jesse H. Jones later commissioned Alfred C. Finn to add five-floors of office space above the Levy Bros. store. At the same time, Alfred C. Finn removed most of Joseph Finger’s proposed Art Deco ornamentation. In 1939, Jesse H. Jones commissioned Alfred C. Finn to increase the building’s height to 22-stories. At this time, the company was nicknamed Levy's for short. Note* I had help from the following website: http://www.houstondeco.org/1920s/levys.html
  18. A little confusing, but I believe this Joseph Finger building did not get built. Jesse H. Jones hired Alfred C. Finn to increase the height and change a few things. The original design by Finger was not selected.
  19. wow!! I discovered a new (to me) department store in Houston! I searched around HAIF and there was only 2 or 3 mentions over the past 15 years. Figured I would create an official thread so people can gain more knowledge about the company. In terms of the company name, and searching around the internet, the name was spelled many ways. Levy Brothers Department Store Levy Bros. Department Store Levy Brothers Dry Goods Company Levy Brothers Dry Goods Co. Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. Levy Brothers Company Looks like the official wording, per company letterhead and invoices, was Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. From an invoice dated December 12, 1952: Several online Houston history blogs indicate the address was 309 Main Street. The 1907 Sanborn Houston map had the company surrounding the addresses 309, 311, and 313 Main Street. I searched through old newspapers for both 309 and 313 Main Street and did not find any information containing Levy Bros. When searching for 311 Main, I got results. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated March 8, 1914: Department Stores Dexter, Fred F. 230 W. Seventeenth Ave., H. Hts. Taylor 205 Levy Bros., 311 Main. Preston 36 Munn Co., W.C., Travis St. Capitol Ave. and Main St. Preston 218; A1131. The Houston Post. dated June 24, 1914: J.B. Westover, Adv. Mgr. Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. Dry Goods and Women's Furnish'gs 311 Main St. Phone P675 From a 1907 Sanborn Houston map: A photo of the Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. building at 311 Main Street.
  20. Learned something new today! Joseph Finger designed a Battelstein's Department Store in Montrose located at 2010 South Shepherd Drive. Very cool!! I wasn't aware of this store. From the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 6, 1964: Now Available at Battelstein's The Amazing New Finnish Sauna Portable Sauna Bath Have a Beauty SPA in your own home for pennies a day! It cleanses the body, relaxes tension, offers much pleasure and well being. Battelstein's 2010 South Shepherd Interior photo I found online: Interior of Battlestein’s Department Store, 2010 South Shepherd, ca. 1950. This suburban Battlestein’s was designed by Joseph Finger who also designed earlier downtown incarnations of Battlestein’s. The store’s interior was reminiscent of Foley’s Department Store, which opened in 1947.
  21. Alfred C. Finn designed this proposed "Name Here Department Store" in the 1920s. Alfred Finn’s office prepared this rendering in the 1920s for a massive, but ornately designed, department store. The tile work along the eaves suggests that this store would have been another addition to the many Mediterranean style buildings that were constructed in Houston during this time period. Had several proposed Mediterranean-style buildings actually been completed during the 1920s, it would have helped to produce a more uniform architectural style throughout the city.
